I think one thing that made Jerry great was, while soloing he could maintain an ongoing melodic sensibility while simultaneously stepping back and leaving space for the sound of everybody else to thunder through. He'd actually listen, with an artist's ear, to whatever sounds the band produced, then play his next phrase in response to what he had heard. (Not necessarily in terms of specific note choices but more in terms of friendly acknowledgement)

He had so many people scrutinizing every aspect of his performance, every time to make sure that it was right on the note at every point, there was no room for improvisation at all and I can only imagine that that would just feel like a cage and it's sad to think about that as magnificent of a voice that Pavarotti had that he was limited by his critics and colleagues as to what he could do. +MarcBrewer Yes, I think so; I've read a Garcia interview in which he said that, in a certain public performance, he had not his giuitar whit him so he had to choose to use Costello's guitar or Richard Burton's one; he first picked that one of mr. Costello, he didnt like it, he put it down, then he took Burton's instrument and he find the the stirings were as thin as "spider web" (garcia words!) so he took again Costello guitar and played with that; at last he said somethin like "I'll never go to a jam without carrin' my own guitar".

Thanks for the cool info!!! Very interesting since I wondered about the guitar. So used to his normal axes.

Good catch, and I'm told that Liz Taylor was nowhere near the place.

+Kurt Diamond: How could you even think that that guy is James Burton? He's DECADES too young. He's James Burton's son, Jeff! (Read comments!)

So I opted to play Elvis' guitar as the lesser of two evils. [*laughter*] And I vowed I would never go to another one of those shows without my own. Elvis: It was a whole Three Stooges routine -- "Here, you take my guitar," "No, I'll take your guitar." I think I had Burton's old Telecaster for half a song, and James had my old Martin acoustic which wasn't cranked up so he couldn't solo--and Jerry's struggling with my guitar.
