i have made multiple typography projects using this same technique but i always made my own brushes using black brush stroke images that are converted into shapes by auto tracing them.never knew we can directly use a png into a brush like that, thats an addition to my knowledge...thanks for sharing... also, we can alter the size of the edges of each stroke using width tool, that helps you to refine your strokes much better and make these more realistic...

Have you tried using image trace to vectorize the pictures of the brush strokes you took? With the right image trace settings you could get a nice vector version and then use that to create your art brush. Then you will have vector version of the brush that is resolution independent.

A way to not get the white backgroud ir to use rasterize instead of flatten transparency, you can ajust the resolution of the image

This sort of stuff is really great in Affinity Designer too (and the redraw is much better and faster/realtime in AD which made me move to it for this type of vector AND bitmap art). I still miss Creature House Expression from years back with its skeletal strokes (and their Livingcels animation software based on the same tech which only made it to beta) Art stroke imports (and use) into AE would be a great addition to AE but Affinity Designer and Illustrator do a pretty good modern job of Creature House Expression on the still/non-animated side.
