He asks why his mother in law didn't just keep her job and give them money? She kept her job, she was on a sabbatical, and those are usually paid. How much of her money did she use to help care for his child? She didn't take time off to "care for this child." she took time off to help her daughter, who obviously wasn't getting any help at home.

It’s very strange for a person seemingly OBSESSED with families and family values and how children should be raised and how women should behave etc etc to turn around and claim that money is just as good as having a mother and/or grandmother actually caring for and nurturing a newborn. Extremely weird.

They won't do anything. If someone dies without healthcare they send thoughts and prayers, if someone suffers without dying they just don't care. According to them, you need to lift yourself up by the bootstraps so if you're sick, then work and get money to pay your own doctor. See Trump? He pays his own doctor, see all those republican elites who were born into wealth and try to stop you from gaining more money, they pay their own doctors, so do like them. Once their daddy gave them 1 million, they lifted themselves up by their bootstraps and paid their own doctor, why don't you do like them?

I hate this so much because in a lot of ways JD Vance is right. It *is* better for children to have multiple adults outside of their parents around to partake in the child rearing. It teaches them that they can rely on others besides their parents and gives them stability and comfort as they grow. The idea of the “nuclear family” ( *and* its “necessity”) has in many ways *destroyed* our society. Studies have shown that extended family households are not only better for the upbringing of children, but they’re just better overall. They have better financial stability, better emotional support *in* the house (obviously this is contingent on your family *not* being aßholes), and a better distribution of household responsibilities. But of course JD doesn’t actually care about this stuff and had to taint this really important issue with his straight up misogyny.🙄

Now to be fair, liberalism (classical, not to be confused with American liberalism) is the philosophical basis for capitalism. Obviously tho, Vance is a classical liberal and a conservative and supports an agenda that only reinforces this idea. He wants to talk about family but his policies and ideals conflict. capitalism is the reason western countries are so individualistic & do not encourage extended family to live together, like the example jd gives of his mother-in-law living with them for a year. infants in western countries cry more because there are not many people who are there to take on the role of comforting them and getting their needs met, it’s normally just two parents if that. and it’s because of capitalism.

I left NYS for Florida because I wanted a job at Disney World, but the only reason I could do that is it used to be SO affordable to live here. Right next to the resort. Disney now pays 3x what it did when I started- ($6.50/hr) but I’ve done the calculations and it basically just covers the difference in rent, if you’re lucky. I used to make my rent in a week in 2006. Again, _right behind WDW._ Now I couldn’t do that with the same job despite them starting CMs at $18/hr today. It’s fucking bonkers.

Now, I'm not sure, because I have never been able to afford a new car, but I seem to understand that a typical car loan agreement is for 6 years. Does he think people are paying over a quarter of a million dollars for an average car? Is that how much he's used to paying? Is he incapable of understanding the real value of a dollar to the average person? Whatever it is, he's way out of touch.

Tenured professors who take sabbatical are usually paid (depending upon the institution pay can range from full pay to a percentage of the full pay) during that sabbatical. How many professions will pay an employee let alone allow them to take a one year sabbatical? US is a country in which 20% of full time employees get zero paid vacation time and less than 50% of part time employees have paid vacation time. Even worse, roughly 25% of all workers in the US have no paid sick days. Is JD Vance willing to sponsor legislation to guarantee all workers paid sick days, paid vacation days, and paid parental leave?

this bullshit about how mothers should not work is kind of fucking infuriating to me. if my mother hadn't worked then my family (me, brother and my father & mother) would probably just been barely scraping by on what my dad made at his job. instead, my mom got a job too, which got some extra scratch so we could afford to have some nice things every now and then, and have a good jumping-off point for going to college and ultimately moving out on our own. because *that's what good parents do.*
