I work for the Baltimore and Ohio Museum in Baltimore, MD. I spoke with our archivist at the B&O and she said that Bachmann actually visited our archives (we get a lot of requests from model railroaders). We don’t actually know the exact color of blue on 19th Century B&O 4-4-0s or the rest of our historic locomotives for that matter. I am almost certain, however, that it wasn’t this bright shade of blue. The 19th century B&O locomotives we have at the museum are mostly painted black, with the exception of the green William Mason 4-4-0 we have. There was a B&O 703 4-4-0, but it didn’t look like this. I believe this is a generic 4-4-0 model. Another exception were the 1920s President class of P7s which were painted green, one which we are currently cosmetically restoring at the B&O museum.

Thank you for the clarification, since we've (me and my other half) had our doubts about the application of the blue colour in the sense of going into direction of being unlikely. However, as some form of fantasy the colour does work out quite well actually. Perhaps the shine is a bit much but overall rather beautifully popping.

Yeah, and I’m pretty sure knuckle couplers hadn’t been invented yet when the 4-4-0 was first introduced to American rails. I think they were some sort of link-and-pin couplings. That being said, this is a nice - if inaccurate - livery on this model. Quite catching!

That engine is from the Sandusky Mansfield & Newark Railroad when it was acquired by the B&O in 1869. Also correct about the black paint. Pigtown residents would steal paint from the tender kitchen for their homes… An old-timer shared that tidbit with me when I worked there in the 80s.

If you can get your hands on one, the Bachmann Spectrum 4-4-0 is an absolutely wonderful model, blows this guy out of the water. It was easily my favorite steam engine to run. The sound was top notch too. Truly a big things come in small packages type locomotive.

Interesting seeing an American steamer, and a most equitable review Sam. Her colour is quite the beautiful popping one too. Of course the MSRP is hardly ever what they actually sell for, but what you paid is a very well good bargain. All things pointed out by you are spot on. The CV of the cuffing can be changed we presume but the prototypical speed of the loco was perhaps not the fastest anyway. In the UK and EU we are used to sockets for the decoder. It should be a universal practice, and doesn't cost the world actually. However, we are not very much into sound DCC. The reason being that sounds are quite often more annoying than anything else. The scale and acoustics just do not match at all, putting us off pronto. Recurring play value usually isn't all that much either. Fair good well review and an interesting model. Cheerio.

Thanks for this interesting video. Re the speed the original would have achieved in normal service, I'd expect it to have been used on express passenger trains in the late 1800s - probably reaching at least 60mph on the better stretches of line. The T9 Greyhounds reached 85mph in the 1890s in the UK. The B&O was quite a large, important railway, and had serious competitors, so speed would have been a consideration. I'm not an expert on US railways, but judging by some of the railroad songs which America is known for, 90 and 100 mph seem to have been happening by the 1920s/30s when the songs were first recorded.

Hello Sam, how are you? I thought that Bachmann improved the revision of this locomotive a lot, the engine in the tender and the transmission shaft entering the cabin were very bad aesthetically, in addition to the closed cabin. However, with the technology we have today to make excellent and small engines, the cabin did not need to be sacrificed and better details added, or at least allow the modeler to do so. Another interesting subject that I would like to comment on is that the contact on the tender is made up of three blades that touch each axis of the wheelset (in general, the newer Bachmann steam locomotives are like this), if you change the configuration by making one of these blades are below the axis and the others above (as if it were scissors), energy capture improves considerably. The Bachmann 4-4-0 American tender engine is a pretty decent looking model. It does not have all of the fancy features like other high-spec models have but it is a pretty good budget model Sam.

He was a character that appeared once in one of the specials, and Bachmann have said that the only reason they’re making him is because of his 4-4-0 basis and the fact that they’ve already got the tooling on hand to do that. Regarding the coloring: I have a book on the B&O with color photos of passenger steam showing them in a very dark blue (obviously at a much later point in time, admittedly). The coloring IS pretty close to the streamlined locomotives and passenger cars. I also have a 1993 Bachmann catalogue (which I would unfortunately have to dig up again to double-check), but it had a "Royal Blue" set in G-scale that had either an American or a Ten-Wheeler at the head end, in almost exactly this shade. The "Royal Blue Line" was the marketing term for the B&O's route north from Washington through Baltimore and Philadelphia to Jersey City, across the Hudson River from Manhattan. It was one of their most premier services, in direct competition with the Pennsylvania Railroad (which owned what is now the Northeast Corridor). The Royal Blue was also the name of the streamliner that the B&O inaugurated in the 1930s-one of the first in the world. Given that the Union Pacific started its Armour Yellow with its first streamliner, the M-10000, as a tribute to the coloring of its coaches in the 19th Century, I would not be surprised to know that the coloring of the Royal Blue streamliner was directly derived from the 19th Century coloring of the Royal Blue Line trains, which is what this would be depicting.

So specifically the 52703 yeah it's basically sold out/discontinued just about everywhere, you can still find a lot of the other color schemes though, just gotta accept the fact that these things are in fact made in limited quantities and when they're out, they're out... and the secondary market, or stores that don't give massive discounts to the "MSRP" are they only places to get them.

It's good to see they've made some major improvements on this one, but I think I'm going to hold off on getting one for myself for now. Am I right that they put the traction tires on the front drivers? That seems like an odd choice from an available electrical pickup area perspective, considering it shortens your effective wheelbase. I'd have put them on the back wheels. Too bad swapping them would be a tremendous pain. For sure let us know if you end up finding a good pickup improvement concept.

Hey Sam...the average speed of these mid 19th century 4-4-0 locomotives would only be between 35-45 mph depending upon terrain. So they were indeed not speed demons and your assessment as to why the sound is terrible beyond speed step 8 is correct ...for scale running these locomotives shouldn't be moving very fast! 🤗

Bachmann 4-4-0s Have been around since they 1st started HO and they are great runners Mine runs superb has all wheel pickup And can run super duper slowly Love how you finally reviewed it. I have 6 working examples of the old tooling and 1 of the new tooling Oh and the smokestack usually is not already on the locomotive you usually have to fit it yourself All locomotives come this way

I think it is the "William Mason": 4-4-0 locomotive with a straight stack. Sometimes they had straight stacks. Livery colors, I don't know if those are prototype.

Actually the light cutting off and then not coming back its an NCE issue, not a decoder issue. Other system keep on sending DCC packets to the decoder even when not changing anything on the throttle. The NCE does not. That is one thing I never liked about it. Also, you need to adjust the speed curve to adjust the crawling and also the top speed. Bachmann (and they are not the only one) does not do any programming. Excellent review as always. Cheers!

I’d love to see you review the Walthers EMD F7 in the Baltimore and Ohio colors. I think you’d really dig the paint scheme and the locomotive. It’s also only around $200 with DCC with it being even cheaper with DC at $150 and yet it’s CRAZY detailed. Also big fan of the B&O it’s great to see it pop up in your reviews!

I really love it. The blue looks amazing and for the price, I'd say it's worth it. I will have a look if my model shop can find one for me. My old Jupiter still runs great after I let my friend service it, but this new tooling looks great. The sound is a shame, but maybe if I fine-tune it, it will be a bit better. Great review, Sam. I believe the prototype for this model (as close to it as possible) is the UP 119. It is one of the most famous 4-4-0's (one of the golden spike locos). The locomotive was built by Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works of Paterson, New Jersey in 1868, along with numbers 116, 117, 118 and 120. The original was scrapped in 1903, but a replica now operates at the Golden Spike National Historical Park. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Pacific_No._119 The headlight looks good, in those years it was an oil or acetylene flame, so very orange. Electric filaments were not strong enough until after the 1910's.

Very beautiful to see this engine in HO scale, I got the same loco with same liverey in a bachmann N gauge set. If you can find Bachmanns Royal Blue set I cant recommend it enough. The engine works great in N scale and looks fantastic with 3 matching coaches in tow. I normally have it running around my coffee table while Im playing Red Dead Redemption lol

Edit: I think the weights in the cab are necessary, as if the boiler was metal, then there would just be weight over the front pony and unsupported part of the loco. Also, as a side note, you could reprogram the decoder so that it favours slow speeds :)

New York Central and Hudson River Railroad # 999 was known for a 112.5 mph run on the "Empire State Express" on May 10. 1893. So 4-4-0's were capable of high speeds. That locomotive still exists.

The bachmann spectrum 4-4-0 is probably the best one you can get unless I'm forgetting any. Also, I think everyone can agree that the 4-4-0 is probably the most iconic American engine made. Also, with the not being able to find the real basis for your specific engine, it's very likely it's just one of those that were lost to history

If you want this model detailed nicely and add some nice detail parts to it then I recommend to you to try Precision Scale Company (PSC). They make and sel detailparts for steam and diesel locomotives, all kind of freigt cars and passenger cars in HO/HOn3 and O scale. I have had good experiences with this brand, especially because you can choose from plastic or brass for almost every part.

Funny enough, I got a Bachmann hi-rail bus from Trainworld for Christmas, and it didn't come with a card for a catalog! I guess they only send products with those in the box to you! This locomotive is in the Royal Blue livery, which was a service started by the B&O in 1890. The photo they probably referenced probably isn't easy to find online, only in a book. It's more likely 4-4-2 Atlantics pulled the Royal Blue longer than 4-4-0s. The large, boxy headlamp is supposed to be an oil lamp. Electric headlamps are much slimmer and those locos usually have a dynamo generator to power them. I have to agree with you that the chuffing sounds too fast compared to the speed of the wheels and rods. Is the motor in your old 4-4-0 like the one in the old Bachmann J72? because I got one recently and the motor does not like to start without me turning it manually.

Is it just me or does that loco look undersize even allowing for the OO/HO scale difference? - anyway apart from that, not bad value for what it is and the sound file may well be adjustable to sync differently with the speed using the CVs... Can vouch for chuff being wonk on these Sound Value locos. I have a few of them and I've just agreed with myself to let them cruise along at a leasurely pace where the sound matches the chuff, as anything above that sounds like a clapped out diesel engine. Another thing to note is I can tell the chuff sync is out on this one. It's way too many chuffs per revolution, something that seems to've become more common with the newer Sound Value models. Maybe their programmers are getting lazy... but it *_is_* something that you can fix yourself if you got the knowhow and equipment.

Well Sam, would an engine of this vintage really run much faster than speed step 8? Most US railroads were VERY (relatively) low speed at 30 - 40 MPH, and those were considered "Express" trains. Freight (goods) trains often didnt exceed 15 - 20 MPH

I've done US CIvil War to 1900 era layouts and my rule of thumb was to have all-rail switches with as little plastic in the frogs as possible, simply because engines of the era were SO small and slight, you try to stack the odds in your favor as much as possible...could this be comverted to deadrail/power on board?

I'm not really a fanboy of American steam, even if there's been some very gorgeous locomotives produced by various roads over the years. However, the 4-4-0 is as much an icon of American steam locomotives as the Big Boy is. Humble, reliable, and charming. I'm sure others will be eager to have reviews done of their favorite American steam locomotive, and I can't really think of one I'd recommend. Some of this is a lack of personal experience dealing with steam (I model 1990s-era Conrail), but part of it is because I've seen people get quite excitable and it's hard to find something "underrated", unique, or otherwise something people won't think I'm mindlessly simping for.

worth 80 bucks imo, and thats being generous..ha!.has a good slowspeed. You could improve it all by adding details/better pickups, weight, better sound decoder, then your spending money/time...unless you enjoy it..I do love modding and tinkering with trains but prices have gone up in the states on everything, these are $269-375 on their site. they look nice especially the Pennsylvania and Central Pacific "Jupiter". but a bit on the high end for me and for what you pointed out, but i guess it's the average. I do like the UK's version of the 4-4-0, actually love the euro trains. very good review sam!

Great review, it’s a shame about the sound, to be once you get above SS-6 it starts to sound abit gun fighty… you’ve had poor luck with sound recently, don’t remember the last good sound loco you had… would be great to see you review the sound on a new Hornby HM7000 sound fitted loco. how it suits being used through your Power Cab, does it sync well, is the quality of the sound any good etc.

This is something of a re-tooling of an existing model that's been floating around Bachmann for... well, decades. I think some time in the 1970's is when it first appeared. Originally, it was a tender driven locomotive, but with a tender that used a drive shaft forward through the backhead of the boiler to drive the axles of the locomotive. That was done because, at the time it was first produced, motors weren't quite small enough to fit inside the boiler of the locomotive itself. Even now, the space is limited enough that they still need pickups in the tender to ensure the model has good connections. Some notes: The lamp is not electric. That's a kerosene type. The "wires" in the back are support arms for it. This is not prototypical, but done because of the model's origin. IE it being an older model. Those wires provide power for the light bulb, as well as support the model light itself.

The closest thing I could find to this in real life was the Baltimore & Ohio #25 “William Mason”. However, the William Mason is green and black instead of blue and white, and it also burned wood instead of coal, and had a large diamond stack because of that.

Your review was of much better quality than the model Sam, but I enjoyed the review anyway. Do you plan to review a Cavalex Class 56 anytime soon? I feel the 56 might even be a loco of the year - I’d love to see you give it the Sam treatment.

Sam, first of all, use the whistle button on the controller instead of function2 and you'll get the toggled whistle. Second, the cuff rate can be adjusted on the decoder by changing one of the cv's. Also, I find that the chuff sound works better on 128 steps instead of 28 steps. Third, many Amercian model locomotives, diesel, steam, and electric, come with a dedicated sound decoder instead of using a mother board with a plugged-in decoder. I do agree that Bachmann had ridiculously high "list" (aka MSRP) prices, but because of large dealer discounts they are almost never sold at those high prices. Also, Bachmann should do a better job with their electrical pickups.

Cute! Tough i think it still uses the old (ancent) Mantula/Tyco body molding! Just careful if u buy one online of these, do to the old ones had this livery too! (look for the DCC option if u are not sure) Also I just checked that the import taxes from the US is only 1/4 th (or less) if i want to ship one to the EU, than from the UK; so tbe BRexit really killed the 00 model industry (for the EU at least).

Perhaps if the tender had been set up with each tender bogie fed by opposite rails, the pickup issue would not be as bad.

Did some digging, myself and while B&O did have 4-4-0's, I couldn't find any going into the 700s for the number and none in B&O blue. That said, it's not uncommon for American manufacturers to do fantasy liveries with their models or take some creative liberties with real world ones.

If you've ever taken a drum stick and run it over an old fashioned wash board, that's what it sounds like at its high speed. It should chuff a 4 per revolution.

Bachmann are making a new run of these and the MSRP for those with DCC and sound starts at $375. Seeing this one I hope there’s much more metal on it 😅

I've got the same locomotive, mine seems to be a much more consistent runner. Even crawling over points. But the front bogey is always derailing. Glad I got the dcc ready version though because that value sound is.... no good
