Most new device launches go the same way: usually the press gets review units before they’re widely available, and we get to use them for a few days or a week if we’re lucky as we work on our review.
Then press day arrives. The embargo on media coverage lifts, and everyone posts their reviews and videos at the same time. It’s a huge frenzy, commenters go nuts, and it’s a giant explosion of frantic opinion-sharing activity.
For about … a day. And then it all goes away. Sure, there’s followup coverage as people find bugs and hidden features, but after that initial blast, not many people revisit the device to see how it feels a few months later, because everyone’s already focused on the next big deal coming down the pipe.
So let’s do something about that. Let’s see how we feel about devices when they’re not shiny and new anymore. This is After The Buzz.
---
Let's take a second look at one of the most polarizing phablets in 2015 and see if you should still consider the investment. Samsung's Galaxy Note lineup took a dramatic turn in 2015, so it was crucial that we give the Galaxy Note 5 some post-review treatment. That one product you could trust as the power user haven with expandable everything and an enviable spec sheet is sadly no more. Instead, Samsung decided to make this the larger sibling of an already aging Galaxy S6, and disappointing many Galaxy Note fans in the process, at least if you read the comments. Whether that was a smart move is yet to be seen in sales figures, but there's a lot of good from an end user stand point. Watch our full After The Buzz video to learn why.

Nice review, I've had the Note 5 since just after the launch and it's been great. I can see how some may not need the Spen but it's essential for my work. I disagree on the battery life. I'm a heavy user and this battery lasts a long time, 7 hours ost is not unusual, don't know where the 4 hours came from. On the Note 4 the major pain in the ass was having to switch of the phone, take of your case, take off the back, replace the battery, and then put the damn thing back together. Not convenient during a busy work day on an engineering construction site. This battery goes on and on. I have a battery pack but now I leave it at home, never used it and will sell it. As regards storage, 1.I never trust Micro SD cards, they are prone to unexpected failure, I had this experience with a SanDisk 64gb. Luckily I was backed up. 2. I have a lot of sensitive engineering data and documents, and a stolen or lost phone could be very valuable for my competition! I use the cloud, including One Drive for business which is highly encrypted and safe.

#1.Why would anyone not put a screen protector on their phone to protect it from scratches and or cracks from being dropped? #2. I believe you called the microphone a speaker, and it has worked just fine for me. #.3. The audio is vary loud and clear, just as the screen quality is fantastic for both photos and videos. #4. Having a slightly bigger and slightly higher resolution screen is a plus for those who bought this phone, so they can use the Samsung Oculus Gear VR headset. Due to the images and videos having to be half the screen for each eye and thus half the resolution, there is a tiny bit of pixelation when using the Gear VR, but this tech is still new to the cell phone arena and will surly improve over time. #5. The camera works very well in low lighting situations for both photos and videos. There are some features from my Galaxy Note 3's built in camera app I do not see, but since such things can be had via a future download/update, or through another camera app....

+Preenon Majumdar. Yes, both the Note 5 and 6P have their strong points but it all comes down to personal preference. For me I rather a aluminium build over glass with the best fingerprint sensor out. I also could not stand touchwiz and the 6P came with what I wanted on it. But of course in saying that if you absolutely need the best camera, display and processor then sure, go for the Note.

This is a guy who clearly doesn't poll people on how they use their devices. "Most of the writing will be done on screenshots"? Really??? I guess if your main reason for writing is noting likes, dislikes and flukes of a phone, that might be true, but the average Note user is going to do most of their writing while making shopping lists, writing down hasty and important notes, or adding contacts or dictated addresses quickly. NOT screenshots. And then: "...a nightmare to organize later"? Where have you been, Mister Doesn't-know-what-Scrapbook-is? You don't take a shot of the whole screen to make a note about one part and then save it in "the huge bottomless bin." You use Smart Select and save one small part in the scrapbook, in neatly-organized categories which you can expand on-the-fly, complete with notes and even text recognition to help you out if you want to search it later. I use the pen on a fairly regular basis, and I love having it every time. Otherwise, good review.

Got my Note 5 last week, so far it's alright... I've noticed some stutter on the Facebook messenger application but that only was a problem when I had like 20 applications open in the background. Also was surprised that the day I picked the phone up from AT&T Android 6.1 was available. I prefer the look of that compared to 5.0

Note 3 is a great device. I've owned a 3, Note 4 and currently a Note 5. The 3 main reasons why you would consider a Note 5 from a Note 3 are; 1) Screen resolution/clarity - You will immediately notice a difference side by side in viewing photos, videos, reading text. 2) Build quality - Exceptional. Huge difference. 3) Camera - If this matters to you, it's even better than the Note 4. Perfect photo almost every time. If your Note 3 is still in tip top working order, I'm sure none of this will matter as the Note 3 is a super solid device. However, I feel that you will be pleasantly surprised after using the Note 5 for 1 day. Cheers

+TheRealATV Yeah I've owned all three too, I agree with what you said. The brightness of the display is a huge selling point to me, I hate not being able to see anything on my phone when I'm in the sunlight. Also the phone is much snappier and the ability to take the S-Pen out and just start writing has helped me out so many times. It's a great phone.

Quicker promise for software updates? That's their selling point?! I'm rocking 6.0.1 on my HTC A9. The Note 5 still has Lollipop. Either Samsung is lying, is irresponsible or puts user experience on the backburner if they believe they're providing a better software experience for Note 5 users. Also, why only the Note 5? Why should other users be published for trying something different like the S6 Edge variant? If these are flagship devices, they should be treated as such. Apple makes no exceptions for their devices, even older ones. My old iPhone 4S was rocking the latest IOS, the same version running on the iPhone 6, before my Galaxy S5 got Lollipop. I think this sort of behavior really calls into question Samsung's deligence, dedication towards their customers and quality, and the necessity of the still heavily skinned and often lackluster Touchwiz.

@thez28camaroman
@thez28camaroman 8 жыл бұрын
+demalih Again, you misread, I know what he said. Problem is that it's a horrible selling point, a questionable promise (6.0.1 is already out and Samsung can't get their Marshmallow build public yet?) and an inappropriate software policy.
@Samosayummyyay
@Samosayummyyay 8 жыл бұрын
+Dark Rush I am getting weekly updates on my Galaxy S6...You do realize that the Galaxy S6 already had all Marshmallow features baked into it through those weekly software updates?? Doze feature, security updates, raw-camera support...The S6 can do those stuff while on Android 5.1.1 while those features were specific for Marshmallow.. So don't be fooled by numbers because the device itself already has those "new," features/updates. Next time, before spreading false information, do your research >.<
@michaelasar1012
@michaelasar1012 8 жыл бұрын
+Kameel exactly I hate how people are obsessed with number s while I'm getting 6 to 7 hours SOT easy with doze on my note 5.. Security patches are a thing now and stock android has barely any features compared to touchwiz so why would it matter, people complaining about updates don't even know what differences 6.0.1 had with 6.0 and don't realize OEM can implement code in other releases in an 'earlier' update as well as fixing bugs themselves without relying on small google updates to do it.
@thez28camaroman
@thez28camaroman 8 жыл бұрын
+Kameel That's not accurate and you're an idiot. Not arguing a troll and fanboy that makes excuses for his favorite company, but I will set you straight. Security patches come from Google, more with 6.0 than 5.1.1; only Marshmallow has dose, app permissions and now on tap; and also adds revamped features like a new app drawer and more emojis by default.

Great video as usual, but I think Note 5 is just few months old, if not new. You should do "After the Buzz" videos of the devices which are atleast an year old. We'll feel good, if we see a completely forgotten but still relevant device, because these days, most of us are feeling little nauseated by listening the names like Nexus 6p, Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, Note, OnePlus 2, iphone 6....

I was worried about the removable battery and sd card support at first but after using the note 5 (coming from note 3) I was very happy with the trade off. The phone feels amazing in the hand and i can use Samsung's fast charger and battery pack w/ fast charging if my battery gets low. I don't take many pictures or shoot videos but i enjoyed having all my podcasts downloaded without worrying about insufficient space. Luckily I still have an old android phone for that. There are plenty of services that offer free storage and of course cant forget googles unlimited pics and KZbin. Have had the note 5 for almost 3 months now and still fast like the day I first used it.

Jaime, you're great at reviewing phones, but when you touch on battery life can you provide screenshots of screen-on time in your future reviews? It'd give much better context for all of us since battery varies wildly depending on the person's usage. Thanks!

This is the 5th iteration of the Note series and I still haven't seen developers take advantage of the hardware. Are there any standout productivity apps outside of Samsung's own suite to take advantage of the pen? I'm glad Samsung gives people the choice of input but I don't think this will be more efficient than a Blackberry.

Just got my note 5 yesterday, my only two complaints are that the phone is very slippery and the bezels are very very thin. Almost too thin, very often I'll be watching a KZbin video or any type of media and I will accidently skip forward or touch the screen. This thing is a POWERHOUSE.

I always enjoy the after the buzz series. Glad to know that my main concern is a true concern as I love everything that we get in Note 5 and S6 edge plus, but they removed the removable battery and kept it locked... for me, a mobile phone is equivalent to my personal gadget for everything I do, entertainment, emails, surfing and gaming, I cannot have my battery drained out that fast without the option of having a spare batt to turn to. I really hope that Note 6 could combine the best features of Note 5 and S6 edge plus with removable battery.

It is a beautiful device, But Samsung has to do more for their Ram and software. Not only that somehow bypass the carriers to push out OS upgrades faster. HTC, Sony, and Motorola are all updating their devices to Android M. What is the hold up?

The battery removal and SD slot is ESSENTIAL. Not that I swap batteries; but its status quo that they force you swap phones in a fewer number of years. This is called Planned Obsolescence; they deliberately shorten the lifespan of a phone. I have an S4 and swapped out low capacity batteries for new one every year, and went from a 16gb SD card to a 64gb sd card. i just swap it for a 15-20 dollars. The more people buy newer phones, I more I see a landfill of electronics. Therefore, I latest (perhaps my last) Samsung I will get is an S5 or Note 4.

Well the TMobile version I got is rock solid after all these months. I was very skeptical in the begining mainly because of the lack of SD card but my choice of a 64 Bit version has proved absolutely worthwhile. No sign of lag and I never thought I would say that about a Samsung phone. The battery life though is a tricky one. The recent Samsung Battery Optimisation software appears to be helping a bit. This is a solid contender to be the smartphone of the year. This is also the year that Samsung finally delivers in my opinion.

How long did Pocketnow wait before they released this After The Buzz episode? August 2015 to December 2015 is a very short 4-month span. It's probably just 3 months if you factor in the logistics that Samsung had to iron out in delivering the product to market.

I have had the Note 2, 3, 4 and now currently on the 5. with the 6.0 update this is by far the best note 5 ever and I can't imagine not having the option of an s pen for pretty much the same price as the edge plus. overall, my favorite Note was the 3 because it was so advanced and had all the bells and whistles. the note 4 in my opinion was the gimmick bore phone and actually bored me so terribly that I dropped the Note line and went back to the S line (S6 edge) that proved to be a mistake so here I am again with the current Note. I am so pleased with this phone that I prob won't even get the 6 unless it is something really special. special meaning that it looks like one or those concept phones out there with no bezzle but flat (not curved edges) now that would be cool

I tested the Note 5 for about a month and will be going back to my Note 4. The only thing I'm going to miss is Samsung Pay. It's so cool to pay for stuff with your phone! However, I can't justify spending any money to swap out my Note 4. I used the S6 edge + for a month and would totally spend money to get that phone. That phone is just amazing to use. It's so light and sexy!

People seem to be so fickle when it comes to Samsung. People complained about it's cheap plasticky construction and Samsung fixed that with the S6 and Note 5. Now people complain about the lack of battery and expandability.
