I think it actually seems nifty. I haven't used a phone with a physical keyboard since the Droid Pro, and I loved the Droid Pro so I was thinking of getting the Blackberry Keynote for nostalgia purposes and deal with the losses I'd take not having a better/bigger phone. But now that this case seems to work pretty well, the S8 seems like it's definitely the better option, because I can use it when I want to and have all the extra stuff I'd lose with the Blackberry.

I'm pretty sure the keys do not actually touch the screen. While I don't have one in hand to verify this, I would imagine that it just uses an EMR-based technology, such as the Wacom-powered S Pen in the Samsung Note8. The Galaxy S8 already has sensors for accessories such as the S-View cases, so it's most likely just making use of that or a similar technology already in place in the device.

I would guess it's detected by continuously triggering portions of the capacitive touchscreen, since that is how it recognizes the keypresses. But presumably it detects it when its been snapped into place from the continuous contact around the edge of the physical keyboard attachment. Please don't quote me on that, because i am only speculating here. With such a low price tag, there cannot be anything particularly high tech about it's design, just some functionally practical & inexpensive engineering.
