EPISODE 135
After a quick review of our open house weekend, we meet the main characters who will be responsible for Tally Ho’s electrical system, as well as the other systems in the boat - plumbing, heating, diesel, etc. Tyson makes a great start with the electrical supply and distribution system, wiring in loads of shiny and exciting blue boxes from Victron. We also catch up with Patrick and George, who have both been busy with other projects on the boat, including some satisfying bronze-work and a Cherry cabinet / wardrobe in the aft cabin.

Remember when there was such anguish over small town litigation regarding the original build location? As it turned out the forced move brought this project to the place it needed to be. A lesson that sometimes what seems to be a terrible event in life can actually be the gateway to a better and much needed new path.

I just have to point out something that never leaves my head when I watch these videos. The people who donate money to you are actually paying for a learning and entertainment experience. Much like paying your cable bill or going to a theme park. Difference is, we know EXACTLY where the money is going. Leo, in turn, is generating a lot of wealth for a lot of people. I would expect that his crew is paid. He has bought a lot of machinery and tools. A lot of supporting businesses are hired (The electrical system is beautiful.) Local food vendors, etc. etc. This is a lot more than a boat build and I applaud the lot of you for it.

As far as the batteries being close together. Of course people want to be helpful, thinking of potential problems. But if they had thought about it then it would be reasonable to assume that others have also thought about it. As a recently retired electronic engineer I have often have had to explain that, yes, I have taken the application into account and took a very conservative approach as far as the conditions equipment can be used under. I have considered factors that most people would never have thought of. That's my job. edit: Was my job :)

Visited the open house since I've been following this from the beginning. Met some wonderful people in the line. Some comments struck me, like "this is one of the top 10 boat builds in the world." Maybe that's true. In real life, I work on rocket engines, but happen to be a certified ABYC marine electrician too. Marine electronics is it's own "thing", where every installation is somewhat customized. This electrical installation is excellent as well as beautiful. That's because someone spent many many hours planning the install, understanding best practices of the trade. Hats off making the electrical system as nice as the rest of the boat. Best wishes.

Thanks for doing the open house! It was a real pleasure meeting all of you, and touring the boat & shop. There was a bin of wood cut-offs, labeled free for the taking, on the way out, so I grabbed a small piece of purple heart. Later, at the wooden boat show nearby, I also grabbed four small pieces of bronze from the Port Townsend Foundry. I will make a nice plank plaque out of this with a drawing of Tally Ho on it - a wonderful souvenir of the open house!

Except the zip tied main power distribution cables… melt one melt all….. pretty sure that doesn’t meet electrical codes. Epic project though, I’m a little bummed that they beat the hook on this electrical trend but I’m hoping that it is a success. So many boats out here that have gone that way that or just a giant money pit of batteries and precious metals.

Aligning screw slots looks nice, but the result is also that not all the screws are tightened with the same torque (~preload-force). Wood is more forgiving; in metl contructions this would be a definite No-Go.

@nickmaclachlan5178
@nickmaclachlan5178 Жыл бұрын
@@cliveramsbotty6077 Without sounding too condescending, it's simply to protect the cables. Yes, they already have insulation, but that is soft and pliable and will wear easily if not protected. On a wooden boat like this there's obviously no danger of shorting out through the hull like on a metal build, but protecting the power cables from chafing on each other and their mounts etc is very important for the extended life of the system. Soldering lugs this size is tricky due to the large cross sectional area of the cable, mechanical connection is a much better method, although if this was my build, I might be tempted to solder AND crimp just to get the highest surface area contact possible........

If the OG Tally Ho had electrical way back when, imagine what early 20th century wiring would have been like. Single solid copper wire coated in gutta percha (look that up) with a cotton cloth wrap over it attached to lead acid batteries and through a fuse box with maybe 4 fuses that screw in. Probably installed by someone that knew Tom Edison personally. Wire would be hung with knob and tube fixtures below decks which was very modern for the times.

I'll guess that Tally Ho had no electrics as built - the lighting, cooking, heating & engine were all kerosene-powered. A small amount of gasoline would be carried as 'starter fluid' for the hand-cranked engine.

Hello my friend. Your supposition of how the original Tally ho was equipped is quite possibly true, however, I was doing a then versus today comparison of technology. The current available equipment was the stuff of imagination for H. G. Wells when Tally Ho was first launched. Best regards, Gio'

Your electrical systems technician is taking charge…I see what you did there Leo. Everything is looking so great. To paraphrase a line from my favorite movie: Grizz says: You’ve come far pilgrim. Jeremiah Johnson replies: Huh…seems far. Cheers Leo, you are becoming a legend by saving a legend!

gobsmacked by Patrick's cabinet making skills, man he's got some skills now. And love the electrical, great seeing it come together. It's always been a mystery for me in boats I've sailed before, but seeing this from the ground up makes so much more sense

Leo you should invest in a drill press vise. They don't cost much and can prevent injuries. Copper and brass like to grab drill bits and spin your parts cutting whatever is in the way.

There’s no way you can squeeze all the fun and endless worries into these videos, those who are involved are very very lucky people to be there living with the progression of this project.. I work in rv’s , and the quality of the battery installation was beyond top notch, that’s some serious specialist work that you can trust in.. hats off gentlemen.

Those of us that have followed you for awhile know how you sincerely investigate each and every decision you make on systems and boat design. I am impressed and you never need to explain why you did this or that. It's your boat and your making it extremely sea worthy.

It always amazes me just how beefy the cables have to be on DC systems. Looking around my apartment, seeing all these tiny cables running at 240v, but just an amp or two. Compared to those monster cables, it is just fascinating.

You know in this day and age of super high tech focus, it is absolutely amazing how you have taken so many individuals from such varied backgrounds and ended up with so many "craftsmen" (including "females" in that title) who have and are doing such AMAZING and totally professional work!!! For a viewer almost eight decades old who has NEVER wanted to do anything other than craft and/or any other kind of mechanical/skill work, watching you and your crew apply so much skill and un-limited pride into this wonderful, quite literally, "labor of love" is so gratifying and pleasing!!! I only wish I could be part of it!!! So, MASSIVE KUDO'S Leo to you and the entire crew of the Tally Ho project!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🍷🥂
