I remember so much about the 5150 album when it first came out in early 1986 …The sheer intense inventiveness of Ed’s guitar ideas,,,,The crazy floating trans Trem on Get Up sounding like lap steel,,,,The sheer groove of Best of Both Worlds,,,Sammy’s mind boggling vocals on Dreams,,,,The sheer brightness of Summer Nights with its quirky interludes of just guitar and the stratospheric backing vocals,,, the riff sequence on the track 5150 and me thinking -‘these are even better riffs than the ones Ed came up with on 1984 ‘ ….Alex’s drum sound and propulsion, the craziness of all the spoken vocal tracks going on during ‘Inside’ …and above all with it came the realisation that EDWARD’S talent was the spark in VH ……Not Roth’s. 5150 was just a GLORIOUS album. ….It lit up the year of 1986 like an H BOMB.

I wore that tape out, and still to this day, I can’t hear it without thinking back to that time. You guys were there with me the entire time. Thanks! Incidentally, another dude I met was a guitar institute grad and cut one of his electrics down to size to fit in his duffle bag. He fashioned some amp out of a piece of radio equipment and was jamming on the back ramp of his APC. He had an acoustic he somehow bought in country that was missing the top ‘e’ string and I bought it from him for $20. I took one strand of commo wire and it was the same diameter as the ‘e’ string, and lo and behold, it actually tuned. I wrote a song called ‘Misguided Souls’ on that acoustic while I was there. True stories 🎶✌️

I miss Van Hagar era Van Halen more than words can express. My eyes are welling up as I write this. That album changed my life. They were so filled with talent and fun and brotherhood. Live Without A Net was the first rock concert I ever saw. To me, it was like being bathed in bright light, like that scene in the Blues Brothers when they're at the church and they discover their mission. Nothing was ever the same again after that.
