Many cycling channels on youtube are influenced by higher end bike brands, it could be the people run cycle shops or are sponsored by the big bike brands or simply people who need to justify their investment in a high end bike. There is no question than many walmart bikes are not fit for purpose but there are also many videos where it is clear the walmart bike has not been properly setup or they have purposely chosen the wrong walmart bike to review and test. Even here I don't think Sam has actually serviced and checked the bike much before testing. If I buy a walmart bike I know assembly at the factory will be poor so would probably give it a huge service before riding it making sure everything is correctly tightened and there is grease where it needs to be which would be typical of many LBS bikes before the customer takes it home just so if I was reviewing the bike it would be a fair review. If you are buying a bike from walmart you are buying a bike knowing you will have to service it yourself otherwise you aren't going to be saving much money if you take it to a LBS for all servicing and repairs.

Everyone talks shit about Walmart bikes and hitting local trails and here is Sam using a Walmart bike at whistler. Amazing
@Metal-Possum5 жыл бұрын
Sam does ride a bike pretty damn well though. A decent rider won't break as much stuff as a bad one attempting the same things. Landing straight and smooth makes a huge difference for the longevity of wheels, cranks, forks, etc. Not to mention, the hubs in this bike will be shot after a week's use. Walmart bikes usually fail at the hubs first.
@P5YcHoM4N5 жыл бұрын
@@Metal-Possum But then you can hit up the usual scumbags to get a second hand set of wheels with decent hubs. I have been using the same frame since 2013. Majority of the components have been changed when funds allowed. It has enabled biking on the cheap. For sure if I saved up what I spent I'd have a really expensive bike with all of the toys. But I'd also be saving still because "for 500 more I could get xyz bike." Instead I have had 6 years of fun with no signs of slowing down.
@HulluJanne5 жыл бұрын
@@Metal-Possum If the hubs (and even pedals) are not loosened and adjusted correctly for proper running clearance, they will be shot quite fast. One of the local bike shop keepers said that no matter what wheels (with cup and cone obviously and not really the proper expensive stuff) he takes off from the self, the bearings need to be adjusted or they will eat themselfs. The cup and cone stuff is most probably tightened with a machine with the lightest possible torque, but any torque on the cone nut is too much. Also if one has QR hubs, especially with internal type QR's, like XT (lot of clamping force) they need to be seriously loose. Once the QR is tightened, it pushes the cones inward and the bearings become tighter. I was actually a bit amazed how much there has to be slack in the bearings when they are off the bike. This is at least with some cheap old retro stuff. Almost every bike I ever worked on, had crunchy hubs. Mostly its the cone nut that starts to pit and then goes the balls if the lubrication is not fine. There has been some cases that the balls are still usable (not the brightest, but no scuffing or pitting) and cones are blown.
@Metal-Possum5 жыл бұрын
@@HulluJanne Even properly adjusted department store hubs have a very short life span. I've seen cases where the hub shell itself has collapsed inwards.
@karlfonner75895 жыл бұрын
HulluJanne Agreed. I assembled target bicycles for 10 years. first off the hubs are always assembled way too tight. Second there must be a shortage of grease in China. However,I do have a couple their bicycles that have 3000 miles plus on them. I’m in my late 50s and I know these retro bikes like the back of my hand. Being that said sometimes running rigid is fun!

I love this. Most videos about Walmart bikes are intentionally breaking them, or bitching about how shit they are. Of course its shit, compared to a $2000 bike. This video just goes to show a good rider can ride any bike good. If you're looking for an affordable way to get into the hobby, perfect. There is no reason to buy an insane bike if you don't have the skills or endurance to use it. Same with any hobby, sure a Martin guitar is nice, but if you can only play one damn chord it doesn't matter what you have.

Sam has the skills to make up for the bike’s crap tires, pedals, and especially brakes. A beginner isn’t going to manage well on that. "One of the most positive people on KZbin and definitely way beyond." Your tricks and videos are uniquely good Sam and cut perfectly. As children we were always on the move with old scrap bikes because we didn't have the money for new ones. But they were the best "hell machines" for us. We were always on the move beyond the "wear limit". Back then, speedway was our motivation. It's been over 35 years now. But the bike, whether road bike or MTB, remains my constant companion (now of course only with a helmet))).

Watched tons of riding videos (including several from red bull sponsored riders) but this was probably the most positive, fun and infectious enthusiastic riding video I've watched in the last couple of years. Thanks for the awesome review. Im pretty sure some kids with not a ton of cash are going to be pumped after watching this video and buying that bike.

If someone actually finds that bike can you post on here that you did. This could become a traveling bike. Next person takes it to another park, films it, drops it off for another person to move it on again.

Thank you for not trashing the WalMart bike. This video shines a real positive light on entry level mountain biking. And even then entry level may not be the best term to use. I should say bikes to gain experience on. Of course your prowess plays into it, but still... for less than $200, someone can find themselves hitting trails or just cruising around town.
