990 Pro 2TB for whatever use case I have. Has good speeds, has decent tb written, has dram cache, isn't absurdly expensive, doesn't get as hot as the gen5 drives, and since firmware update is reliable like Samsung drives tend to be. For my 3D workflow it's perfect, and it's good for gaming and default OS operation too. Usually there isn't a big enough price gap to really bother considering other drives in its segment tbh

Edit: Rewatched that section after commenting, was too busy trying to find Solidigm in the chart, I didn't even hear the Samsung shout alongside it.

Please talk about endurance (TBW) as well. Write endurance becomes a far more important metric with time, than raw read-write speed and performance.
@blahorgaslisk77638 сағат бұрын
My own way to see it write endurance tops performance. I'd rather have a slightly slower drive that don't fail than a blazing fast one that die on me. Now the good thing is that the real fast drives usually have a decent TBW. The bad thing is that some of the cheaper drives like the Kingston NV2 and NV3 has a TBW of 160 for the 512GB version, 320 for the 1TB version, 640 for the 2TB version and 1280 for the 4TB version. They are cheap, but not all that durable. Mean while the Kingston Fury Renegade has a TBW of 500 for the 512GB version, 1000 for the 1TB, 2000 for the 2 TB and 4000 for the 4TB. These are a little more expensive but a lot more durable. A drive with really low TBW is the Crucial P3 Plus that has a TBW of 220 for the 512GB, 220 for the 1GB, 440 for the 2TB and 800 for the 4TB. Yes they are cheap, but they are definitely not the most durable. Notice that the TBW doesn't rise between the 515GB and 1TB version? Yea not something I've seen on other drive models.

A lot of good points. What I'm personally are looking at is primarily the TBW. I HATE having drives die on me. With HDD's it usually means the data is lost unless you pay a company to save it. With a SSD it usually means you end up with a read only drive, which is better, but still troubling. So I look for drives with a high TBW score. Right now I have got stuck on the Kingston Fury Renegade where the 2TB drive has a TBW of 2000. Yes it's lower than the Seagate Firecuda 530 2TB that has a TBW of 2500, but it's also a lot cheaper. Now it doesn't score perfectly but in my opinion the durability is worth it.

How exactly does a NVMe benefit daily Windows usage, over a SATA SSD? Been on a 970 Evo Plus since 2019, and to be honest - I don't really see impactful differences compared to a regular SATA 870 Evo. 😕
@TheSilverSmitih3 күн бұрын
So what are your thoughts on HMB vs DRAM? I've heard that DRAM was made to compensate for a lack of buffering when using the SATA protocol and was carried over to M.2 drives when they started becoming popular. I've also heard that the new NVME protocol supporting HMB basically makes DRAM obsolete, but I haven't seen any long-term tests to verify if this affects drive longevity or performance.
@theTechNotice3 күн бұрын
Good question, I've used both for both and every scenario. Personally, can't tell the difference, only in benchmarks, but if you need solid consistent performance, DRAM drives do better. Have a look at the consistency test results HMB drives aren't doing that well in there.

What about high capacity external RAID drives? For example, I've got two RAID 1 HDDs that are both using about 8tb space. I'm contemplating using two separate 8tb SSDs, a single 16tb SSD, or two separate 8tb SSDs with RAID 0 configuration, and use my old HDD RAIDs as backup devices. Also, the ports are going to be much slower than the drives themselves, but is it still worth getting faster SSDs because of read/write speeds, or is the connection to the PC going to be bottleneck on those speeds?
@theTechNotice3 күн бұрын
Depends how 'hot' the media is. If you're not actively using/working with the RAID1 media, keep it as HDD, cheaper and works just fine. I'd use nvme only if you need large capacity project drive for example :)

A little wrong, nvme is backward and forward compatible. A gen 4 drive in a gen 3 slot will actually maximize the performance of the gen3 slot in most instances... As fast as the interface can go while the gen4 drive takes it easy. A sure way to go as fast as your gen3 slot can possibly go.

Storage is all about use case. While you will not "feel" the speed of most Gen 5 drives just as a note be careful NVMe drives and endurance there are drives coming that will be HUGE but not for creators as their endurance is significantly reduced,. For "footage only" drives this may be fine but for OS drives that house things like swap files, caches, anything oft overstored you have a potential problem. Get drives with good cache memory amounts and higher endurance. Finally if you have to choose, choose drives with lower base temps and better random reads.

the truth I believe, Gen 3 of speed(3500MB/s) is enough for normal people for their OS, programs, even u can use a SATA drive for your game drive but it is slower when installing games. the speed u need the Gen4/Gen 5 when u download & installation of your steam library / other high volume size of program & related assets, such as u play Flight Sim 2020/2024 every day, u will need the Gen4/Gen5 SSD. 2. and then, u need to see the figures of randam read/write at the SSD reviews/benchmarks, higher is better 3. high recommend buy the SSD have DRAM cache 4. not recommand use the SSD for massive downloading, better to use traditional / NAS Hard drive 5. I still recommand people if u can, the SSD for OS is exclusive for it only, other documents, photos, games may use other storage devices, SSD, Hard Disk for them, make the OS drive clean and avoid the data lose and trouble when the OS drive fail/system failed.
