Daisy was hard to please. She shuddered at Sam's engine shed. "This is dreadfully smelly!" she announced. "I'm highly sprung and anything smelly is bad for my swerves!" Sam put her in one of the open air sidings. "This is better," mused Daisy, "but whatever is that rubbish?" The 'rubbish' turned out to be Annie, Clarabel and Henrietta, who were most offended. "We won't stay here to be insulted!" they fumed. Sam had to remove them and spent half the night soothing their hurt feelings. Next morning, Sam coupled a Milk Tank to Daisy. The rebellious railcar blew a fuse. "Pulling is bad for my swerves!" she argued. Sam sighed, uncoupled her and she purred away more happily. "I'll do just what work I chose and no more." She said it to herself.

I'm with you about the show Sam, I grew up with Thomas and Friends and I always loved watching the real models chuffing around Sodor. Having the real models there made it feel so realistic, with the coal and the way the engines just moved, it was so interesting and it made me want to get models for myself. I was slightly saddened when they changed to the 3d animated version cause it took away from the realism, and now the atrocity of 2d just completely downgraded what was one of my favourite shows of all time. I do hope they bring back models sometime in the future but, I find that very unlikely. Great video as always though Sam, keep it up!

Daisy would often haul a milk tanker or two in the mornings so that Thomas wouldn’t have to make an extra trip, as I’m pretty sure Thomas and Daisy alternated. Daisy would take passengers one way, from Ffarquhar to the Terminus, and Thomas, Annie and Clarabel would go the other way from Tidmouth (which is the Terminus in the books rather than Knapford) back down to Ffarquhar, and vice versa. Whoever ended the day at Ffarquhar would take the morning train to Tidmouth the next day, and vice versa. When Daisy left for Ffarquhar in the morning she would bring milk for the people of the branch line. Other than that Daisy wouldn’t pull anything (except for the one time in cgi when she pulled Annie and Clarabel), without huge complaints. Sorry for the waffle, I just admire the realism of the series lol

One thing to keep in mind is that the engineering plastic used in the bogies is quite slippery already, and a tiny drop of light, plastic-safe oil will help these roll with very little friction between the plastic and the steel axle. If the bogies were cast metal, then bearings would certainly be required, though. A small amount of plastic-safe grease on the gears will help, and remember to put some on the “eye” mechanism (gears) too, once you’ve got the body shell off.

Decent review there Sam it looks like a really good model, one thing I find odd with daisy is the description for her real life basis, many sources say that her basis is a class 101 I think but that to me is weird because a class 101 is either a 2 or 3 car DMU, a better one would be a class 121 as that is a single car unit, I have seen a lot of people don’t like that reboot series and to be honest it doesn’t look good to me either.

Thanks David - yeah they did a pretty good job! Yes that is weird - I guess she doesn't particularly look like 101 either! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

I'm pretty sure Awdry said she was a heavily modified 101 with a cab at either end. Either that or he said she was an experimental 101 I forget
@davidstrains49102 жыл бұрын
@@BrokenIET looking at the fandom wiki it states she is a class 101/102 DMU but is only a single car unit instead of the traditional two to four piece units, looking at the model and a class 101 there are features on both that match for example the windows on daisy and the 101 match each other, it is just weird to me because the 101 and 102s were never single units and I think it is unlikely that a prototype version of those units would be single cars, good explanation though.

Great review on the Bachmann Daisy, Sam. I might consider picking up one of these down the road myself. Have to agree with you on the interior though, at least. What I really like about Daisy is that it seems to be way more modification friendly should someone want to add DCC. The extended body means that there’s more room to add a large decoder and even a capacitor and/or a speaker. Which can be difficult to do on the smaller models due to the eye mechanisms.

Well I have to say I'm impressed by this one's performance. Gordon better watch or she might steal his express next. As for Daisy's unusual difference from a Class 101 apparently Daisy was built to run specifically on Thomas' branch line which explains the fictious but plausible scenario of her being built as a rail car. That seems to suggest the Fat Controller had planned to get her even before Thomas had his accident to assist with work on the Branch as it seems unlikely they could just ready a whole new engine in so short a time. She's probably one of the few engines to have no history of running services in the UK before coming to Sodor.

For all of the US viewers that 0.34 newtons of pulling power translates to 1.20 ounces of drawbar force which if equivalent to 15 or so 40 foot American boxcars. This is pretty normal pulling power for most of the larger engines of the Thomas and Friends range. I'm glad you did a review of Daisy as I was all headed up to buy one buy halted at the silver windows. I might still get her but at her price I could buy other Thomas characters though I'd probably have all of them but now. Either way too notch review. Also one more thing in the US dub they refer to her as Daisy the Diesel Rail Car which over here in the States we had what was called the RDC: Rail Diesel Car and was essentially one powered coach that could either couple up to other coaches and pull them or can be used as a coach itself. Since Daisy doesn't have a second unit attached I always felt Diesel Rail Car made more sense in that context. Just some fun facts for you today.

As someone who’s got the entire Bachmann Thomas and Friends range, Daisy is one of the best overall in the range. I do agree I wish it was easier to fit a DCC Decoder into her as here in the US, I know very few people who don’t run DCC anymore. On DCC she’s even smoother although that could be thanks to the decoder brand I installed. Again, overall the best us Thomas fans have ever gotten from Bachmann.

Your reviews are so superior to all others . I have a Daisy I just got and I think it runs better than all the rest of the Thomas and friends series. A couple interesting US/UK differences surface here. "Break in" is American for "run in" - when you have a new model, car, pair of shoes etc. and you use it a bit specifically to get ready for normal use. US models these days at least generally don't use truck/bogie-mounted couplers. Realism is probably the biggest reason (keeping in mind that knuckle couplers look and function more or less like the real thing, if slightly overscale); you have to carve a pretty big area out of the front and back of the locomotive to accommodate truck-mounted couplers and it doesn't look great. I think there's a performance benefit too, at least on light freight cars being pushed instead of pulled derailing less. Interesting to see this intersect with UK style couplers and something indirectly based on a UK prototype though. Personally I think my Daisy runs a bit faster than I'd like.

I believe the entirety of what Daisy has ever pulled includes: 1 Milk Van (Books), 1 Milk Tanker (Model TV), Annie and Clarabel (CGI TV) I'm fairly certain that's it. So while her coupling mounts are kind of eh, 90% of runs will not have her pulling a thing. The grey windows? I initially didn't like them. But, given the mechanism, even taking out the eyes, I'd rather have the better runner. The moving eyes is still a nice plus, but I wouldn't have minded it they were missing. Price wise, maybe I'm used to the "Thomas Tax", but to me she seems okay price range at $100 from TrainWorld, even compared to regular American locos. Cheaper's always better, but I think, given she's nicely detailed and the motor's excellent, I'd be willing to say 4.5/5 for price. I'm very happy with mine and would say she up there as one of Bachmann Thomas' best (Donald/Douglas and Duck are very high up there too). Daisy never pulled any wagons on the show outside of almost taking 1 milk tanker in her debut episode and Annie and Clarabel in a CGI episode, in the books she took the milk regularly and I think sometimes takes Annie and Clarabel if more passengers are expected, but that's it, she's not truly meant to be a hauler overall due to the nature of her basis. Fun Fact: One of the biggest Thomas toylines "Trackmaster" have never released her due to her not pulling any wagons, and as every other trackmaster engine is given wagons to pull for extra value, they are unsure whether or not to give her wagons or release her as a standalone.

@tiddles4x42 жыл бұрын
The reason for the choice of the Class 101 is simple. The "original" model built by Rev W Awdry was based on the only DMU model avalable at the time. That being the Triang Class 101 DMU, it came in a two car or three car set. He simply cut the cab off one car and fixed it to the other. Turning a two car unit in to a one car unit. Most of the home made models of Daisy, including mine are done that way. As the now 60 year old model is avalable very cheap, only a few pounds. Some have done it with the LIMA/Hornby Class 121 but that is too long and requires a lot of work. Mine is a Triang body on a shortened LIMA Class 121 chassis and fitted with a 8 pin DCC plug. I do find it strange that this model is not DCC ready when the other models in the range now are all DCC ready. The chassis looks to be based one the Underground Ernie trains but they are all 8 pin DCC ready.

Love your take on the Thomas reboot. I'm also not very pleased with the direction the show went.

Wouldn't Daisy technically be a DSU, Diesel Single Unit. Also, I saw you on the Hornby show, your experiment was good fun. (More of a joke) Daisy shouldn't have couplers because she is highly sprung and right up to date and should never never pull, and pulling is bad for her swerves.

at 24:57 For Arry and Bert is the motor removed to make it free wheeling or just a gear removed? I run mainly HO 3 rail and was thinking of getting some scrap Bachmann Thomas & Friends locos and having them free wheel lol

Daisy, Daisy Give me your answer, do! P.S. I agree with your opinion on AEG. It hurts that Mattel changed the series like that :( I really wish they didn't do that to Thomas.

Could you do a video where you figure out how to give a model train a face and controllable eyes? I want to make films in the style of the old Thomas and Friends, but I cannot find sufficient documentation of HOW they made the eyes move other than “They used servos and a joystick.” I also think that it would make an interesting video.
