Heljan took Sam's review of the LNER tango, scrutinized over it. Thought long and hard and eventually, after long long hours of sweat and determination they achieved what nobody else thought possible. Some called them crazy but they did it. Honestly, this would be a great loco to weather. A bit of dirt and rust would hide and/or compliment some of its blemishes quite well. You could even do it up as an engine that's being sent for scrap. Then put in another consist like its being pulled, that would hide how fast this loco needs to go to not die on points.

Excellent review Sam. I bought one of these at Model Rail Scotland last weekend and returned it the next day. The finish was terrible and after running in gently for 20 minutes the motor burned out. Just this past week I added a Heljan 1361 Class to my model RR. I am located in the Fox River Valley, Wisconsin, USA, and bought my 1304 GWR 0-6-0ST, no. 1363 in BR Black from 'Rails of Sheffield'. (99 quid). My engine is quite different from your review. Parts fitting and paint was pristine and flawless. It is a good and quiet runner. For motor access I believe if you take off the cab and the front boiler, the saddle tank slides either to the front or back to access the motor. I added DCC and sound with a Zimo MX648F Sound decoder. Works wonderful with all sounds and a super slow crawl (there is a function to run the engine at 1/2 speed). I would rate this engine 8.5-8.8 range.

My pleasure Mark, thanks so much! Yes there may have been - I removed all the screws I could see though! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@dekhrahahoon4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam, I have the pannier tank version of this one, with the same mechanism. I discovered as you did that the baseplates have no "give" at all. I inserted thin plastic film so I could tighten the screws. But then I discovered that one of the front screws is not in the correct place, and when inserted, causes the baseplate to twist. One has to widen the hole in the baseplate for that screw so it doesn't get twisted, as that jams the mechanism even if it feels OK. After fixing that and very carefully adjusting each power pickup, it became a good runner with lots of hauling power. The coupling mountings are the correct height, but with so much slack that the coupling dangles, and then to make matters worse the coupling 'stalk' has a downstep in it! The coupling passes entirely below a correctly fitted coupling on another vehicle. You have to put in quite a bit of effort to remove all slack and then replace the bit of tat they call a coupling with a proper one. After all that, it works well. But it should have done that out of the box. And mine at least has wonderful sound - smooth and high quality. I get the feeling they have wonderful modellers making the basic visual design, but slovenly, incompetent implementation and production. When the first prototype came out, they should have fixed the baseplates and couplings before ordering mass production.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a good fix - great idea there, shame it's necessary though! I'd agree with that whole heartedly - the implementation was a joke!! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@drosera884 жыл бұрын
Wow. Those rear windows are killing me. I thought maybe they were supposed to be some sort of corrugated glass/plastic but looking up pictures of the real loco (and much better scratch builds and kit builds other modelers have made) shows Heljan was trying to simulate metal bars across the windows! Definitely unacceptable for a model that costs over $200 USD, even if it is just a small engine. Also, that middle axle looks bent since one of the wheels clearly wobbles when you were running it upside down.
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Ooh really?! That's awful then, what were they thinking?! :O Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@steamandsmoke974 жыл бұрын
Allan Straight Link Valve Gear is basically a combination of Stephenson and Gooch, though the expansion link is not curved like Stephenson, hence "Straight Link". To reduce cutoff or change the engine's direction, not only the position of said link is raised or lowered (a la Stephenson), but also the valve rod which now becomes a quasi-radius rod of sorts (like Gooch or Walschaerts). This is accomplished by dual lifting links that are attached to a "Double Bell Crank" which sort of resembles a see-saw. When the link goes up, the radius rod goes down, and vice versa.

Watching this video again reminds me of something, there are models out there that are objectively being treated worse than this, if you're a hardcore Thomas fan, you'll know what I'm talking about, if you don't, I'll explain. There's a theme park somewhere in the UK called Drayton manor Thomas land, it's essentially a theme park for Thomas the tank engine, in that park, there is an exhibit called; "Discover Thomas and Friends" Basically, what it is, it's a shed that displays some the props from the TV show that they used in seasons 1-12. (Yes they used custom-made Gauge 1 model trains for a TV show. Mindblowing huh?) Anyway, getting back to my original point, the props being displayed at Drayton manor... Are treated WORSE than the Heljan 1361 class you showed in this video sam. If you want proof to show I'm not lying, here is said proof; kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXekgXWQlJZnjKc What's worse is that these are models that are custom made, they are one-of-a-kind models, they should NOT be treated in such a shoddy state! They were not designed to sit in a shed with natural light and no temperature control. I imagine the recent warmer weather over there in the UK hasn’t helped. I'll stop ranting about this now because you probably get the point by now... I hope. So yeah, I've seen worse model trains than that green 1361 class, Sam.

I fully agree. Mine was just as bad. I got mine a couple of years ago and the body was covered in scratches and marks. And to access the motor you have to bend the water tank around the sides of the weight.

Thank god for the DJM 1361 (not something you would expect to hear). When you said that you apologized if your tone was obnoxious I was dying of laughter, as to be quite honest the quality of the model is the most obnoxious thing I’ve ever seen in my life! I would not touch this thing with a thirty-nine and a half foot pole, and I can’t believe that you did not return this for a refund. I’ve seen bad models in my life, but nothing as horrid as this. Thank goodness Heljan have been starting to learn from their mistakes, (ie: GWR Railcar, ES-1 Electric, etc.) But with lemons like this model, the Class 17 and the Tango, I wonder some days how Heljan stay in business. Great review Sam, and keep up the good work!

Sam. Re:- My previous comments on the 1361. I was looking at them on the "Rails of Sheffield" website. They were selling them for £79:50p and I particularly like the 1370, Pannier Tank version so I chanced it and ordered one. It came today and it is perfect. No damage or glue marks and it creeps along very slowly straight out of the box, tested on my short straight test track. The sprung buffers work perfectly as well. I just thought you might be interested to hear of this. Sorry if it depresses you lol. Regards, Alan.

Well it's a Heljan, not having round wheels is a thing there... As is leaving a trail of parts. Locomotives with unpainted wheel centers do exist, like the Swiss 01 202. Also some DB class 23's did at some point in time have blank wheel centers.

Sam is such a reasonable guy, I can tell this really let him down. I actually bought my first British loco because of him, and his review steered me in the right direction for what to get based on quality and price. Between you and me, as a kid I would've still loved that model. It's just a shame that the price is so bad. It'd be a cool starter model, maybe.

Like many modern models looks good in places , runs ok but is too expensive for what it is. Servicing is hard or impossible. Can you imagine it in 20 years time ! I can service my Hornby pannier from 1973 which still runs well but this would end up just on display.

Fun fact: Percy's design from The Railway Series books does not resemble any real locomotive but he was originally supposed to be based on a GWR 1361 look-alike. In the end, he was based on a GWR no.1340 Trojan as the Rev Awdry wanted him to be from the very start. The Reverend stated that Percy probably begun as one of these saddle tank engines and was extensively rebuilt which is why he doesn't resemble any real loco design. His TV show model ended up being based on the GWR 1361

1:25 It's also £100 more expensive than the Spanish locomotive. Edit: The gap around the dome combined with the colour makes it looks like they glued a toy soldier's hat on. Edit2: I have a Hornby Railroad tank engine that doesn't stop on every point and runs relatively well despite the layout I run it on being dirty sometimes (it's not my personal layout).
