Nothing new? All smartphones start scratching at level 6, while this starts on 8, it's a huge improvement
@PBKreviews
@PBKreviews Жыл бұрын
It might be a huge improvement against phones which scratch at a level 6 but not all smartphones scratch at a level 6. I've done durability videos before on phones 2 years back which didn't scratch till an 8. But mainly against the S22 ultra, it is an improvement since the S22 ultra had minor scuffs/barely visible scratches starting around a 6-7. I was hoping for the Victus 2 to hold up till a 9 but yep.

Have you given it a thought that the initial scratch test might have compromised the structural integrity of the glass, making it susceptible to shatter easily ?
@PBKreviews
@PBKreviews Жыл бұрын
Yes, if it was deep enough yeah, but they are just surface scratches. If anyone put their phone in their pocket and got scratches on the screen, that doesn't mean that any protection is out the window and after it being in a pocket then the glass is going to shatter if dropped. But if it had deep scratches or any cracks, 100% would be a different story.

I smell bullshit. The Ultra scratched at a level 6, with deeper grooves at a level 7 - the same as previous generations. In this test, it would imply that the glass has sapphire in it, and it doesn't. One of two things are happening.. the person using the mohs picks, used the wrong ones, or they are lying.

@@PBKreviews nah 8 was the level the cg victus CGG 7 used to scratch at as well. Only the s22u scratched at a 6 because I guess and from what I've seen when researching on this, the glass is softer because of the higher radius of curvature it needed to be processed at a higher temp and that affects the structure.

If the scratches are really deep yeah but these surface scratches shouldn't affect it. Or else anyone with any scratches would automatically have to worry about drops cracking their screen. Even last year's 22 ultra I did cracked brand new out of the box and the S23 plus from this year. so if the flat S23 plus can't withstand the first drop, no way the curved will.

As per instructions in the kit, it states to hold it like using a pen and apply only medium (7lbs) force. I do as the instructions on the kit state and those are the results I got. whether he is applying more force or not or if I'm not doing something correctly I am not sure but I did the galaxy s22 ultra from last year the same way and last years scratched at a 6 or 7 but for me the S23 ultra didn't scratch at a 6 or 7. You can compare my video from last year to see. I can't say I'm 100% right but I followed the directions the best I could and that's the result I got. I can always press down really hard and force scratches but that won't be accurate either.

The drop test should be done with the screen with NO cracks. Cracks are on hard materials as a cancer. Once a little one starts, the rest is doomed. To have the correct results, the drop test should be done with the screen that comes out of the box, no level 6 or 7 scratches... I'm a mechanical engineer, so it's literally my job to know this kind of things
@PBKreviews
@PBKreviews Жыл бұрын
You said cracks. Yes if it had cracks of course. But surface scratches like these not really. I am not saying I know any better than you if you're an expert in the field but I have done tests like this before with a phone that had scratches and one of the same that was new out of the box with similar results. If that was the case, anyone who put their phones in their pockets would have to worry that they just voided any protection on their screen since objects in their pockets would cause scratches and their goes the protection out the window. If the scratches were deep then yeah but these aren't deep. Plus the cracks didn't form from there the scratches were, but from the corners and sides of the screen when dropped. If the glass was weak at the mark of the scratch, it should have cracked from there first. But like I said, I don't have a degree dealing with glass, maybe you know something that I dont.
@aliciafrappantbas
@aliciafrappantbas Жыл бұрын
@PBKreviews So, in summary, you are partially right and partially wrong. By doing drop tests with samsung phones, you get consistent results with the same type of materials (samsungs screens in this case), and you could expect consistent results on the different test. Consistent in this conversation means they will break at a similar height and in similar ways. Yet, to be able to say without doubt that the material of the screens is not "better" or "worst" we or you, or who ever is doing the test, should do it a lot of times, with a lot a phones. Like a 100 phones, for example. Then, you could use statistical methods to extrapolate the results. I'm not saying you should buy a 100 phones to break them, that's not your job to do, and I doesn't make sense.
@aliciafrappantbas
@aliciafrappantbas Жыл бұрын
Also, when doing a drop test and taking into account what samsung says in their marketing info, one should be critic with the information given by the manufacturer. When samsung says the material of the new screens is 30% tougher or 30% more scratch resistant, they mean under THEIR internal way of measuring those two factors. Way we don't know (because it's a manufacturer secret). Taking into account that we also don't know the crystalline structure of the screen, neither we know how many layers of each specific crystalline structure they use (another manufacturer secret), in my opinion is very hard to affirm just by doing 1 single drop test that the phone is tougher or more fragile than the phone from last year. Yet, one drop test is infinitely more useful than no test at all
@PBKreviews
@PBKreviews Жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct. These tests are not 100% fact. Only many times with different ways can you come to an average result. This is just mainly a rough test.

@alanbio
@alanbio Жыл бұрын
Yeah, these are official Mohs Hardness Scale, used to measure hardness of minerals, and so, other materials can also be classified according to this scale. 1 is talc and 10 is diamond. So plastic is around 2, fingernails around 2.5, copper coins 3.5, knives around 5.5, and so on. One material is harder than other when it can scratch it but not be scratched by it.

The scratches are minor surface scratches. If that were the case, anyone who has a phone with a scratch on the screen would have shattered glass since any drop would cause it to break. Plus from the drops the glass didn't start to crack from the scratch spots. If they were gashes or cracks in the glass then yes but not with minor scratches.

Wouldn't scratching the screen at level 8 and 9 make it more prone to breaking ? I think the glass would fair better in the drop test without the scratches 🙂

yes, there should be 2 separate devices for scratch and drop test. 8 for topaz, 9 for corundum level which is quite deep, he says slight improvement but s22u starting to scratch at 6, so what is significant improvement? also hardness measurement tools should be checked before scratch because it is possible to change their scale unintentionally

Yes correct, they need to be calibrated before use which they are. Also scratch wise yeah there was improvement but when they advertise it, they make it seem like its so much better so I was expecting vary faint if any scratches at an 8 but handles just the same as other phones from a year or two ago which also would last till an 8. However I will be testing the flat surface of the S23 to see if it does any better since last year the S22 did better compared to the 22 ultra.

@@PBKreviews The first reviews that are posted often make a big impression on people. While most people only show certain parts of the phone, you show different aspect, the inside of them and how durable it is and you usually do reviews faster than anyone else, I learned the difference of IP14PM design thanks to you. I understand that advertisements can sometimes be misleading, but its still promising, also there are some slight changes of S23U design, screen is less edgy but since you starched, integrity of the screen is affected and more prone to break. I'm looking forward your test with S23

@@schizofennec Thanks, but I have the S20 Ultra and my wife has the S22 Ultra and both rattle yes, but after dropping it by mistake and both our phones don't zoom smoothly as before so I thought that the camer sensors have moved inside and has affected the smoothness of the zoom - which never used to be the case when we first got them - thinking of upgrading mine from S20 Ultra but not sure yet - thanks

Yeah if its deep scratches of course. However small surface scratches like this I don't think would effect it, or else anyone placing phones in their pockets would need to worry about drops breaking their screen right away after when it has scratches. However in future, I will make sure to use brand new units. For the S22+ drop test, I will be using a new one.

Most cases no, but if you wear tight pants or jeans and your pockets are stuffed, there is the possibility of sharp objects scraping into the screen from pressure. But I think in most cases should be fine.

if the scratches were deep enough yeah but they are just surface scratches for the most part. If that was the case, anyone who has a phone in their pocket rubbing against things getting scratched would have to worry that the glass will break if ever dropped once its been in their pocket.

Instead of the lame scratches from keys and coins. Why not put them in your pocket and sit down with them crunched together. That'll be a real world test imo As far as the drop, once it breaks, I'm not sure you can judge the quality of cracks since it was already compromised. Maybe test each drop with a new screen? Me personally I think if I drop my phone it's going to be a goner. So dropping is pretty much a killer regardless. I would however like to see you test the repair shops waterproofing after a fix. I'm pretty sure Samsung will sell it for the 30m 1.5 meter dunk, but I'm a little Leary after my S7 was repaired and the place used inferior quality glue. I'm just lucky enough to catch it before it was DOA

well when holding the keys I can apply more pressure to see if it will scratch. In the pocket it wont apply that much pressure. As for the drop test, It would be really expensive to use multiple devices for each drop. My channel as is runs at a loss so yep its the best I can do at the moment.

@@PBKreviews Appreciate your reply. Personally I think if you have keys in your pocket and sit down (like in a vehicle) you tend to be more susceptible to scratches. Any point where you rub two things together it leaves minor dings. As far as the drop test, that's understandable. But unless someone tries to do multiple tests like that I just feel it's always gonna be cracked especially on a concrete surface. Still would like to see IP68 tests after it's been fixed. Good luck with the channel

The harder they make the glass the less it will survive shock impacts. The hardness scale just prevents scratches. The harder an object is the less it's willing to bend. It's really just physics; they're going to have to rely on coatings to make phones more scratch resistant and resistant to falls. Softer glass with better coatings. The only other chemically different glass upgrade they can to is to change to Sapphire glass but it is very expensive and also has issues with impact resistance. It's just more scratch resistant.
