EPISODE 161
In this episode we talk about how close Tally Ho’s launch might be, we talk about the work that is left to do, and we talk about how you can come and see us and the boat in person! We also see some carving work on the bulwark planks, as I try to replicate the original designs.

While it would be good if she sailed in a future Fastnet race should they risk her in one. This years race was a near disaster for many with extreme sailing conditions with I believe a number of yachts sinking and many damaged Tally Ho is too precious a hull to be risked in this way. If a modern yacht will struggle in these conditions what would they do to a 100 year old design.

I am a fan of gold cove stripes, especially if her name will be in gold too. Elegant ladies such as Tally Ho deserve a little something special to show our love and appreciation for their beauty and dependability. IMHO A gold cove strip is understated admiration of the blood sweat and tears you have put into the boat. Everyone needs a little spoiling now and then to remind us how special they are. I agree with Leo that gold would be too ostentatious. I think it would be nice to use a paint color that mimics the color of all that lovely purpleheart timber that he turned into the keel and centerline many moons ago. I’ve been watching since the first video, six years ago, and, without any serious woodworking skills, had actually thought about flying across the country, that first year, and just offering to cook for the crew. One of my brothers moved to a small town on the Seattle side of the sound last year, and I had already arranged to get there for the Festival, hoping that the big door might be open when I wandered by so I could get a peek inside. The experiences had, experience gained and the memories of those will stay with all and are worth far more to far more people in the end than a mere boat (however well found) for a likeable fellow from England. Leo, I think back to when you used to say that the launch was "another 2 years away", and in saying that you also said that was not a deadline, but a guess as to how much work remained. I have no idea how much work remains, but I appreciate your candor in reminding all of us that there is much, much, much more work to do. Still, as you say, it is very exciting to hear you say the word, "Launch." Thanks for the focus of today's video - with all of the progress, it is important to temper expectations.

An amazing and talented old world craftsman reincarnated into the 21st Century. As a retired educator, I have a smile in my heart for your passion Leo 14:41 . You are the essence of what it means to ‘teach’. Thst us the ability to present information so well that the students want to take the information and build on it themselves. You Sir, have a God given gift and direction in life. And we are all blessed to observe your work and art.

Its been a long project, but well worth the work. Leo, you have a hand built boat, you and friends built... great job! I'm in northwest Colorado and plan on coming for the launch. I've been a patreon from the beginning. Keep on brother. Great carving work. The precision y'all do in building Tally Ho is seriously impressive.

I am a fan of gold leaf in that carving. But if not, as decently dark color is fine. Those Albert Strange carvings are also reminiscent of waves and ripples. Good work, as always. Also, another walk around video would be great.

By far Leo, your videos are what I look forward to the most on KZbin. Everything y'all do is pretty much some of the finest carpentry that I watch, and I'm in the trades. What I would like to see is some mistakes, and your work arounds, and how you might use different tools to handle unique situations. What else do y'all have in your bag of tricks? Awesome craftsmanship. Tally Ho is going to be a dream to sail....and maintenance will be a joy with all for thought put into the build.

I started watching in the beginning when I was recovering from knee surgery and I have learned so much from y'all and the great work you all have done. This is an Amazing experience which I have shared with others. I wish I had the time to come out and help but for now, I'm really enjoying the rebuild. Keep rolling Brother, She Looks amazing..

I'm of two completely different minds: one hoping for continued perfection to the day she's done and the other that the finish date will always be "two years" from now, no matter what "now" we are discussing. It's hard to imagine Saturday nights without tracking Tally Ho's progress. Bless you all for the inspiration.

So inspirational to see this much progress...and the results are awesome ! Having operated the "Lone Pine" Boat Yard in Wilmington, CA I've witnessed many old-boat restorations. Shipwrights like Warren Tweedy, Ed Harrison, Joel Andrews, Jim Clove, Jerry Capehart, Ken Baxter, did some of their best work here. I'm now in my eighties and watching those "artists" working their magic on Tally Ho gives me a warm feeling to see these skills being preserved !

Hi Leo. Can you please consider some more hand sketched plan and schematic videos? They were my favourites so far from the entire playlist and I imagine once you build toward launch and sailing the opportunity for them will fade. Side / top view with interior, and an update on the rig plans would be great. Maybe an updated plumbing and electrical plan? Cheers!

Hi Leo, please do another walk around the boat. So much has been done and accomplished that I love to see what and what the state of all the projects are! Thanks in advance! I used to (in my younger years) sail on a wooden pilot cutter on the North sea and Dover channel, so I'm really jealous, but also proud that you build this beautiful ship. Lot of luck with Tally Ho! Tally Ho is certainly deserving of having her golden crown, 👑 after all, her destination is to the land of the Monarchy. 🇬🇧 👑 🏰 🗡️ 🛡️ ⚜️ ⚓ 💂 ⛵ 🌊 Does any of these resemble that which your own hands carved, I think so!

Hello Leo, thank you for another lovely video. There's two comments I'd like to make, Gold leaf for your carvings is an excellent idea and the quality of your work deserves that kind of respect, considering that the rebuilt Tally Ho has become a work of marine art. The second comment speaks to your concern that we "Patron viewers" want you to launch before the project is completed and I do not believe that is true and isn't a concern at all. I love to watch your videos of all the wonderful people recreating the new Tally Ho. I also supported another channel building a sailboat and they launched too early and are struggling to complete the many tasks left undone and that beautiful boat now looks a mess and might never be completed because they now live on it. When you choose an action, you choose the consequences of that action. Even though I've never met you, I feel that I do know you and want the best for you today and tomorrow. Cheers from Canada.

Beautiful carving job. Everything that has gone into Tally Ho is befitting a fine classic yacht- from the breathtaking varnished teak joinery to the copious custom, polished bronze floors, knees and fittings. I hope you give her what she deserves with the proper gold leaf. It's not ostentatious, it's correct. Nothing enhances carved scrollwork on a wooden boat like real gold leaf. You may not think yourself as a "yachtsman" but Tally Ho is a yacht and you are a first-rate yacht restorer and now a yacht owner. That being said, I think your judgement is spot-on, so whatever you decide, I'm sure it will be done well and look great.

gold leaf cove lines are pretty common in sailing as you should know, and its not really that expensive. I dont think anyone could fault you for using it, its a great boat and you have a lot to be proud of in all the work done to rebuild her. 1910 was of course the Gilded Age, so it is historically appropriate.

Awesome progress Leo! I can remember the first time you went aboard and went down below and saw the condition. You have come so far. I am retired from doing this type work when I was partners with another guy and know what’s involved! I know how hard it is to get qualified people to work on wooden boats these days and can’t believe the talented people that you have been working with. You are very lucky and I couldn’t be happier for you. You have poured your life into this project Leo and it shows. Tally Ho has turned into a beautiful vessel thanks to you and the crew that has helped all along. Hats off to you buddy. 👍👍👍👍

Agree about the gold leaf. I would also worry about how well it would wear, and how easily and clearly it could be repaired. Just about any color would look good there- red, hunter green, blue, etc. Even brown. Goldenrod might be a wonderful accent color. If you're set on a metallic, a dark bronze would go well.
