Big wheels, beautifully engineered though they were, reached their zenith due to the brain - dissolving express passenger train speeds not only having been reached by the tiny radius, more numerous combinations of wheel pairs, but these Stirling stunners blinded by all the new gear new idea. Cheaper, faster, easier to manufacture and manhandle , all geared up for the tremendous effort needed for the heavier and longer freight trains to get going from a standstill, they were the diameter demigods death knell and wheely were all torque and no slipping.

We don't really have any of these type steam engines like this in the United States.But these types (emily) always reminded me of the old steam powered paddle boats on the mississippi. With the one big driver wheel almost resembles the paddle on the side of a steam ship.

We do have singles in the US - C. P. Huntington is a 4-2-4 tank locomotive, on display at the California State Railroad Museum. Its sister locomotive, T. D. Judah, was later converted into a 4-2-2 tender locomotive which is the same wheel configuration as the Stirling Single.

@@PhilBender612 Also look up the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad No. 999, that's probably the closest to being the American counterpart. 4-4-0 with 7.2ft driving wheels. Alleged to be the first locomotive to reach 100 mph.

@@kkobayashi1 I'd say our diesels are cool as well. The early streamliners definitely had some elegance to them, and even the more modern road switchers, while almost utilitarian to a fault, are hard *not* to imagine pulling (and/or pushing) a massive freight train.

i was a volunteer at the nrm locomotion, i helped restore the original tender, so when Rapido turned up to scan the stirling single i was over the moon at the prospect of being able to buy a model of this stunning locomotive. i am very happy with my model but i do have two points that i think for me anyway would of made the model that bit better. 1. I would of liked Rapido or Locomotion models to offer a version with both tenders as the real one in the nrm collection now has two tenders although there not displayed together with one being in storage at shildon. 2. In the sturrock original tender on the left hand side of the loco theres a little memorial to Lesslie Warriner one of the volunteers who worked on the restoration of the tender, sadly he passed away just before the restored locomotive and tender were reveled to the public, hence the memorial to this great man who put in many hours of hard work to get the tender to the condition it is in now. i would of liked to of seen this memorial on the model as a tribute to those that worked to restore the locomotive and tender especially Les. but other than that i think it has to be the best model from the last ten years that is until recently when Hornby have stole that crown with another model ive wanted since i was a kid, the Locomotion no1.

The capacitors are for DCC stay-alive (powerpack). It's pretty common to use a DC-to-DC converter along with low voltage supercapacitors to implement a DCC stay-alive. The capacitors are charged to their rated voltage, and when needed, the DC/DC boosts the capacitor output to a higher DC voltage. You can buy a controller like that separately, like the Zimo STACO series.

It could be argued that the main thing which caused the Singles to become obsolete, wasn't the performance of locomotives like the Atlantics (4-4-2), but rather the development in carriage types. When the Singles first came into service, the type of passenger cars they pulled, were relatively small six wheel cars, or very early small bogie cars. However, as development progressed, by even the early 1900's, designs had progressed to the point that rolling stock was getting bigger, and by extension much more heavy. Having a single drive axle, regardless of how large the wheels are on that axle, would mean you have a rather limited amount of tractive effort that could be used, and in turn, you'd have severe limitations on the capability of the locomotive. Meaning that while the idea "worked" it didn't really work as long when compared with other designs. The total life span being just 37 years at best, and 21 years at worst. (1870-1916 vs 1895-1916). Compare this with some of the 0-6-0 goods engines from around the same period, which continued working well into the 20th century, and in some cases, well into the nationalization period; and well you can see the issue. It may be a rather nice locomotive, but as designs go, it's something of a 'dead end'. In that there really wasn't much anyone could do to actually 'improve' the design. Other companies did try this from time to time, with limited success... but given that by 1928 the whole idea was abandoned by the various railroads, and not expanded on further (as happened with other locomotive designs with multiple drivers), then the design was largely obsolete by the time it was introduced. Meaning, neat idea, but couldn't keep up with developments.

Remember that in real life, this loco usually only pulled 4 and 6 wheel non bogie coaches. I remember seeing the Sterling Single when it was running on the GC at Loughborough. Firebox glow is fine, but remember normally steam locomotives usually ran with the firebox door closed, except when the fireman was stoking it. So this model is more realistic when it comes to this feature.

Re firebox lighting - When a steam loco is actually moving (other than possibly shuffling itself round a loco shed) then the door to the firebox MUST BE CLOSED! Otherwise the entire fire (coals etc gets sucked through the boiler and out the chimney). However if the door closes off the fire completely there may be insufficient air (i.e. oxygen) entering the firebox - so most firebox doors are constructed with flaps, smaller openings, gaps round the side etc which can be adjusted by the fireman to let some oxygen in - and its through these gaps which the glow of the firebox should be seen - not a whacking great glowing opening. This model by Rapido therefore does a great job of replicating how a real steam loco firebox looks when its in motion - unlike pretty much every other model with 'firebox glow' on the market.

I've seen the real thing at York in 2023 and I think the fascination behind the Stirling Single is the combination of the striking green livery, combined with the fact that it is the basis for Emily (which makes it recognizable to the children) and the huge driving wheel. I stood next to this engine and was blown away by the size of it and the very impressive speed of 85mph back in the late 1870s. I wish it would be restored to operational condition. This model from Rapido looks absolutely stunning. I had no idea it was all metal including the tender. Though the lack of screws for the splashers and the inbalance is very annoying. Though for the latter you can adjust or trim the spring a little bit and maybe improve it like that. But yeah, I would contact Rapido to get a new detail pack as I am curious how the tolerance of the splashers are on second radius curves and inclines. But besides, innovative model with the connector especially for way back then. I can see why it would have cost as much as it did back then. I still think it's worth it. But yeah all in all, just like the Jones Goods, 9/10 for me. Rapido is upping their game I think after the sloppy mess of the E-Class and the 15xx Pannier. Their next big project, the SECR 01 and later on the USATC-S160 will be quite promising if this one is anything to go by. I was really looking forward to this review and it was worth the wait. What a fantastic model and a in-dept review, Sam 👍👍

Got one with the large Stirling tender, yes it is a beautiful model,had mine since summer 2018,from the NRM.Came with screws fitted for the front bogie splashers, but those side chains for the buffer beams..very difficult to fit,tiny short lugs to fit in the locating holes, still have not fitted them.The axle ends are not blackened on mine,and the accessory pack contains an etch with four circular discs to fit over the driving axle ends ,the two extra just in case you lose one or two, haven't fitted these either!

Decent video here Sam, might look at getting one of these but for me I would want it in NRM condition which means I would be buying it from the Railway Museum, with regards to your comments about this yes this may be cheaper as a general release but when it comes to the museum models which the first release of these were the money is actually going to them which in turn helps the museum to operate, it’s basically like you say it’s better buying from a shop instead direct from the manufacturer,I have bought models from the National Railway Museum, my Bachmann V2 Green Arrow is one I bought from the York base a couple of years ago, you do pay high when buying from the museum but the money goes to them and a great cause.

As of today, mine is in US customs coming from Hereford Models; excellent, fast service. I have generally made it a habit to wait for your reviews before springing for a new loco, but other reviews suggested going ahead. Whew! Good on ya, lad. With the trailing wheels being powered, wouldn't that make the model itself a 4-4-0?

Very nice to see this class join your collection. I actually sort of had Emily on my mind after listening to an audio story of her first Christmas party on Sodor. I struggled to find the odd one out if there was one. Among singles, I saw the Caley, a red one, and a Rocket. Was the odd one on the turntable? I couldn't see the wheels that well to identify what it was.

Emily used to be one of my favourite characters from Thomas. Is it just me or do the manufacturers tend to do more Thomas bases these days? Maybe it's just a side effect of them moving their attention to more pregrouping/industrial locos. Whatever the reason Rapido's Stirling Single, J70 and their upcoming Alfred & Judy won't be as popular if not because of Thomas. Unfortunately I won't be getting the Stirling Single this time but I do wish to get Alfred or Judy later this year. :)

Hi Sam, lovely loco and review,,I have been waiting to here your opinion of this Single for yonks, so marvellous and glad you like it. I was lucky enough to pick up one of the first batch at an Antique auction just over 2yrs ago...at a steal 👍.... After seeing the balance issue with the front bogey and driver I've tested mine and its not the same , yes the front bogey is quite nicely sprung , but pushing down on the smokebox shows there is no movement on the main drive wheels at all. Loco just pivots on them and lifts the rear wheels..in theory it should pull better, so later this evening I'll stick all my teaks behind it and see how many it will pull before wheelslip occurs......👍 Great review and pleased you loved this model...course its a favourite...😄

@markweightman3805
@markweightman3805 19 сағат бұрын
@SamsTrains Just had another look, I would say the spring is a nice bit weaker..so placing it on the track the front bogey moves up a couple of mm and the main driver wheels touch the rails ok. If I put a piece of paper under the front bogey it very nearly hits the top of its suspension travel and yet drive wheels still sit correctly on the rails....
@markweightman3805
@markweightman3805 19 сағат бұрын
It appears the spring on mine is well designed to keep the bogey on the track with no lifting or taking the weight off the main drive wheels ...

What a lovely model...!! Now we need a truly modern Dean Single, and one of the Johnson Singles from the Midland Railway. A Stroudley Single would be a bit too much to ask for... 😜 Incidentally, do you realise that you have the same loco twice on the layout? The maroon LMS Caley Single is actually the same loco as the Caley blue one...!!
@briancooper562
@briancooper562 3 сағат бұрын
From seeing other reviews the front bogie spring is an issue. On some it lifts the front drivers, on others it lifts the under cab driving axle. If the locating screw is a self tapping then backing off or screwing in should work as long as the pivoting is not effected. Adding weight round the motor inside the boiler will bring the big wheels down, or shorten the spring in increments of 1/4 or 1/2 turns. A shim under the front spring will bring the back wheels down. It obviously needs the easiest of solutions because wear may tilt the balance of the loco through time used.

She is crying out for a rake of 6 wheel coaches. If she was mine I would adjust the front spring. When she ran in the “race to the north” era a rake of 20 6 wheelers was not unusual - so she should haul much better! Thanks for the Review, Sam!
@SamsTrains

Yeah definitely! And I'm going to try a different weaker spring when I get around to it and test again - don't think it'll be a big deal... 20 6 wheelers should be no problem with that mod! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

@efremmallach6501

There's another reason to make the tender of metal and therefore heavier. There is a tendency for light cars toward the front of a train to be pulled off the track when a train with heavier cars toward the rear goes around curves and the cars at the rear encounter rolling resistance for any reason. This is especially likely with earlier four-wheel rolling stock (versus more modern cars with bogies). Having a heavy tender reduces the likelihood of this happening,
