I gotta ask. And im not being mean. I genuinely want too know. Whats the appeal for you? I'll admit, watching the clip of him play the synthesizer badly with the full orchestra, was very funny. Conceptully that's great. Its another thing to dedicate 30, 40 mins of your day listening to someone badly play the piano.
@MisterBadman2 ай бұрын
I mean, it’s art!!!🤷 Some art ain’t fer some folk!! What’s your idea of a significant piece of Art??
@drericfritz2 ай бұрын
@@thenewyearsgrinch That's a fair question! Remember that all art is subjective: it may work for me and not for you and both our experiences are valid. As a professional musician, I really like what H. Jon Benjamin is doing! The music works on several different levels for me. There's the obvious surface badness that elicits the cringy giggles out of me. It's bad and therefore funny. Like you pointed out about the Strauss orchestral piece. Excellent. Then there is my absolute admiration to Benjamin's commitment to the bit. He is bad at playing keyboard and it shows. And then has recorded THREE full albums! It reminds me of Max Brook's Zombie Survival Guide: it's stone faced serious when it comes to its subject matter and the same applies here. Lastly (or maybe there's more), is the absolute lancing of jazz as an art. I've done some gigging and there are small number of performers that sound like Benjamin. I'll even admit that I've had a few dud improvisations and this is just a professionally and expertly made dud. Lastly lastly (there is more lol), I really enjoy imagining the recording sessions. As a teacher, I truly wonder what's going through his head (ears and hands)! Benjamin must know when he's playing correct notes and then choosing to deliberately miss them. He also has these consistent rhythmic motifs that show up and they're often stylistically pretty solid. I hope that's a thoughtful answer - I don't know that I would put these albums on for others to enjoy. But I find them really funny and getting through an entire album of this kind of dissonance is a journey. Good or bad, not so sure. Just a journey that probably is not for everyone, but one that I'll happily go on! Cheers!
@thenewyearsgrinch2 ай бұрын
@@MisterBadman I mean yes, art is subjective. The older i've gotten. The more purposefully i try not to yuck someones yum. Especially when it comes to art. I guess the qualifier i would like to make. Is Jon Benjamin, Is PURPOSEFULLY trying to make a bad music. And i was genuinely wondering, how a rational person. Would actually listen too it for 30-40 mins. Not simply as an excercise in perseverance. I thought there was a rational answer. And there is. The other dude, answered it pretty well imo. Lol, because im not a coward. Here's some art that has spoken to me over the years. I could have chosen more crit acclaimed stuff. But this was the first stuff that came to mind, and im trying to engage in good faith. Make fun of it if you want. Keep in mind, that's not what i was trying to do with jon benjamin. Guernica: Picasso Brighter than creations dark: the drive-by truckers. The spiciness of the score breaks all previous records and only a true avantguard master can withstand such complexity without immediately searching for ear bleach. TL;DR It's the weave... on piano.
