I started small when I was fist learning. I found that by going a little faster and faster over the same table that my bike naturally began to come off the ground. Then it was actually easier to jump the table than try to ride over it. But when I started popping I started overshooting the same jump! It actually was a nice progressive learning curve and I learned that I could use different techniques for different situations and results.

Definitely one of the better jump tutorials out there. Many of us understand the basics of jumping but it's the finer details which to the beginner, are crucial in understanding the whole picture and acquiring the confidence to go bigger. You touched on aspects of jumping which I haven't seen in other vids, and I've seen many! Well done, mate and thanks for taking the time to make yet another jump vid, but one which is tailored to those of us who desperately want to take it to the skies, but haven't yet attained a ticket! Cheers 👍🏻

Somehow I knew you'd have the most sensible advice on how to jump. I'm a beginner jumper and am glad to hear that it's okay to let the jump do the work for you when starting out. I'll stick to this method for now, working on speed. feeling the jump and getting a decent landing in.

Also important for beginner jumpers is to slow down your rear rebound. I used to have my rear rebound fast and would wonder why it felt like the back bucking. A good reference my friend gave me was to set set your rear rebound slower than it takes your bike to come back up under you after sitting on it with both feet on the ground, and standing up.

Excellent tips here Sam. I used to be able to jump some jumps without even thinking about them, until I started watching too many "how to" jump videos. They all talk about the bunny hop technique. Then I started overanalysing and feeling really uncomfortable on jumps which I previously had no problems on. Just recently I re- discovered what you are referring to here, that is "just let the bike flow" under you. You have now given me some confidence that I am headed in the right direction. Thanks Sam

I totally agree with what was said about bunny hopping off the lip. Learning technical maneuvers on a bicycle is hard because you use so much of your body and brain all at the same time. Your legs, back, arms, fingers, eyes, and conscious mind are always occupied just Riding in a straight line. Trying to simply remember the steps of a tecnique right as your about to perform it is difficult as is, monitor speed, lean back, pull bars slightly, bring bars toward waste in the air, adjust pitch if bike, absorb impact. That's so much to think about for a new rider all at once plus coping with fear. Simply relaxing and. Unweighting the bike is a great tip that I'd recommend versus trying to perform a completely different technique (bunny hop) within your jumping tecnique in itself.

Sam, I had some jumping coaching from Tom Dowie who also taught us the non popping method - so glad to see someone else recommend the same technique for beginners. With the popping method other you tube videos seem to be a bit misleading by suggesting the jumping technique is as the American bunnyhop, however when you watch them jump their hips never move towards the back tire (like they would with a bunnyhop). Great video many thanks

Great tips Sam!! You talk about getting into the air and landing.. but what about having control in between? ..if you could talk a bit about how to control the bike while in the air I beleive it will be great for beginners like me. I used to go like "dead sailor" when jumping, the back wheel always shifted to the side and it is so awful, and dangerous. Very recently I discovered one way to be in control, is to apply a little push (or tilt) to the side on the handlebar (apologize for not knowing the right terms in english).. anyways, I would love to know more about being in control after taking off, and where should I focus from now on!! Cheers mate!! Your videos are just great! Keep in on, to the sky!!! ;D

Stopped This Vid at 5:38 to comment THANK YOU!!! Best advice I’ve ever gotten.. do less not more when learning, but take things at the right SPEED and you don’t need to do any extra! Jumps are the scariest things to me as a golf pro.. but when you do less and free yourself up then you will be able to do more then you maybe previously thought possible. Anywho random thought that made sense doing less to get more out of jumps.. anywho starting the vid back up kuz it’s not over yet! Haha

Great advice, my biggest issue when first learning was not relaxing and trying to pop too hard. This led to the dreaded "dead sailor" affect. As I learned to relax and let the bike move underneath me, that awful feeling went away. The popping comes later and I usually use it when my speed isn't high enough to clear naturally.

Yes, I think it's because they always cut down the videos to be honest. You don't really get too see much in the them besides just the presenter talking. Their videos are often way too short in my opinion, and I highly doubt it's because they don't have more footage. They just have this thing for really short videos.. It's like a trend these days it seems and it seriously hurts the amount of usable information on KZbin imo.

I was buiding up to something like this and built a cheap and nasty dirt jump bike (2nd hand DMR frame etc ) as i wanted to nail it sooooo bad. After watching this last night i was itching to go have a blast at my local trails and this video helped shit loads!!! Sam. I never was able to get height or distance until I learned to push off the lip with my legs. It seems obvious to someone skilled, but a beginner will actually soak up that last important step due to fear. The push off the top is the final cherry on top for height, distance, and last second changes to the angle the bike will be sending. I think you are pulling back and pushing with your legs more than you realize because you’re so talented.

Great video. Yep your right. Every time I try to boost a jump I end up landing front wheel heavy. Scary as can be. Feels good pulling off a front wheel landing after I realized I lived through it:)

I've always been apprehensive about hitting jumps with speed because I'm scared of falling off and hurting myself but, you made it look so easy, next time I'm racing towards a massive jump and my brain is screaming to break, I'm going to Liston to Sam and hit that jump like a boss. So look out for my next comment if there is one and I will update you on my progress. Cheers mate.

I am a Freestyle BMX rider and have ridden a tiny bit of hardtail. You gotta just let your bike flow off the lip, trying to control it by pulling hard or push the bike down never ends well. You also have to learn to absorb the landing with your legs and arms, don't just rely on the bike to do this. BMX teaches this really quick with 20" wheels and 110PSI tires! LOL Great video, people always say to pull up and that just isn't the way to learn.

Sam Pilgrim you are a legend simplicity is the key to do jumps with speed. I am a bit worried that I may have too much speed I ride a full rigid MTB

Hi @SamPilgrim, im a starter when it comes to jumping. Your unweighting tip worked, I tried my favorite table tops last weekend and had some little air time. I will take a video next time and tag you.

Defo made me feel more at ease thinking about hitting the bigger jumps. Just gotta put it into action now. Broke my elbow the start of the year and I've only just really got into the hobby so pretty nervous about getting back out there. Not so much now after seeing this video. Cheers 😁

fun style of teaching, hang loose in the office lol. Non-condescending way to approach other people who enjoy mtb, and with multiple detailed examples of how and how not to jump on e-mtb, full sus, and hardtail. Thanks Sam

Great stuff. The "attack" position with bent arms prevents a beginner from pulling the bars up. Pulling the bars usually ends in the bars turning towards your dominant side, meaning you land with the wheel turned left or right. Obviously this is going to throw you off to one side or the other. Arms bent, nice and relaxed and just take your weight off the pedals about 2/3 the way up the take off ramp. I like that this guy pushes safety first. As I am sitting here typing with a broken neck I can definitely advocate SAFETY FIRST!!!!
