The Patriot as deployed in the first Gulf war had a fragmentation warhead which exploded when close to the target. This caused some of the confusion as to effectivess because as designed it was never meant to hit the target. Later it was upgraded to a hit to kill weapon.

@@zakiulrifat6913 because why? Punching a hole to let in the reentry plasma would do a number on any electronics. Patriot was originally designed as an anti aircraft system. Proximity burst munitions have been the standard against aircraft since WW2. Checking three other ABM systems (Sprint, Nuke-Zeus, and Nike-Hurculus), they all used nuclear weapons as the warhead, so targeting didn't need to be that exact. The fact that it could get close at all in the 1990s was quite an accomplishment.

The crew size comparison is a little misleading though. Patriot only requires 3 people to actually operate. The rest is basically logistical support to setup etc. And the patriot can guide something like 18 missiles at once. However only 3 in terminal phaae.

From the MBDA datasheet: "The ASTER SAMP/T system is designed to meet medium and long range air defence needs (force projection, protection of high-value areas and area protection). It's a great system but the information on the number of missiles that can be fired out of date. The Patriot can only track two missiles at a time into one target. That is important against hypersonic missiles. Patriots is a longer range against ballistic missiles, but I love the Astor 30 ability to maneuver under power.

As well as having a high explosive fragmentation warhead that explodes at the closest possible distance to the target it can also hit the target, and according to MBDA it can take down hypersonic missiles like the Russian Kh-47M2 Kinzhal missile.

Would it be possible to break the radar dish down into many small dishes which could then be mounted upon a quad drone which could then be powered by a power cable which is connected to the main radar controller centre which could be hidden under ground in a bunker of sorts which could be updated with multiple flying radar dishes mounted higher upon many ground powered purposes built drones that are placed up to a mile from the main complex in many different directions? It’s just an idea but for the price off such complexes I think they should be protected better than they currently are as they are a liability just now as things stand

They both have good and bad qualities. The SAMP-T has a longer range and takes less people. They are both mobile. And whether the missile has an explosive warhead or is hit to kill doesn’t matter as long as they kill the target. Also, PAC 3 has 16 misdials per launcher so it is now double the SAMP-T.

SAMP-T is shorter ranged than PAC-2. Thing about Patriot is they can put the various flavors of PAC-2 and PAC-3 in the same battery. PAC-2 for range, PAC-3 the really tough targets.

The main advantage of the system over Patriot systems is the 360° cover (while you need several batteries of Patriot to get the same cover) and its mobility; however it has a shorter range; the 180 km indicated in the video is a bit optimistic.

Umm...The PATRIOT has been providing 360-degree coverage since 2017. It can detect low flying and maneuvering drones and cruise missiles in addition to ballistic missiles. The design has one large main array flanked by two smaller arrays, with the main panel still focused on high-altitude threats and the side panels, which are half the size with twice the power of the previous radar set, able to detect slower threats from considerable distance. A spinning array has far less power than the static array and PAC-3 missiles have the ability to fire over the shoulder after missile egress. This channel is completely wrong in its assessments.

The other thing people keep forgetting is that there is a US interceptor with much more capability than Patriot, called THAAD. Patriot is a Tier 2 system. THAADS can do exo intercepts, as well. Patriot PAC 3 MSE is also very capable, there are much less THAAD interceptor missiles produced and the countries that have them either need them for their own BMD (US/SK) or most likely won't give them to Ukraine (Saudi Arabia and UAE). Patriot on the other hand is widely used, has a running production of interceptors, and the personal can be trained easily in Europe.

It is a Franco-Italian system and France has 6 systems, Italy 5 and they are very recent. NATO military analysts say it is the best system in the world and it is not very widespread because each system costs between 800 million and a billion euros. Some rumors say they are already in Kiev.

@@DurpThought A two stage missile like ASTER 30 & SAMP/T is always going to have a performance advantage over a missile with the same total mass. The question of what is to be done with the booster stage comes up. I imagine the booster will have a 'safe drop zone' it can be guided to as will a missile that missed. PAC-2, PAC-3, SAMP/T will have limited capability against the new Russian Hypersonic Threats. The Iskander with it Mach 5.5 speed is a hard target as is the Even Faster Kinzahl but both missiles slow down when used at longer ranges when in ballistic mode. New missiles are needed.

@@DurpThought While I agree with most of your assessment and I haven't found any information on whether the booster of SAMP P/T is recoverable but as the SAM P/T already has actuators (presumably thrust vectoring and aerodynamic) it should be trivial to guide it after separation. I suspect a subsonic glide ratio of at least 5:1 and a supersonic glide ratio of about 3:1. -The DF-ZF HGV is launched by a DF-17 IRBM so not quite as expensive as a boost into space. -i think some kind of defense against HGV is needed and I see no alternative but two stage missiles of considerable size. The best defense of course are systems that can cause great harm to the enemy.

Correct. Uninformed channels like this one only think of Patriot from the 91 Gulf War when it was designed for only air breathing targets. Raytheon PAC-2/GEM and Lockheed Martin PAC-3 Interceptors were designed from the ground up for missile defense. The PAC-3 is a hit-to-kill, not a blast fragmentation warhead.

Ukraine needs to set up thousands of decoy AA positions all over the country so as to totally confuse Russia and when they actually do need to deploy a real system just exchange the decoy in that area for the real system for the desired period of time, Russia can only respond by either trying to hit every position which will be impossible, same thing with F 16 Ukraine needs to start creating thousands of decoys and also they need to create blow up covers to put over real systems to give them the look off inflatable decoy

Aster is most definitely NOT a modified MICA and any source making such a claim ought to be ignored forever. The two weapons were developed entirely separately and by competing companies! Eventually MATRA and Aèrospatiale (and others) were folded into MBDA so there is now some commonality of components. You’re confusing Aster with MICA-VL! When ever Ukraine sets up such a system they should always have atleast 5 decoy systems deploy around the real system and all should be camouflaged to the same degree so the Russians are unable to distinguish if they are real or not this way hopefully the Russians will not have 6 iskander missiles to use and will hopefully hit a decoy given the real system time to escape

The only reason France is allowing ITALY to send the SAMP/T to Ukraine is because the Patriot has performed remarkably.... and it already is effecting sales interest in the SAMP/T. The French need to shot down hyper-sonic missile or show a better kill rate than the older American Patriot system. Their motives are completely self surviving other wise this system would have been deployed earlier.

Macron's France cannot afford to say anything to Italy about what Italy sends to help the Ukrainian.. SAMP/T is an Italian-French project... the Ukrainians have been training for over 6 months in Sargegna (Italy) with that air defense system... the production of 700 Aster missiles was also authorized, most of which goes to Ukraine.. I wouldn't be surprised if they send other SAMP/T systems to Ukraine.. the The decision to send the SAMP / T was made by President Meloni.. if it had been for the French, they would not have sent anything.

@@jonydory622 No ... Approval to send the SAMP/T and which version to send was reached Feb 3 2023 on Feb 21 2023 the agreement between France and Italy was official. On Dec 21 2022 the US government made the decision to send the Patriot. (That's a full two months earlier.) I can't find that the SAMP/T has ever seen conflict!!!
