Thank you for the video. A note about pcie5 m.2 ssds: I have found that many new motherboards, such as the z790, may [or may not] support them. Moreover, the ones that do, may only support one of them and the rest of the m.2 slots are pcie4. In motherboards with an extension card, there may be an additional pcie5 m.2 slot out of the two slots (the other being a pcie4), meaning that for boards with 5 m.2 slots, only 2 may support 5, the other 3 are 4. Furthermore, some motherboards may have 3 m.2 slots and two them support 4tb drives and the last one only supports up to 2tb. They don't tell you anywhere. It took a lot of experimentation to discover this particular frustration.

7 months later, I'm still sitting on the fence. I went with some SATA ssd 3.5 drives instead which I already had new, after watching real world comparison videos. The leap in speed was great from platter to SSD, but not so great from SSD to NVME. I turned out to be right, because once your computer is booted, most everything you load is a random small file here and there, and you're not going to notice a speed difference between SATA and NVME... at all. Even a big multi gigabyte sized game might only shave you off a second or two in load time. To be honest, that's probably where you will see your biggest gains, as a game drive. I've compared my SATA SSD write speed in video editing to a RAM drive and there is next to no difference... maybe 1s speed gain in a 3 minute video render. Even so, I still use the RAM drive just to cut down on the wear and tear on my SSDs. I put all my money into RAM instead and don't regret it.

I am going to hard disagree with point that gen 5 may be worth it. If you don't have a system with a gen 5 m.2 slot AND can genuinely benefit from the performance gain now, just stick to gen 4. Even if think you can utilize current gen 5 performance, the cost reduction of gen 5 drives over the next year as they get optimized to full utilize the spec will be massive especially since the lowest end of the gen 5 drives are literally double the cost of the premium gen 4 drives. The same situation will repeat since gen 4 SSD's were like this back in 2019. Also the current gen 5 ssd's usually have worse IOP performance than the best of gen 4 since they are so focused on ultimate sequential performance so they can justify being gen 5 drives.

I'm gonna try this in a Lenovo Legion Pro 7 (2023) laptop as the system drive because one of its M.2 drive bays is only for single sided SSD's. Gladly the drive bays have built-in heatsinks in this laptop... let's see if it throttles under normal use cases but I doubt it.. Why? because statistically this drive runs not much hotter than other high performance Gen 4 drives and e.g. the WD BLACK SN850X which many people use in the Legion laptops (in the other drive bay for double sided SSD's) is also considered a very hot drive, but people seem to rarely have any heat related troubles under "normal" use cases. Yes yes, you can get these drives into throttling, but only if you transfer TB's of data very regularly... but not many average Joe's do that with a laptop, or?

@@trsskater- I copy Virtual Machine files (.VHD files) to the iSCSI target computer every week for backup. I'm just doing it to an array of SSDs (non-NVME - just 2.5" drives). Tgere are 2 categories in nvme drives. One with dram nvme and other with no dram nvme. If you get the drive with dram they will not slow down. Regardless if the file size if you copy 400gb at a stretch for example it will coppy those files at full speed and wont slow down.

I know for the most part the "typical consumer" generally won't run into this but the worst thing we've run into is 'silent failures' of consumer M.2 that report no errors of any kind then just die. We don't keep records like backblaze does since a lot of the stuff we rack is colocation but after spinning rust the next highest things we replace are consumer M.2 and SATA SSD's and sadly those silent failures have been seen across pretty much all manufacturers.

@blahorgaslisk7763 Жыл бұрын
16:34 - I challenge the statement that you are planning to use these SSD's for many years. Several things speak against this. First of all SSD's have not proved to be all that long lived. I've seen way too many die way too soon to feel much confidence in that we will be using them for all that long. And with the current crop of Gen5 drives running so hot that doesn't seem like a recipe for increased longevity. Then there's the limited improvement in performance compared to Gen4 drives. In a few years these will feel dated, both from a thermal point and from a performance point. Unless you have some very specific use for the drive it's unlikely you will be able to see and huge difference in performance compared to a good Gen4 drive. Mean while there is a lot of room for Gen5 drives to improve substantially compared to what's available today. Finally there's the drive size. 4TB will be a good size for a few years to come, but the smaller drives won't fare as well. And we will get larger drives! I have a feeling we might see more odd sizes, like 6, 10, or 12 TB drives. But if there's anything I've learned over the years it's that anytime anyone says something about the users not going to need or want more memory, performance, or storage you know they are going to be proven wrong. So I doubt buying the current Gen5 drives will be considered to have been a good investment in a couple of years. Instead buy a cheaper Gen4 drive that's almost as fast, and runs a lot cooler. In a few years you will stare at the drives that approaches 14 to 15 GB/s and then you might actually see a significant performance increase.
