A cool smartwatch but not a good fitness tracker. Glad to see that someone reviews the fitness aspect of the watches. Pretty rare on youtube.

Excellent review. I was looking into buying the Gear S2 as a fitness tracker, especially for weightlifting and sleep tracking. Thanks for saving me US$ 300.

Hi Eric, finally the s2 as fitness tracker review is here. Congrats buddy. Did you have a chance to compare the HR reading of the s2 with the chest trap? Is the s2 accurate? Cheers and keep the great working.
@TechyAgent9 жыл бұрын
Thanks, sorry the quality of the video was not so great, I was using a back up camera, and frankly I wasn't excited about shooting this video since the Samsung S2 was disappointing. That being said: yes, I think s2 is accurate capturing resting heart rate and your heart rate during cycling or jogging. For other exercises, like weightlifting, it won't be accurate. I did not compare to a chest strap, though.

I have external garmin chest strap HRM that is already paired with my S Health app. Is it possible to designate one HRM as the default over the other, that way I don't have to use the S2 HRM during my exercise?
@TechyAgent8 жыл бұрын
+Justin Brown I don't think so, unfortunately. The default is locked to using the onboard sensor.

It's shame the watch fails so badly on fitness tracking. I really like the smartwatch functionality and UI. Do you think it is a matter of just waiting on updates and new apps or do you think it is better to give up an look for something else?
@TechyAgent9 жыл бұрын
I think the hardware is potential he there, it just needs software (apps) that 1- can pair with Bluetooth chest straps, cadence sensors, etc and 2- apps that are mainstream and native to the device (like Strava, Jawbone, etc). So I think the potential is there, but in my opinion it will probably be a while before developers are fully on board with Tizen.

Tnx for review) It's really informative) I was looking for this particular device as an ultimate combination of smart-watch and fitness-tracker functionality and watched dozens of on topic videos, but only in this video you can really see what Gear S2 can really do about the fitness tracking. I was particularly interested in jogging without my Galaxy S5 'shovel' in the arm band. And now I see I cannot completely substitute my S5 with Gear S2 when jogging. And this is very sad... :'(
@TechyAgent9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Sorry that I was the bearer of bad news. The good news is that there are still a lot of fantastic fitness tracker options out there, you'll just have to wear something separate from your smart phone.
@markoffden9 жыл бұрын
So, as I understood, you basically can use it separate from the phone, but it not gonna track the map? As it shows on your video, back home it will sync all the rest of the data from the jogging session except the map. If it's so I think I will buy it
@markoffden9 жыл бұрын
...cause it's fast and still multifunctional... and also what can be best connected with samsung product than another samsung product
@TechyAgent9 жыл бұрын
That is correct. It will show all of your other metrics, just not the map. If you want to track GPS location, you'll have to bring your phone with you during the jog. So it's still something worth considering.
@surfseyed9 жыл бұрын
+markoffden You can check out the newer Gear S2 3g/lte. This model actually does have a built in GPS, as well as a sim card for phone/data while completely separated from your phone.

QUESTION: How customisable is the running/activity apps? My Garmin Fenix 3 HR displays A LOT of customisable stats on one or more screens/tabs right where i need them with a quick glance but all I see from the Gear S2 is a single stat for each screen/tab which isnt very helpful if you need to keep swiping back and forth between screens/tabs to see your stats like pace/heart rate/distance etc. Is the run app customisable or no? Thanks!
@TechyAgent8 жыл бұрын
+zerocool to be honest, I can't exactly remember how customizable the running and activity applications are since I no longer have my review unit, but I am familiar with the Fenix 3, and Garmin offers The ability to customize screens way more than any other brand. This is one of the things that sets Garmin apart from the competition.
@-zerocool-8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply, this is true, however I think the display technology and operating system is very 2005. Im a huge Samsung fan and the S3 should hopefully fit the bill. I'm going to get a Frontier anyway, compare them and keep the one I like best :)

Honestly, I don't find taking my phone a problem, because I want to be able to make or receive an emergency call when out. I have the Gear S2 Classic, which is a much more attractive watch, in my opinion, compared to the sports model, or even the Apple watch (I know there will be those that disagree on that). Since it doesn't have built in 3G like one the sports models, I need the phone. Plus, I listen to podcasts on my run, and there is no podcast app for Tizen, and my understanding is that the ones for Apple watch require the phone to be tethered. I can, however, control the play control of the podcast app, with the watch, so it works fine for that.

Great review, but I have GPS on my G2 Classic. I do not need my phone and it tracks my GPS, my Heart rate, and hooks up to Bluetooth headsets without you having your own phone. Just make sure it's the 4gLTE version. I received the watch free from AT&T by promo. When your watch disconnects Bluetooth from your phone it uses its own number . so no need for phone during workout. I would like to see a review on this watch with the GPS. This has exactly what I need stores music , no phone and much more. Thanks for the info.

Eric, thanks for all your reviews and feedback. So, if you would recommend one smartwatch/fitness tracker hybrid to purchase now, which would it be? The 3 priorities are that it has to be able to allow responses to Google Hangouts, All day and night calories burned tracker, and track calories burned during CrossFit metcons. Nice to haves are on board music, heart rate monitor, GPS and sleep tracking. Thanks again for your help!
@TechyAgent9 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, there aren't any (that I can think of) that meet all those requirements. The Garmin Vivoactive with its chest strap is my all time favorite, and would be able to do nearly all of the things that you require from it, with the exception of being able to respond to Google hangouts. However, you would be able to get notifications regarding Hangouts, you just won't be able to respond. As far as I know, it does track every other thing you mentioned, including calories, GPS, heart rate, and on board music controls. It's compatible with the iPhone and android, but you can only control the music with an android.

You can check out my review for the Garmin Vivoactive here on KZbin.

Head to head for my needs I prefer the orginal MS Band over the Vivoactive. It does basically everything the Vivoactive does plus has the heart rate monitor and now is half the price. I never found the MS Band as uncomfortable as most people. Still it has no on-board music player and can't respond to Hangouts. Thanks again!

I wanted to use this as a replacement for my Fitbit charge HR but unfortunately it can't do what the Fitbit used to do before it died on me... You think they'll have an update or something in the near futrue? thanks for the video :)
@TechyAgent8 жыл бұрын
+Abdulah S. AlAsiri I don't know if they will have an update in the near future or not. The Gear S2 is a good watch, it's just not going to be quite as capable as a designated fitness tracker like a Fitbit
@AbdulahAlasiri8 жыл бұрын
+Techy Agent Well I'm never going back to Fitbit again. It's just a mere disappointment. I'm looking at third party apps like "workout trainer" and "fit evolution" on the Galaxy store. I want the Gear S2 but I don't want to buy it and then find out it's useless. If you could review these two apps or write about them briefly in a reply that'd be great really. Thanks man.
@TechyAgent8 жыл бұрын
+Abdulah S. AlAsiri unfortunately, I've been very disappointed with all of the fitness applications I've seen in the galaxy/Samsung store. While most smart watches have done a decent job being both a smart watch and a fitness tracker, A designated fitness tracker is always going to beat a smart watch in terms of fitness tracking. If you are burned out on Fitbit, maybe consider something from Polar, Garmin, or Mio.

Are the steps accurate? and does it have a sleep monitoring?
@TechyAgent9 жыл бұрын
+Michael Padilla The steps are accurate, a little more than what showed up on my Apple Watch, but the Apple Watch could be wrong too, hard to tell. Out of about 4000 steps, they would only be about 300 steps apart, which is actually pretty good. The sleep monitoring isn't automatic. You have to manually log your times, so you don't even really need the watch for that, just S-Health installed on your phone.
