For a loco make from scratch I’d say this is an excellent attempt at an accurate representation of Coppernob! Quality issues aside, the decals are really a minor thing in the grand scheme of things. Very wonderful little model, would love to see more obscure Victorian locomotives in OO Gauge!

I have such fond memories of Coppernob, albeit in a dark part of the station hall instead of the great hall. I loved how it was surrounded by flags, banners and always appealed to me. Hopefully one day they’ll move her back. I wish I could own a model of Old Coppernob, but I’m guessing you’re the only genius who had the idea of one in OO scale. It looks really good, and the livery is a very good representation of Furness Railway red (given that so few FR locos even even have models).

I have been plastic modelling for a number of years now and have a lot of experience with decals and would like to offer some advice Firstly for decals you need to make sure they are going onto a glossy surface. Easiest way to do this is with a gloss varnish which also prevents paint damage. Second thing having a good decal solution is very important too to soften the decal and make it stick to the surface better to help it look painted on. Third if the decal isn't doing what you want it to do, simply add water to the decal which will make it slide over the surface better to help you get it lined up then when you get it where you want it you can use a cotton bud or paper towel to dab off the excess water. Then when the decals are dry varnish over them again to protect them and unify with the surface. If you are more advanced you can use fine grit sand paper to take off the top layers of the varnish over the decals so that you don't get that step where the backing paper of the decal is. I really hope this helps someone who is new to modelmaking. I was very nervous and panicked over decals when starting out but you eventually get used to them. If you panic just add water!

@@SamsTrains The lack of water will certainly have caused your problems. I also think the surface wasn't quite glossy enough because I can see some evidence of silvering. May I suggest using AK gauzy agent airbrush varnish, it's what I use and works brilliantly

Wonderful Sam! A tip I've found with spaceship modelling. Use metal leaf for shinny metal parts. Gold, copper, brass and silver metal leaf is cheaply available, then using the special adhesive (and following the instructions) it would be pretty straightforward to make Coppernob's boiler look bright and shinny with REAL copper-leaf coating.

I've done quite a bit of model railroad building, mostly kits at various levels of difficulty, but also "kitbashing" where kits are treated as raw materials for your own designs and some scratchbuilding, too. I've noted that as the model approaches completion my stress level goes up, especially at the final stages of painting and lettering for just the reason you cited--one bad move can ruin hours and hours of work. You are not alone, Sam! But it's worth it when you are happy with the final result, even if a few warts are showing, as you also state. So congratulations on your latest loco and know that so many folks are grateful for the sharing of your efforts. Cheers from Wisconsin!

Just wow. Like there's something about era 1 locomotives for me which makes them my favourite from the early days of rail transportation. I don't know if calling this locomotive "cute" is the right word, but that's what it is for me: small, unique and looks quite amazing. You get better every time with every project. Applause from me. Sadly I don't have a 3d printer so I can't make this model myself for me but one day I will. One final word though don't be too hard to yourself on the decals it's quite challanging for me as well as a model kit builder but from any distance I'm certain this locomotive would look amazing on a convention it's absolutely brilliant. Excellent work Sam! It’s very special to see you reviewing a train that you’ve built with your own hands. Beautiful craftsmanship. And, for 30 quid at that! Model railway manufacturers ought put that in their pipe and smoke it. The absolute top of the line locomotives, DCC and everything, should really be more than $50 or $60 USD. Hopefully, one day, we’ll see the prices in model railroading go back to the way they were in the 1940’s and 50’s relative to other items.

I don't know if you've got an Union Mills N gauge models in your collection Sam, but simplicity is the aim of their game too and that's why they are among the best runners in the scale and not even very expensive. Simple and elegant mechanism always runs well. I do hope you give resin printing a try soon, so you can do more fine details as well as figures etc, it would be really fun!

Brilliantly done, Sam! For weight, especially for your smaller 3D printed locos, have you considered looking into tungsten weights? IIRC you’ve been using those rectangular steel wheel weights, and tungsten should be about 2.5 times as dense as that. Plus I think they sell it in putty form too if you want to fill every nook and cranny with weight. The big downside is that it’s much more expensive, but I figured I may as well make the suggestion anyway.

If you ever visit Ireland another of Bury, Curtis and Kennedy's engines is on display in Cork City's Kent Station. GS&WR Engine No.36 was built in 1847 and operated until 1874. It is a 2-2-2 configuration and has a copper cladded dome firebox similar to Old Coppernob's

Got my dapol western today and I said I'll give some feedback: 1) got from rails of Sheffield for £130 including postage and came very well packaged. 2) bottom of the bogies were a bit oily but nothing a cotton bud couldn't fix. 3) didn't derail on my outer layout but would hit the power connecter rail block, so I moved the power rail to a different position and put in a replacement piece but then it started to derail. 4) moved it to middle line and doesn't derail but can only run one way round as it also hits the power connecter block. 5) bit noisy but other than that its an alright model, I'm going to keep an eye on it though as its my first dapol loco and I'm still not 100% convinced.

Well done! Looks really good. Doing the detailing decoration work is something, were you need to take your time. Be in the right fframe of mind to do it, nice quiet working conditions. And if getting stressed out at all, STOP! and take some time out. Even if you come back to it the next day, is better then things going badly wrong! I think its really good. Some things look over scale splashes and coupling rods. From a distance the finer details will blend in and it will certainly be a great addition to any layout or heritage model railway.

Looks great! You should consider investing in a mini-mill or mini-lathe. They are great for turning your own wheels, making your own gears, or making basically anything you can think of out of metal or certain plastics. Very precise too. I own a Sherline mill and it is great

I've tinkered with CAD to produce a small slot car chassis and I know the level of skill required to produce something of such detail as Old Coppernob. It's a lot! That looks great! I think the trouble you had with the decoration and detail shows why ready to run models from big name manufacturers (such as Dapol or Hornby) are so expensive. It takes skill and time to get that stuff right, from base design to final assembly and painting. Scaletrains did a fantastic video on the process which is very eye opening. Again, you did a great job with it, and I look forward to your next project!

Fabulous loco Sam, if the firebox was actual copper then that would of just topped it off. Don't be too disheartened about the lining as I was concerned about the complexity of the livery but you managed to captivate it quite well. You can't see the wonky lining on the back of the tender if its got rolling stock so that doesn't matter. Its certainly better than the lining I do in g gauge and thats goodness knows how many times the size. ❤

That is a very beautiful model, especially considering the amount of work that went into creating it. I mostly model in S scale (1:64) and I've built many things from scratch just using raw materials. Granted a lot of what I build is done by hand as I don't own a 3D printer, but it's still the most rewarding when you make something yourself. If you ever get the chance, you'll have to take this model back to the NRM and get a photo of it with the real life engine. Good job, Sam and I look forward to your next project.

It's been really amazing watch your 3D printed engines going from just a simple model design to what looks like full blown production models. I know you think the details arent perfect but to me they pass the good old 10 foot eye test. Meaning so long as it looks good it passes in my books. With all your work improving on your 3D printed models maybe now you could tackle other country locomotives to fill out your ranks. For example American locos, European locos, etc... The sky is no longer the limit when it comes to future 3D models. And with bigger models you could certainly put in metal weights to offset the light weight of the plastic. Heck maybe I Scale Models are a possibility Hmmmm very ambitious indeed. Amazing job as always and I look forward to future videos.

Congratulations Sam, Old Copperknob looks really good, you should be justifiably proud of the result. When putting on the lining decals it is best to look along their length to check for straightness. Keep them moist and make adjustments with a cocktail stick until you are happy with the positioning, then soak up the excess liquid with a cotton bud.

Oh yes, finally! We've been waiting for this one. She is definitely resembling a step up of your skills again Sam..., as well as the patience required.... Some just fall apart quickly, some fold/buckle too easily. However, the decal thingy is negligible. Generally speaking, she really POPS being gorgeously pleasing to the eye. All started from scratch and this is a brilliant achievement. A pat on the back is more than well deserved.

Sam, consider buying a vinyl cutting machine and making precisely cut masks to paint lining/trim. Actually, you could create workable masks with just masking tap or vinyl cut by hand for many things but the fine lining like on your loco's tender might be hard to cut by hand

Looks very good Sam. Would it be worth getting a small Resin printer for producing smaller fine details? If you want a suggestion for your next project, how about an interior for your O gauge brake van?

You could try to put on a clear coat on top of the model before you apply the decals. I heared that it also helps for them to better go onto the model.

For the shrapnel markings; perhaps some additional detailing like printed stickers could work! Just a thought; I know that alone could be a lot of work, but perhaps less so than painting them on.

A very good model Sam, very well done! It will soon be time to reset at least one area of the hobby back to where it used to be so I look forward to buying affordable good quality models under the Sams trains brand in a shop in 5 years time! 😃

That's beautiful, Sam - don't sell yourself short. Only further thing I'd do, is give it a crew - a couple of blokes from the Dapol workmen set would be perfect. A couple of coats of spray clear coat on the decals should stop them breaking, and decal setting solution when applying will ensure they lay flat.
