Comparisons were really interesting. Everything sounded especially harsh against the Q9U except for the Shure MV7/SM7b and (of course) the Neumann. I couldn't believe how similar the sound profiles were between the Q9U and the SM7b. But my biggest takeaway? The MV7 was a touch brighter, has the USB/XLR combo plus a mix control between computer and zero-latency monitoring for an extra $50. I've already ordered the Q9U, but will keep the MV7 in the back of mind while testing for a few weeks.

I've had the Q2U for a few years now and it's great on W10 through USB. There was an issue before the firmware update that became available (in 2019 or 2020 I think) but with the firmware update it's working flawlessly. For a cheap-ish dynamic USB mic for just about any simple voice usage + the ability to move up to a USB interface with XLR support, it's a great buy. The stand I got in the box is pretty dinky though - you may want to invest in something better. And if you're a real gamer who needs pointless gamery things - blinky lights, bright paint jobs, 87 pickup patterns, a condenser for use in your non-treated gamer cave so we can all hear the cars driving by - it's not for you.

Here's a thought - with each mic you review, do the whole "this is the so-and-so and its settings are such-and-such" then export that clip by itself, drop all these clips in a folder or maybe even categorize them and bam, you now have a clip for every mic you have and never have to go through all the trouble of hooking them all up again for these comparisons.

This is a good idea in theory but unfortunately not in practice as there are too many variables that change over time, bandrews intonation and tone would change and develop, the acoustics of the room would change as he gets more or less gear, and a bunch of other things might change like of an interface breaks and he has to start using a different one. Redoing mic tests for each video is definitely the better way of doing it in terms of quality and obvs bandrew thinks that he has enough time to be able to do that

It really shouldn't surprise me anymore but unfortunately, here in late Q1, 2021, I'm still pleasantly surprised when a USB device is built with a USB-C socket, versus micro, mini, or seriously...full size USB-A ports? Being able to use the current "commodity USB cable", versus needing to dig through my cable stash for a compatible cable, when I've lost, ruined, or otherwise can't use the provided cable, is such a relief. Using a USB-C port doesn't require implementing USB3 bandwidth, Thunderbolt capability, USB-PD power (but when relevant, that IS nice), or the other things USB-C provides, but the robustness, lack of "right-side up", and Current Year commonality with other devices sure is appreciated. Even if existing products could be revised to simply replace the port, most folks surely wouldn't mind.
@gyozakeynsianism3 жыл бұрын
I mean, all devices come with the relevant cables, and a simple and cheap adapter will fix any USB compatibility issue. It's because it's not a big deal for most people that companies are slow to switch.

This mic make a kind of bell 🔔 sound, or like an internal piece juggling inside. If you don’t touch the mic no problem. But as soon as I have a little move, here come the bell 😱. For ultimate test, just shake gently the mic with your hand and you’ll hear it clearly. I know we are not suppose to shake a mic during recording but I assume that a mic is not supposed to make that kind of noise.

Update, the monitoring on the microphone itself makes the table touches arm bumps sound way worse than they are, although they are still bad. However, I did attach a $20 shock mount marketed to SM7B users, and that helped tremendously. Vibrations aren't coming through in my recordings, despite hearing them in the built in monitoring.
@KevinGalligan Жыл бұрын
This mic is now listed at $100 in a few places. I assume that makes it much more compelling. I have an SM7B, with cloudlifter. It's great, obviously, but I don't use it much because I don't like having this stuff out all the time. Just ordered the Q9U after watching this video, and seeing the $100 price. That'll also mean a pair of good mics in case I'm doing kind of an interview podcast. I'm mostly doing tech videos, though, so solo.
@tango_gru Жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin..... hows your experience pitching it against SM7B ???
@KevinGalligan Жыл бұрын
@@tango_gru I haven't done side by side with the SM7B, but for my normal use, this thing is great. The SM7B is great, but I had an XLR to USB audio device, a cloud lifter, 2 XLR cables, and the mic itself. As that tended to be frustrating, and the mic would get bumped often in my studio (AKA the bedroom, because I work from home), I'd generally not leave it out for long. Now I just have USBC directly into the laptop. I use it for all of my zoom calls, and because it's dynamic, it does well with getting voice and not too much background. I've done one live podcast with it, but will probably do more soon. If I'm doing a serious recording I'll probably drag the SM7B, but we'll see. I'm not sure I'd really be able to tell the difference blind.

@@KevinGalligan I get your point , sometimes less is more . I am currently using Elgato Wave 3 and it gives me decent results for my work (Some guided video tutorials ) I do think that Podcastage is not fair to the Samson Q9U towards the end of video as it does a fairly good job for Podcasts. The only people who wouldnt like this are who fidget a lot and keep bumping into the Microphone or keep adjusting it or else if they are using XLR and USB at the same time. I dont think Samson people designed both interfaces to be used at the same time (that actually sounds silly to me). The entire Setup for SM7B is a pain to deal with (Cost and space). I am Shure that there is better technology that doesnt need a Cloudlifter in the middle. Plus the Noise reduction filter on Camtasia work pretty well for post processing ;) I am not buying a Shure SM7B unless it costs $200 and the Cloud lifter costs $100. Might buy an old one... but such old Technology doesnt deserve this much of money. A bit of a Rant but I had to say it.

This mic seems a bit niche for me. Worse than the MV7, as a fairly direct competitor. Smoother than the Q2U, but also a little bit muddier on the flat settings. With the HPF and/or mid boost, though, it sounds pretty good. Either way, I'm not convinced that it's better than a budget interface and a Podmic or even one of the plethora of USB condensers out there like the Wave 3 (unless you really need a dynamic). Maybe if you really need both USB and XLR, but at that point I think the MV7 is just plain better if you can swing the extra $50.

If you forced me to choose between the Q9u and Wave 3, I think I'd go for the Q9u because I like that slightly darker sound and it's smoother which is easier to mess with. Personally I like the form factor and sound of the Q2U, considering it has 0 switches makes it easier to EQ IMHO. I would love to see a version of Q2U from Shure using the 58/Beta 58A body. As for the form factor I dislike any mic that has a mount attached to the body, it picks up too much noise and you cannot, easily, put it on a shock mount. Personally I like streamline mic sizes over the broadcast-esk mics, on video big mics seem more like 'Hey look at me' kind of thing.

I am 99.99% sure she does not, but a guy can hope.

Thanks for your honest review. I want a plug and play USB mic for KZbin videos. Do you recommend me to buy Q2U? Does it work fine in Windows 10 via USB? Does it have any driver or other issue?

arg! I'm torn between the Q9u at $150 and the mv7x at $150. For voice over work on youtube videos.. Mostly untreated apartment dining/ living room area. I have a scarlett solo interface.. I just have no clue what would work best for me. I've tried several in the 100 and lower range.. Nothing works well with my goofy voice :[

Sorry to bump this a year later but I'm currently debating between exactly these two and I also think my voice sounds goofy lol. What did you end up getting and how happy are you with it?
