Jerry on a borrowed guitar still has that Jerry sound without all the pedals and effects. So many imitate him, but there was only one Jerry.

As a "Deadhead", Jerry's tune was clipped picking, IMO. I followed the Dead for many years. Been to the New Years Bash in Oakland several years. Watched Mr Nash come out on a Float full of roses... Wandered/Floated around the rotunda many times! ;-)...Those were a few things I can remember...

the fact that in 89 both Jerry and Sammy were filling stadiums and arenas with the Dead and Van Halen but still played a 120-seat club jam with passion and joy tells you EVERYTHING about both of them. They were/are just musicians through and through, not fame chasers

I think one thing that made Jerry great was, while soloing he could maintain an ongoing melodic sensibility while simultaneously stepping back and leaving space for the sound of everybody else to thunder through. He'd actually listen, with an artist's ear, to whatever sounds the band produced, then play his next phrase in response to what he had heard. (Not necessarily in terms of specific note choices but more in terms of friendly acknowledgement)

Pete told me back in the mid to late nineties that he had some of Jerry's road cases... They were in his garage and I don't remember if he had left the garage door open or if it was a forced entry, but somebody had stolen them. You could hear the disappointment. They meant a lot to him in kind of a tangible connection way.

Continued:So last year on the twenty-first anniversary, I did a show with Nick Lowe, and he invited James Burton and Jerry Scheff, who'd played with me on the road. I did my little set, Nick did his set and then it was a free-for-all; Charles Brown did a piece, and people were getting summoned to the stage. I was standing in the corridor when I suddenly heard, "Jerry Garcia to the stage!" And, emboldened by several margaritas, I decided to join him.

"When I started playing electric guitar the second time, with the Warlocks, it was a Freddie King album that I got almost all my ideas off of, his phrasing really. That first one, Here's Freddie King, later it came out as Freddie King Plays Surfin' Music or something like that, it has 'San-Ho-Zay' on it and 'Sensation" and all those instrumentals" - Jerry Garcia

I wasn`t really concerned with Jerry Garcia all over the decades. IMHO he makes a great job with his solo guitar playing here. Sammy Hagar singing a blues song is a rarity, And he plays the minor role here. The female singer is a perfect addition to him. Probably they had a few drinks later, but with that breeches and braces on he wouldn`t make a point. ;-)) No offence Sammy, you`re one of my favorite musicians ever! Rock on and thanks for posting!

He had so many people scrutinizing every aspect of his performance, every time to make sure that it was right on the note at every point, there was no room for improvisation at all and I can only imagine that that would just feel like a cage and it's sad to think about that as magnificent of a voice that Pavarotti had that he was limited by his critics and colleagues as to what he could do. This was two years after Jerry suffered a stroke and had to relearn how to play. Look how happy he is! Way more happy than he was with The Dead after this. He should have just kept on jammin and not tourin!

If he stopped touring that would mean no dead shows after 86. No JFK 87. No Hampton 89. No Without a Net. No Wake up to find out from the coliseum in 1990. So many crucial shows wouldn’t exist today had he stopped touring after his coma

@@zeussierraalex I was at most of the shows you just mentioned & toured pretty much non-stop from 89 to 94 & loved every minute of it. Changed my life & made me who i am & was the best time in my life. I'd still trade it all if it meant he had lived a longer life or even just a happier last few years. even without all the great shows you mentioned, he still had a couple decades worth of amazing music that i could listen to for a lifetime.

Great Video! I miss Jerry but Sammy still remains underrated as a person and musician. It's a shame EVH went to his grave without reuniting with Sammy and Michael Anthony. We as fan's are the true loosers.

So f'n awesome! I think Chickenfoot's "Big Foot" lyric is a nod to this song! "I got both hands on the wheel, and my big foot on the gas"...quite similar phrasing. Love Jerry and Sammy!

I loved the Sweetwater & Village music record shop. It was best record shop on the planet! In the 90's i used to go in every few Sundays and buy Van Halen magazines. Sammy Hagar came in one Sunday while i was diggin through magazines & i missed him, The owner told me Sammy was just in when i came to the front. I was like oh man!!! The owner of the shop did give me some cool stuff signed by Sammy since he knew i was a huge fan. Awesome videos! Thanks 4 posting!

Holy shit! what a gem!! Proof that many do it for the fans and not just for the money. Could you imagine being there? And what about Elvis Costello hell yes! Jerry blazing up an amazing solo on a foreign guitar at that point in his career. Truly astounding.

Jerry playing Elvis Costello's Jazzmaster?
@mangiapetardo
@mangiapetardo 9 жыл бұрын
+MarcBrewer Yes, I think so; I've read a Garcia interview in which he said that, in a certain public performance, he had not his giuitar whit him so he had to choose to use Costello's guitar or Richard Burton's one; he first picked that one of mr. Costello, he didnt like it, he put it down, then he took Burton's instrument and he find the the stirings were as thin as "spider web" (garcia words!) so he took again Costello guitar and played with that; at last he said somethin like "I'll never go to a jam without carrin' my own guitar".

So I opted to play Elvis' guitar as the lesser of two evils. [*laughter*] And I vowed I would never go to another one of those shows without my own. Elvis: It was a whole Three Stooges routine -- "Here, you take my guitar," "No, I'll take your guitar." I think I had Burton's old Telecaster for half a song, and James had my old Martin acoustic which wasn't cranked up so he couldn't solo--and Jerry's struggling with my guitar.
