The capsule with holes in the back probably has the cardioid pattern. The reason is, that sound waves from behind the microphone get bent into the front side of the capsule. So the backside holes allow for destructive interference between sound waves directly coming from the back into the holes and sound waves bent around the capsule to the front side. For example, both sides of the capsule experience a sound wave peak, so they cancel each other out. With this method the directional behaviour (cardioid pattern in this case) of the microphone is achieved.

Metalhead777 Your right... only sound-pressure receiver are by definition omni directional... Sound speed receiver are cardoid (with holes in the back).

I've had one of these for years. It is great for teleconferencing. Users on the other end really appreciate the audio quality, and having the omni switch is great when I have someone in my office also participating in the call. The headphone jack makes it possible to have a more private call - in an airport or coffee shop, for example.

Nice little mic, great for VoIP and carrying on the go. I wish the stand could clamp onto thicker objects though.
@hanesvettori46587 жыл бұрын
The reason for second capsule could have to do with the Omni mode... the top Capsule looks like a electret one ("permanently" polarised). I guess they are by definition not omni...
@EEVblog27 жыл бұрын
Yes, one is omni the other is cardioid

Hanes vettori I would assume two mics are for better frequency response.... :/
@juweinert7 жыл бұрын
Nope. It's simple to build a TINY microphone with a huge frequency response (look at your phone!) but it's fairly hard to produce a capsule that could be electronically changing it's pattern! You may use different capsule for better frequency coverage in professional studio recordings, but there we tend to use different sized capsules
@bbreeuwer45777 жыл бұрын
They are both electrets. Electret capsule can be omni, cardiod (or uni-polar), dipole etc. They are obviously for creating a certain beam pattern. Basically every device that is this little has just little electrets inside.

you can sum analog signals still using an opamp in 2017! no DSP needed... I was actually expecting two capsules back to back when you showed the omni-cardio switch, where you would either add or subtract the signals in order to modify the characteristics...

Although it is suspended in rubber this thing does pick up annoying amounts of hum when clipped to a laptop. With a little separate table stand and a pop filter it works brilliant. Lovely teardown Dave!

them electret condenser inserts are cheap as its the enclosure design & supporting electronics that sets the microphone characteristics. most electret condenser inserts have good frequency response upto 20k. some go a bit higher.

Two capsules are used so you change from omni to cardioid .... one capsule is omni and the other cardioid and it just switches capsules .... Electret capsules are so cheap that this is the easiest way to get the job done. A cardioid electret will have some way for sound 9or sound pressure) to enter the back of the capsule to create your 180 degree signal 'mechanically' get your cancelling so I'd say the top is your cardioid and the bottom capsule is the omni

I got a logitech guitar hero usb microphone from the salvation army for $2. The wire was broken, but by movement the break was under the hold it part. I cut it and soldered it on. All is fine but the SNR of the DAC sucks and I almost wish I just soldered on a microphone cable to my sound card instead. So now I don't know what to do really.

trouble is that if you don't edit then you are left as clueless as the rest of us ! I stole the following text from the web re: the two capsules: How Multi-Pattern Mics Work Rather than requiring a separate mic for every job…engineers came up with an ingenious idea to cram a TON of versatility into just one mic. They realized that…simply by varying the output from two back-to-back cardioid capsules, you could recreate virtually any polar pattern imaginable. For example: By combining both cardioid signals, you get an omnidirectional pattern. By combining both but reversing the polarity of one, you get a figure 8 pattern. By turning off one, and using the other, you get a cardioid pattern. credit to: ehomerecordingstudio dot com
@uwezimmermann54277 жыл бұрын
That was exactly what I expected to see - but that's obviously not the case here, where one capsule has the one characteristic and the other one the other...
