hi. i use dex for 2 years. my pc broke down and i had to do some work so I saw dex and said to try. since then I no longer needed a PC, at work i use windows.. but at home i dex its ok, many things are the same and forget that you are not on windows. for games you got some games. grid, COD, Black Desert ( what i play ), but you need a gamepad. Browsing its like on the pc, just use internet app ( desktop ). for people that just use the pc for music, movie, browsing and need world, powerpoint.. its perfect In short, with the same money for a phone you have the phone plus a desktop and a mini console (Grid and COD feel that way)

Haha, rather than reviews and the typical stuff I’m focused on detailed and informative videos for every device I get my hands on. That way I can create useful videos for the masses vs controversial videos for the few. Once the iPhone 11 drops Friday I will be putting it through its paces just like this and the same thing with the Pixel 4 😁

Samsung is doing good work with DeX. At this point there are few things that it does better/easier than Windows/Mac - I like the photo management, and good for file management, but those things can be done with the PC/Mac File managers equally well. Quite impressed that stereo sound, with Atmos/EQ/Upscaler and Adapt Sound all work seamlessly on your PC/Mac if you have high end speakers attached. Samsung has been working on it for almost 4 years now, so not quite infancy, but compared to Apple/Microsoft, it's a wee bit shorter on development time.

I am a few months late but all these stands true for the previous generation note/s9 and the coming note 20 and s20. I personally have used the DeX on windows and I do notice that for optimal performance, it's best to use above 50% battery. And as far as controls, directly interfacing with the phone via bt or USB otg could solve input lag. I have used DeX for docs, Cad design, writing code and I have even used full blown linux via apps like andronix+termux and UserLAnd. It's really neat.

My reason for watching your video is I am giving thought to the Samsung Tab S7 and DeX. All the while watching your video though very interesting I could not understand why not use my laptop as it is. Then at 15:00 you hit a high Note (pun intended), your comment makes much sense; glad I stayed to the end. It is my hope Fujitsu's ScanSnap S1300 will work with DeX. Update 2020-10-24: My Note 20 does have the ScanSnap app, but within DeX Fujitsu's ScanSnap S1300 is not recognized. On the screen for setup it shows iX1500, iX100, Other; other does not work. Using a laptop having ScanSnap software installed scan to the laptop, then from laptop screen drag the file onto the DeX screen. That file now appears in My Files > Recent Files; thus now on the Note 20. Yes, DeX is impressive.

I didn’t realize how much I loved Dex until I had it on the Note 9, now I have the Note 10+. I have Samsung docks plugged in to monitors all over my work office and my Note 10 has become one of my main computer devices. Using this little App gem called DISC LINK Platinum, I can hook up a USB CD/DVD rom drive and access the contents, burn to blank discs, or convert disc contents to PDF. With the amazing Dex file management system, thumb drives and such are a breeze. Really enjoy this system and find it replacing Windows for 90% of my work tasks. That being said, I also have an iPad and the new iPad OS is pretty hot, too. So I think between my iPad and Note 10, I no longer have any real use for Windows machines. I do occasional 4K editing, and that is a breeze on iPad using LumaFusion- up to 6 4K tracks and 12 sound tracks. Wish their was an editing equivalent to LumaFusion on Dex/Android but at this moment there isn’t- power director isn’t even close. My question though, is if you’re already using Dex on a Windows machine, why not just use the windows machine? The apps are more capable and the machine is likely more powerful. I was mystified as to why Samsung made a big deal out of running Dex on a Windows machine- I just don’t understand why anyone would. Running Dex on a monitor with attached accessories makes perfect sense but I will never use the Windows Dex integration. Love Dex though. I think most people could use it as their daily compute OS if they gave it a try.
@lutherwhite4443
@lutherwhite4443 4 жыл бұрын
The video actually explained why someone would like to run dex on window machines. Firstly, for file transfer between your phone and PC; secondly, if you have an old netbook, you could make it useful again by taking advantage of its bigger screen and keyboard while running dex.
@Unkn0wnC0mmand
@Unkn0wnC0mmand 4 жыл бұрын
@@lutherwhite4443 if you have an old netbook you're going to cripple dex performance by running the virtual OS on very poor hardware and if you already have a PC, what could you possibly want to transfer to your phone that 1) isnt already in the cloud, 2) easily transferrable by the cloud, or 3) can stay in the cloud and doesn't actually need to be on the device? Microsoft Word? Fully in the cloud. Amazon music? Fully in the cloud. Photos? Google photos, amazon photos, etc., fully in the cloud. You'll find that around 5% of people actively "transfer xyz" to their phones. I work with PDFs by the dozens daily. Video files, sound files, photos. All Sync to my OneDrive, Google Drive and cloud instantly. Transferring to my phone via a PC connection would be exponentially slower than just pulling from my cloud via my mobile connection or wifi. So, no. The video did not already explain the usefulness of running dex on a pc.

@@Unkn0wnC0mmand doesn't dex run from the phone's hardware? Not the PC's? Is it different between using dex on display as opposed to pc?
@Unkn0wnC0mmand
@Unkn0wnC0mmand 4 жыл бұрын
@@docmdb87 the point is DeX comes in clutch when a PC isn't easily accessible or you dont want to wait for one to power on. As much as I like DeX for what it is, there isnt a single thing that you can do on DeX that you couldn't do 10x faster on a pc- even an old one. The point is, if you're already on a PC, why in the world would you want to take the time to go into DeX? Old netbook computers have horrible cramped keyboards, bad trackpads, horrendous screens- are these not also hardware components? Not to mention snail slow disc drives that slow the data connection between the phone and pc. Yes the hardware of the PC affects the experience within DeX. It's still running atop of the pc OS, so that's another thing the PC has to manage. Open DeX on a PC, press control alt delete and view the system usage for processor and ram. DeX will be near the top of the list despite it "running" on the phone. Writing a word document? Doable just fine on DeX but better on a PC. Editing a PDF? Doable on DeX but better on PC. Transferring files from point A to B? Doable on DeX but better on PC. Again, I reiterate my point, why bother to boot into DeX on a PC, when you're already on the PC and could do that task better on PC to begin with?

I love DeX; but I fail to see a good use for the DeX app on PC aside from drag and drop (all I use the app for). DeX shines on its own, not connected via a subpar USB connection (which creates the lag) to a real PC. You are supposed to use it when a PC isn't available via HDMI.over the USB-C port. In order to use it with the app in say...a workplace or a library; you need to be allowed to install the app. Many of these PC's are locked down and connecting external devices or installing apps can get you kicked out or fired. DeX can be a great tool for people who want to (and can) minimize their setups. Most people aren't pcmasterrace gamers and live in a web browser or their documents. These aren't demanding tasks and a phone can be enough to cover everything. This setup can also kill your need for a firestick or other media boxes too. Just plug in and plop on the couch. DeX truly makes your phone an ideal all-in-one device; as long as you can live with the limitations of your phone being your only computer.

They finally released support for the note 9 and I was all about that life. This is how I use my DeX setup everyday. I have a dell business laptop that I got for $150 to do my IT contract work on and I have it connected to a 34 inch ultrawide that sits above my laptop screen. I just plug my phone in and it boots right into DeX and I keep it on my laptop screen with windows 10 right above it so I get the best of both worlds now. Its been the best setup and I dont think Ill be using anything else. I love that the DeX icon on the windows toolbar blinks whenever your phone gets a notification.. I haven't used Dex much yet (just got the Note 10+ last Friday), but played with it a bit on Windows. I can see where it would be really useful for traveling light. IE: Your Note (which you'd have anyway) with a USB dock and an HDMI cable ... maybe a foldable/compact Bluetooth keyboard ... and you have a great little hotel room productivity center without lugging a laptop and all the extras. Probably great for students too, since you have Office on board. And you hit on the best part - no transferring files needed. It's all right there on YOUR phone. You're basically just hijacking the display. I've been trying to decide for years if Dex was just some stupid gimmick, but I think it could be very legitimately useful in a lot of ways, for a lot of people.

I have only used Samsung Dex with a Windows computer if I happened to be working on it and just needed to read text messages on the screen. Usually it is my desktop and I have 2 monitors. I just maximize the Dex window on the secondary one. I have used Dex quite a bit on a "dummy terminal" setup I made with a 12.5 inch portable Uperfect monitor and a Brydge 12.3 keyboard originally made for the Surface Pro 3. The monitor is thin enough that it fits in the tabs for the Pro 3. The Samsung usb-c hub that has HDMI, USB, and ethernet is attached to the back of the monitor with velcro. The Samsung 25w power adapter powers the hub. I connect the phone to the hub with a USB-C extender cable, this also charges the phone. The USB 3.0 port on the hub powers the monitor with a 6 inch USB to micro USB cable. The hub connects to the monitor with a 6 inch HDMI to mini HDMI cable. The hub can also be powered by a portable charger/battery. I just have to power the hub before I connect it to my phone for some reason. The setup works like a charm. When traveling I no longer take a laptop with me.

Andronix is very similar its not so plug and play as LoD was, but runs pretty well , can choose different distros, and the payed ones work great. Really only disadvantage i see compared to LoD was not being able to install on sd card, but now with a note 20 ultra space is not an issue, then more complicated initial installation and need to start with a couple of command. But hey if you are installing linux on a phone using it as a computer you probably wont be scared to type a couple of commands on termux and starting a vnc player.

Why do folks spell it as RAW, it is not an acronym as JPEG. It is a word describing a photo with raw data, not processed into another format. The word raw in photography is not any different than using the word raw describing raw meat, raw data, raw veggies, raw wood, raw anything. Notice in those instance it is spelled in lowercase, the same should apply in photography.

Hi, Jonathan. I have been using Dex since my old Note 8 on my particular PC. However, as Note 10+ has more interactivity with PC, I would like to use it on my corporate PC, but the problem is that this interactivity requires that both (Note 10+ and PC) must be “logged in” with the same account, which does not occur, as the Note 10+ is “logged in” with my private account and the corporate PC with my corporate one. Is there a simple solution?

I’m using dex on a note 9, when you use microsoft word or excel on the phone it work as a full mobile version, when you use it on dex it asks for a subscription to edit and save your work. since the dex version of the app is generated by the mobile app and the mobile version doesn’t require a subscription, is this just microsoft double dipping. A nearly $2000 dollar phone that comes with full version of microsoft word and excel through the partnership with samsung but then cripples the app in dex, makes dex less appealing. when you used word was that after adding a subscription to dex version or has samsung fixed this issue in the note 10 range?

I think being able to use Dex is a great alternative for those who want to have a more desktop-like form factor and a bigger screen with the Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy Note 10 Plus. and Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G. I agree that probably Word, Excel, and PowerPoint use through Dex will probably be the most useful thing. It'll be helpful in an office setting or in school. Now you don't really need a laptop and you can just use a smartphone, the cable, and a monitor/projector. Someone I never liked when using a smartphone is the mobile version of desktop apps. The smaller screen and the lack of a normal keyboard & mouse makes it very time consuming and uncomfortable. I guess they should patch Dex to work better with games; especially to deal with the noticeable input lag. Of course people can just use a laptop which will be more powerful. But Dex is more secure and more portable. I don't have a Samsung phone, but if Apple had something like this, I'd probably use it with my Windows 10 desktop at home and also at work.

@@OT4Tech I think it would be great if Apple made some sort of a dock system that you can use an iPhone or an iPad with. But that'd require Apple going with USB-C on an iPhone which they stupidly didn't do with the iPhone 11 Pro nor the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

I am not a DeX fan, I do not get it, but I am sure some people use it, albeit not many, so its a bonus for those. The thing I find is that having it on your laptop seems to defeat the point. Why not just use your laptop for what you want to do, which will be likely more powerful and have far more choice. It seems like a gimmick. For those that do not use a laptop much, maybe buying a dock, cable, keyboard and display will allow you to do stuff you need to on a bigger display. However, for the cost of all those accessories, I could buy a decent Chromebook and not only not have the hassle of connecting up and being stuck at a desk, but it becomes useful for travelling, in bed, on the sofa, in the cafe, in the car, at work, at college, etc. The point is DeX is very limited in usability and of course, with a Chromebook you also have ChromeOS. Android tablets died a death because of their lack of developers support and now Google has not updated in Android 10. DeX is basically a tablet without touch support so even less useful. I really think there is limited life in this but like Bixby, Samsung do not want to admit defeat so here we are, with Android on your laptop! Just my thoughts and hope Samsung will do what I suggested when it first came out, a barebones modular laptop casing that you can connect with your phone and have a choice of displays, battery size, maybe eGPU and keyboard. Now that would be real innovation and something that we could all be excited about!

I've been using dex on my note 10+ to record music, I plug into a hub with usb 3 ports, pass through power, hdmi, and a few other things then into my monitor, mouse, keyboard, and audio interface. I use audio evolution which picks up my focus rite and I record with that. Comes out exactly as it would on my normal laptop and everything has been working really well. It's been a great device for productivity, being able to record on a PC like format then edit stuff wherever I go with just my phone has been a really cool experience.

My DeX is so slow that is hard to use. I have Note10+, and I'm using the type C to type C cable. What could be the problem?
@BW022
@BW022 4 жыл бұрын
Well.. what exactly is slow? What is your setup? USB-C monitor, USB-C to HDMI hub, or Dex to a PC? For hardware (monitors), I typically eliminate it by plugging another device in. Plug in a USB-C laptop or tablet if you have one and see if that is working correctly. For PC, try using WiFi and Miracast. That avoids any hardware. If the hardware is slow... look at replacing the USB-C cable (cheap online ones are often 5GB or less on data) or USB-C to HDMI hub. For software, the issue would be what is slow? Application performance you can test merely doing the same things on the phone itself. Use a BT mouse/keyword and open the same application on the phone (without connecting to anything). Try typing, opening documents, browsing web pages, etc. Make sure the apps themselves aren't slow due to something like accessing the cloud/web, WiFi, etc. Good idea is to download a fair sized video file and try playing that. Without details... people really can't help.

the screen refresh rate on non-hdmi is benchmarked as up to 30 fps. I didn't experience this with my samsung c to hdmi cable. It's technically different from mere lagging cause it still receives and sends signals fast enough, but it's just the refresh rate.
