Wait. "Budget" and "$279" shouldn't be in the same sentence. Not to mention it only has 3GB Ram and 32GB storage. Many budget tablets have at least 4GB Ram and 64GB storage that cost much less. This is a rip off. Avoid!

You are absolutely right. I have last year's tablet and have a 128gb memory card stuffed with movies. I torrent and sideload movie and sports streaming apps. I even play PSone games using an emulator. This tablet will be great for most people and you're not restricted like you are with Apple's locked down devices.

What's too bad is that the 8.4 form factor is great in vertical but why is the 8in tab market dead? It's a great size with lower weight than the 10 although the 5se is very light and thin.

These Samsung tablets are well optimised. 2gb of ram for a budget tablet does the job comfortably. They have higher end tablets if you want cutting edge performance

@@mdluk199 2GB ram does not make it a smooth tablet even with optimization. This is because how Android OS works and nothing Samsung can do about it. I do have Tab S3 and Tab S6 and have pretty good idea. Nobody is asking them to provide powerful SOC at this price but a bit more ram which increases user experience, navigation and app launch so much faster and smoother. Even super budget tablets like Fire HD 10 2019 edition bumped the ram size to 3GB from 2GB.

@@mdluk199 This spec is not even medium. The SOC is 2 years old and even perform worse than Mediatek SOC in Fire HD 10 2018 which is $150. Samsung needs to improve their mid range offerings as the difference between the mid range and high end are very big. Even Apple iPad basic version with A10 SOC, will literally obliterate it in performance.

Still waiting for Android 10 on my Tab S6 (due soon I think), but updates from Samsung suck on Tablets (Dec 2019 security patch) and this cost me over £800 with the keyboard! So the cheap and nasty low-end ones are hard to recommend but I am disappointed with the Tab S6 updates and not sure I will get Android 11.

As far as updates to the firmware with Samsung tablets go... My Motorola Xoom (2004) and my Note 10.1 (2012) both ended on the same version of Android. Samsung very much has the "Just buy a new one" approach to their devices aging.

I just bought an inexpensive Lenovo tab M8 FHD. Similar to the Samsung but no LTE, no usb c! Micro usb ugh. It works great around the house watching You Tube (speaker is loud) and reading, browsing, keeping track of lists and tasks. I have had iPads but just prefer Android. I too wish there was a good, small, Android tablet. A modern Nexus 7 would be great.

It's just sad how Android and related manufacturers have been completely ignoring the tablet market for years now... I still think this has at least some to do with the entire Chrome OS thing, Google worried that putting money on an Android tablet experience could end up cannibalizing their Chrome OS device sales. I've been using a Galaxy Tab S2 for years now. Easier to lug it around than a laptop, and it does most of what I need. I bought it a couple of years after it was out, so it was cheaper... but not by a whole lot. It's still running Android 7, and the last security update was from August last year... not great, but it's still working plenty well. I use it with a bluetooth keyboard, which is not great but functional enougj, and if there is one good thing I have to say about Samsung is that most of it's present and past flagships work wekk with screen streaming tech. I have a miracast dongle that pretty much only works well with this tablet. It does not work with my OnePlus smartphone for some reason (I tried everything). The Tab S2 also remains one of the lightest Samsung tablets... of all. Tab S3 was a tiny bit heavier. But yeah... I guess it's gonna be my last tablet too. If Android isn't going to improve things for the format anymore, I just can't justify an upgrade. More likely, get an USB Type C screen, a smartphone with HDMI over usb c, and live with that.

I agree, I made the same point of the most basic ipad being around 300 and it's so much more powerful than this that's around 300 as well. Don't care for the bigger screen but even with the bigger screen more power and batter consumption still much more powerful

How do you turn on the screen or wake the screen from sleeping without using the power button? I'm not found a way to do this yet and I read someone say something about you can use the Google Assistant to wake it by saying Hey Google but I don't know how to set that up yet. I'd appreciate some tips because always use the power button can wear it out quickly. Thanks.

Lon, sounds pretty honest. Samsung still has not entered the preformance 8-inch tablet market. No surprise there. But wow, they found a 1920x1200 pixel screen, only how many years late? Too bad about their own bad processor! Will the major Android tablet maker finally catches up. Might be worth checking in a few years to see if they've got a well rounded product. But I've been checking for years already.

How does this compare to the new Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus Tablet? I just got it but its soo slow, and I hate Fire OS. I put the Play store on it at least but I would really like a Good Android 8"ish tablet to watch netflix, plex and do a little gaming (simulators mostly), but Fortnite would be a plus.

Would a t-mobile version of this device allow use of only t-mobile sims or could one use mvno [ mobile virtual network operator ] sims that use t-mobile network, e.g. mintmobile and ultramobile? The price of the cheapest iPad with LTE capability is nearly $450 in the US I believe. Here in the UK and in Europe that difference will be even greater as Apple rip us off even more than they do Americans. I have a Fire hd 10 and Fire hd 8 along with last year's tab a 8 & 10 inch version. All tablets run smoothly with the exception of the Fire hd 8(although it's good for the price). For web browsing, KZbin and Netflix they are all fine - I'm typing on my galaxy tab a 8.0 now. I've got a good Samsung phone, Chromebook and average laptop which I hate because it's slow bloody windows. My tablets are for media consumption - I don't need masses of power. An iPad would be an expensive and limiting waste of money. On the tablet I'm on I have an 128gb memory card stuffed with movies and music. I can torrent on this thing and also sideload apps to watch live sports, TV and movies. You can't do any of that on a iPad plus the screen aspect ratio is abysmal for movies. This is a good everyday budget tablet and at a great size. Even though my 10inch tablets are better I always reach for this 8 inch one as it's great to handle and light. Also, as with all Samsung tablets if you wait about 3 months the price will come down at least 25%. Good buy in my opinion and I'd always take android over iOS.

@@phillippugh2161 Benchmarks, phones that offer a Exynos in some regions and Snapdragon in others. Exynos is slower, hotter and uses more battery. The latest Exynos has caught up in performance and battery life, but still runs hotter and the graphical performance is still significantly behind.

The xiaomi mi pad 4 (2018), in all fairness, are better in almost all aspects of this device despite being cheaper. Only gripe is that it doesn't have a english rom. Still it can be modded with one.

My point is that cost for performance...the Kindle fire is a very good tablet. My original point still stands as it relates to the video. Software optimization is why you see better performance on the iPad...one of Apple's strengths.

A Kindle Fire comes with so much bloatware it eats up your storage and slows the processor. I started to set it up when I noticed. So packed it up and sent it back the next day. It's really only good as an ereader imo.

Wow, I picked up an Amazon Fire 7, took a few minutes to install the Google Play APKs, and have a "basic" tablet for far less than what Samsung is asking. And I still have all of the Amazon services since I didn't have to "jailbreak" my Fire to also have Google Play.

@Jean Phil I know what my needs are and the Kindle Fire answers them without breaking the bank. I wanted a simple consumption device for ebook reading, web browsing and maybe a game or two, the Fire answers all of that at a fraction of the cost ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I never saw the need to overspend for a souped-up tablet that's overkill for my very simple needs so it would "look nice."

I just wasn't happy with my Fire 8. There's too much push from Amazon to use their services, and no support for widgets. Even using my own launcher is a struggle, because Amazon tries to uninstall it and force the default. That tablet made me feel like I was handcuffed to Jeff Bezos.

@AJ Walker I ordered a Kindle and didn't finish setting it up when I noticed all the bloatware eating up storage. It also wouldn't let me download the Nook app and I have 300+ books on that app. A B&N Samsung Nook or any Samsung device will allow you to download the Kindle app. I really like to read but won't be forced to only buy a Kindle book. 😠

Someone doesn't like Samsung products, ouch. Don't ask him to review the smp-200... yikes.. and yes it has a gps, every Samsung product i tried had one. My Samsung tablet and phone have one. apple tablets never have GPS in them. Samsung products usually get 2 android updates, my old Samsung tablet with android 7 (old stuff here) got updated to android 8 and then 9... for example. and my "old" smp-200 got the update from android 9 to android 10.. (Yes i know the very old android 10, I would love to get android 11 on it) Samsung products "like Nokia" get 2 major OS updates. Nokia is number 1 cell phone maker, Samsung is #2

It's an everyday tablet and a big step up from the Fire HD 8. For Netflix and web browsing it'll be good for at least 3 years or so. They have more powerful tablets if that's what you need.

Weak performance for the price. Android has always lacked in the tablet market except for the shield. I'm more in the Google-verse but recently bought a ipad mini 5 based on performance and form factor.

8" Android tablet market beyond ridiculously low res 1280x800 displays has basically dried up. Huawei Mediapad M5 8.4 isn't available anymore and Trump has killed off the 2019 Mediapad M6 8.4 (only available in China so far). Lenovo has unveiled the Tab M8 FHD with 1920x1200 resolution panel but it's hard to source in Europe and not available with LTE either. Guess the 8" formfactor isn't that popular after all?

There is an option for an 8" Android tablet with some preformance & 1920x1200 pixel screen. Check Xiaomi Mi Pad 4s. But be warned the company's MIUI & chinese apps are murder!

And the Lenovo only has Widevine DRM L3 so doesn't even support HD for Netflix and KZbin. Only 480p. Been looking for a mid level 8" tablet and there really isn't anything in the US. Don't want to risk the Huawei because might not have Play Store.
