The grades are based on the amount of lower resistance metal. Gold, silver, copper. So on those motherboards, those plastic bits that stick up in a row have gold in them. Copper would be the second most common you'd find. Silver isn't used all that much. There would be tin & lead due to the solder used throughout. There are a lot of CFCs in the plastics and other components. Those chips would have some higher grade metals in low quantity, as they get into smaller and smaller sizes. Back in the 80's a transistor might be visible to the naked eye, but they could probably fit 100 in that same spot today. The connection points would be where the metal would be.

I took out a garage filled with electronics from the 60s, 70s and 80s. The backs look caked with gold.. have no idea what to do with it

In the 80s a friend of mine was in the scrap business with respect to computers being taken out of service and these were all main frames. The amount of gold and silver let alone the copper made it a very profitable business. I remember helping him carry bars of silver that were about the size of tube bricks end to end into his basement for storage. he told me at the time they were probably close to 90% pure silver but they had to be refined. When you look at all of the circuitboard, chances are they were ones that failed and were replaced by new ones. My son dated a gal in the 90s who worked at a circuitboard manufacturer and she was instrumental in some of the design. As I suspected, she confirmed that if a component fails, obviously the entire board goes down . Someone with the proper inch and no Howell could easily fix most of those boards. But we are not in that area any longer, we want to replace the entire unit and scrap everything else. I’m fairly sure they don’t use much in the way of gold and/or silver any longer. He also refined certain materials to recover platinum and palladium. It was quite an education knowing him. It also is fun to think back about the size of the computer on his flatbed Mack truck coming into his work shop and how nowadays something that large would be replaced by a thumb drive as an example for storage. Nothing stays the same.

Doesnt look high grade, But you need to show more of it. Just better Mid grade. High grades are your telecomm, cisco, wireless, expensive higher quality server boards, laptop and hardrive boards. Gold flashing, fingers, fancy chips, heavy gold plated connectors. The old addage of "You get what you pay for" makes sense when you start breaking things apart. Just my opinion though. The connectors are usually a good giveaway. You could shoot EWaste Ben an email with some photos, he may be inclined to offer some advice he is pretty friendly .

It does look like the person those boards came from were pretty savage with the removal of good components. I'd be surprised if the majority of them made mid grade

What do PCI slots have in them? Are they loaded with gold or something? Is that why you suggest that?

Often the grade isn't due to the gold content exclusively but also due to the extra weight of heavy non gold bearing components that if left on a high-grade board bring it's value down simply due to the fact that you're overpaying for it when you are buying by weight

I have heard that up to 2 kg per ton can be had from the motherboards.

Those gold chips don’t seem to gave much gold. I haven’t run them exclusively but they come off messy so I just leave them now.

Most of the processor and memory chips are missing from the "high grade". Torch off the components and incinerate them. Process for precious metals. Incinerate the boards and process for copper & tin.

So would it be a good idea to just chuck ALL of them together into a furnace and melt them? Or would that be a pain in the ass as far as being able to separate the different precious metals? I guess I'm wondering if they can all be melted down all at once, together, then once you are left with just the metals, separate the metals. Or is it easier to piece things out and separate them by what you know has certain metals in them from the start and then melt them so that you don't have to separate the precious metals after they've been melted?

@Johnson Williams for pins and things with flash gold, but many IC chips, especially older ones, have solid gold(or mostly gold) bond wires. Major processors know which things have lots of gold, and what doesn't. They don't share what they know. The tiny bond wires can be gold, silver, copper, or even aluminum.

It may be but when you process in large quantities it adds up fast provided there's plenty of chips left on the boards, unlike this vid. It really boils down to one variable. Running costs. If the boards are free and you are in a country where acids are freely available and not overpriced it becomes a good little venture

@@scrappydoo7887I see you mentioned acids. Are you recommending that it's a better idea to use chemicals to get the precious metals out of that stuff instead of melting them down?
