Just ran across this in my feed. I first heard Sammy at Folk City the night Phil Ochs introduced him and interviewed him at Sis and Gordon's a few days later. It tuned out their apartment was across the street from mine. I helped them with the book Sis eventually published decades later and also published a book on American folk music. I was often at their place for the next year or so. Like Gordon used to say, the only instrument I played was the radio, but I met a lot of other topical songwriters who passed through New York or were their friends. Our paths must have crossed.

@@JoeyMcGowan1 We must have. I was there all the time. Somewhere I still have a tape of that night at Folk City of Sammy's performance and of what turned out to be Phil's last. I gave a copy of the tape to his sister at one of the tribute concerts she used to do. Also went to the bar he opened in SoHo -- Che, I think -- that he trashed opening same night. He would show up at Sis and Gordon's, having slept in the park, and they would make him scrambled eggs. I was reporting then and knew I should write about his decline but he was a hero of mine during the draft resistance days and I didn't have the heart. Still makes me sad every time I hear his music.

@@DavidBookbinder Did you know Bonnie? I’m told She’s still alive and would love to speak to her once Again. After Phil’s death she also attempted Suicide and it was me her mother called to drive up to the Bronx and convince her to go to Mount Sinai with me.

@@JoeyMcGowan1 No, I didn't know her. I didn't know she had attempted suicide. I'm glad you were there for her. I knew several of the songwriters who came through either through interviewing them or through Broadside. One, Jeff Ampolsk, stayed with me for several weeks while he was recording a couple of albums for Folkways. I shot the photos, as I also did for Sis's album "Sundown" and worked on some of the other albums they did with Folkways. I was pretty broken up when Gordon died -- he was kind of a father figure for me. Do you know what became of Jane and her daughter?

Great find! Thanks for posting this. I sent this to Sammy by email. Wondering if he’s forgotten these tracks. His first three albums are his best, but keep going, the later ones are also pretty good. There’s an album of Woody Guthrie covers, a hard to find live one from Italy, Old Time Southern Dream, Misfit Scarecrow, and even a collection of rarities that came out a couple of years ago, on vinyl. I like the two he made for Warner Brothers the best.
