EPISODE 147
The sun is shining in the boatyard, but the temperature has dropped - there’s a thin layer of ice on the water in the marina. Inside a large green hanger several boatbuilders struggle to wrestle aluminium diesel tanks into a wooden boat.
Meanwhile, the cockpit footwell is subjected to more vacuum-bagging, to glue up the beautiful teak cladding.

I wasn't very clear about the electrical locker - a lot of people are asking about venting! These HATCHES will be water- and air-tight, but the locker itself is vented with openings in the underside to draw cool air from the bilge and extraction fans in the back that blow it into the engine room. The batteries all have temperature regulation built-in and will limit themselves or even shut down if they get too hot. These are LiFePO4 batteries which do not off-gas and are far more stable than Li-Ion batteries. Location - yes, it's not the perfect place, but the batteries are heavy enough that they should be low and centred. As with every single thing on any boat, it's a compromise, and that's why I'm going to be putting in a lot of effort to make sure the hatches are fully watertight. I'm very pleased with their location in terms of how effectively this space is used and weight distribution.

Thank you for the educational reply. I boat experience was taking the rusty mortar box to the creek and trying to use as a boat. . It sank . But I managed to get it out of the water. On my way home a guy stopped and wanted to know if I wanted to sell the mortar box . I got a ride home but dad would not sell him the mortar box.

Damn. I must say: this channel is by far my most favourite and comforting channel of all of KZbin. Also I am just blown away by the sheer fine furniture making methods of making this ship. Every bloody detail is so meticulously measured and fitted. Just a joy to watch. I am very glad I was so clever starting to support this channel early on. And I am extremely happy I still do. I will right up until Tally Ho sails to The Netherlands so I can see her in the wood, so to say. And hey what the heck, might do well after that event. 🙂

@@_blento_2637 That's not what I said, though, is it? I said making the intro different for every video. He could have had a set intro clip that he would play for every video. He could have had a canned intro text that he would repeat every time. But he makes the intro slightly different every time. Why do people never properly read a comment before replying? Is the need to be a contrarian so overpowering?

Hey Tally Ho fans: While waiting for this video to publish I re-watched episodes #1, #2, and #3. They barely add up to 15 minutes for all three - check 'em out. Leo demonstrates superiority over so many classics: He's like Mister Rogers, Bob Villa, Jaques Cousteau, and Steve Irwin all rolled into one person while riding into the sunset like a mod-rocker. Congrats on the fuel tank fit - that took a little math.

@@ScottESchmidt To be fair, Leo deserves a big TV budget, luckily he is a great guy and would rather let us have the content for free instead of it being on something like Discovery+ or the like; hidden behind a paywall. Imagine all the hard decisions he's had to make during this project that would've been non-issues with a big time budget like Discovery would've given him. Not my only comment here, but my last. Most of you will not remember those fantastic days. Most of you weren’t even born. But back in 1963/1964 in Britain, everyone was enthralled by The Beatles. “What would their new single sound like” was the big question that even my parents were caught up in. Now history has repeated itself for some of us. Now its “What’s Leo’s next video going to be about? The rudder, the bulwark rails, the electrical system, the mast?” Now, that takes some doing. You have created some historic times for us.

In this day and age, laser scanning an area as a prelude to producing a CAD file of the tank design is relatively easy. The yacht is going to be finished and the collection of videos will continue generating interest and revenue for decades. I’m amazed at how the audience has grown since the project began. It’ll be awesome seeing Leo out piloting Tally Ho on various adventures with, what I expect to be, an ever expanding audience. Great job 👏

Good to see the diesel tanks and cockpit placed! Your craftsmanship continues to amaze me! I often wonder what it was like for my ancestors in Holland as they built sailboats to travel to the Americas.

Lauren, you ROCK! - Those tanks are show-pieces for aluminium welding. They are a fitting match for the standards of workmanship on the rest of the boat. To make these on you own time is a huge contribution to the project. Thank you!

Leo this is probably my favorite channel the work is nothing but perfect I am impressed with every episode you are a great builder but also a great filmmaker. The crew is funny and the home made commercials are funny. You and your crew are genuine and it comes through on film. Thank you for another great video please keep up asking "so what are you up to" to the crew.

A few times now I thought to myself it would be nice to wait for a few videos to be uploaded so's I could have me a longer time to watch and enjoy. But I cant help myself. I have to watch and see what these guys are up to the moment I see another video. Also, the craftsmanship on those tanks is absolutely beautiful.

Kind of cool how in the end Leo will be a millionaire on paper through donations. Well deserved. He can "loft the lines" with design, woodwork, edit videos, and is a great 'host" of sorts. This is better than anything I have ever watched on tv. History is being made here before our eyes, preserved forever in the digital stratosphere, and then to be physically manifested sailing about the globe. Some people will just see a boat with the other boats....but WE KNOW.

Yes, something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. But this boat has the proven provenance and the complete video record of its rebuild. It could easily be worth a million dollars/pounds. My question to Leo would be “What are you going to do with the rest of your life?” Do you just want to sail? In that case he has the skills now to make videos and narrate them. He could probably do a deal with a TV company to distribute them. Although they may make stupid production demands, like installing a stupid crew member that everyone hates! Alternatively, he could (I think should) progress the Sampson Boat Company to build/restore quality boats. He now has the contacts, and that will last a lifetime. Anyway, his choice. Personally, I think he just wants to sail….

I believe the Pacific Northwest has a long history of aluminum boat and airplane building. It's an art form for sure, but one that is more common than you might expect compared to other parts of the country and world.

@@edwardschmitt5710 You misunderstood my comment. My point was that this skill is more common in some areas like the PNW than others. That doesn't make it any less impressive.

Such big steps! The finality of bolting in the tanks, hiding bits of the hull for “a long time” seemed to hit home: imagining the long life still to come for this fine boat. And that smile when sitting in the beautiful cockpit, at the helm, was such a sweet moment to share, thank you!

Very few KZbin channels have the quality that Leo puts forth every other Saturday (selfishly I wish for weekly, but then how would the work get done)? Truly a gift to be an outstanding shipwright, sailor (watch the vids on his sailing and you know), and cinematography extraordinaire. Leo, I watch each video at least twice, and often go back to early videos and watch them yet again.

Hello, you are right Monsieur . On small airplan, the ventilation is by natural flux(if it is the good word) with surpressure or the reverse , depending of a lot technical definition. There is NO engine.🤔🤨😉🙂🙂
