Samsung Microwave SE Error FIX!

My microwave gave me the SE error about 1 year into it being installed.
I tried everything I found on youtube and nothing worked.
It turned out the be the ribbon cable that was stuck together.

I cleared an SE problem on several occasions using the clean up the contacts procedures. On my last occasion cleaning the contacts worked up until I replaced the Key Panel back into its slotted position on the microwave, at which time it would seize and give the SE indication again. After four attempts my frustration level was growing pretty good. The panel would work up until I reinstalled it. Your procedure did the trick and prevented me from throwing the microwave out the window. Thanks much.

J J - Thank YOU! Our microwave had been splaying the SE error more and more frequently lately. I suspected something more complicated... I watched your video, and gave the pieces of paper a try... and IT WORKED!!! Since inserting paper between the two parts of the ribbon/cable and another between the cable and the microwave wall, NO SE ERRORS! AWESOME! Our sanity and peace of mind... Thanks for this post. Error SE fix. Isolated the power. Removed tin cover. Carefully pulled the ribbon plug back from the back of the keypad, pushed it home again. Fixed.

I have tried so many things to fix this error. This finally worked! Thank you :) I was worried about the paper in an electrical appliance so I appreciate the suggestion to use electrical tape.

Just like Steven below, your fix worked. I folded electric tape upon itself and inserted such instead of paper thinking that the tape would be less likely to combust in case there were any heat buildup; highly likely, but just a precaution. Most of the other videos I watched focused on disconnecting the ribbon connector, cleaning it, and the other wire connections and reinstalling them. I tried this, to no avail. Was just about to take apart the keypad given videos I watched saying that the touchpads get stuck. I am grateful for your fix. Thanks.

Thanks a lot buddy ! This fix absolutely works fine. I had the SE error on my Samsung microwave model CE73JD , I saw your video but I had still called the repair guys. They opened the microwave and said the circuit board needs replacement..and it would cost INR 1800. I said I will let them know and asked them to leave. I then used the ribbon cleaning method shown by you and it worked ! The bloody repair guys would have probably done the same and charged me a bomb saying that they have replaced the PCB. Hey that worked. I tried the other suggest on youtube, cleaning the cable connectors etc and I still had the SE error. I separated the ribbon cable like you suggested and put a piece of a business card between and it is working great now. Thanks!

Hey, thanks for the solution. That said, I used electrical tape to create the gap in between the ribbon cable, not paper. I would never recommend using paper in an electrical application, even if there is minimal voltage going to the keypad...

Wow.. I just can't believe this works... I've refrained from using the microwave that came with the house when we moved in as it kept showing that code and as I was informed that it would cost me 200$++ dollars to get it fixed by a local repair man. Fast forward a year and 8 months, I just woke up with an urge to get the thing fixed and stumbled upon this video. 5 minutes and done. This is ridiculous. THANK YOU. I did use a piece of electric tape that I folded instead of a piece of paper though. Felt a bit uneasy with the idea of leaving paper in the microwave's electrical board.

Thanks for this video. I pulled the board out and just sprayed both sides of the board with contact cleaner and nothing else, then reinstalled it and it works great now.

Who'd ever think of that!? That was my problem and the fix was easy. The ribbon was stuck together so I first separated the ribbons with a Q-tip stick. Then slid a couple pieces of paper in between the ribbons and that was it! Thanks a lot.

Skip all fixes; unplug and wait 10 minutes, plug in. FIXED! The 5E error code is a thermal switch that resets itself when cooled down. If it happens too often the small thermal switch can be purchased for a few $ , simple install. look for the small round thingy with two wires screwed on the bottom metal panel behind the control panel.

I bought this wave at a Goodwill and all the paper work was with it and the last individual had the same issue. They bought a new function display and had a repairman fix the issue, well it came back. All I did was take the cover off and cleaned the (green) ground wire from the 'power cord' its on top. Unscrew it and take a piece of sandpaper and clean the surface area on the ground connector (both sides) and the surface on the microwave on were it connects. Reason, the coating on the surface is corrosion resistive and blocks the flow of electrons (resistance) and they build-up and can't escape causing a dysfunctional error within the keypad. Hope this helps.

Just did this with paper like you said and it worked for now. Do you think electrical tape or similar material in between the ribbon wire might be safer though? I'm worried about paper becoming humid and sticky over time like the ribbon wire itself.

Hi Jeremy yeah you can try electrical tape that will probably work as well. The goal is to keep the tape seperate. I'm glad the fix worked!

I've got the same problems w/a Kenmore " below cabinet" model. That sucker is so sealed, I don't know where to start taking it apart! I would hate to pay for something I can do myself!

You put the piece of paper or electronic tape in between the ribbon cable to prevent it from sticking together. I hope this helps.

I wasn't sure what he meant either but when you inspect the ribbon, you will find that there are two ribbons that are stuck together. You need to pull them apart then put an insulator such is electrical tape (not paper) between them.

Do I use the copy / electric tape in replace of the ribbon, or place it in front or behind it, because it's not working?

Hi Mr. V, use electric tape. Cut a piece and fold it against each other (sticky side to sticky side) to crate a plastic strip. Slide it in between the ribbon cable to separate it and prevent it from sticking to each other. I hope this helps.

It is the ribbon cable. Slide a piece of paper between the folds of the cable where they are touching each other. Super easy. Super fast. Cheers!

Been having this problem off-and-on for years with Samsung. It is the ribbon cable touching itself. BE CAREFUL to separate it twice with cardboard: in the loop and when it enters the hole through from the keypad. I also put cardboard between it and the outside edge where it might touch the cabinet. WORKED, after spending hours cleaning and re-attaching cables. It's the keypad cable, Stupid!

@@jjthetechguy Yes it certainly gave me the confidence to open it up and give that fix a go. So I did - and Voila - the error code is now gone. But what I have noticed is that the pause/cancel button is also not working. So if you dial up a 2 minute cook and pull it out at 1 minute you can't cancel out that remaining minute. Only way to return to zero is to turn the power on and off at the wall. Looks like this MW is getting ready to be junked.

Hi Sherie, I'm sorry to say that i would not know the answer to that. I'm guessing the board will be behind the screen so if you feel confident in trying it before you call a tech there is that option. I wish you the best of luck and if you have any doubts I recommend that you contact Samsung support or an appliance technician :)

Sorry for the delayed response... The ribbon is behind the keypad assembly... Look for a video on how to remove it and be careful because there are electrical components back there... I hope this helps

ok, just did it differently. the ribbon is obviously composed of a row of wires. there is a contact point & my guess is that a spot has worned out. i simply inserted & removed it several times while getting the ribbon going in correctly & as far as it would go. working for now.

None that I can think of. I ended up replacing mine with another Samsung last year. When I performed the fix it worked for me for years. I had the microwave for 9 years before I had to replace it.

You do realise when it comes to microwaves there is nothing exclusive to them. They just put their branding on an existing appliance. Identical to a dozen or more major brand names in the game. It aint TV's or cell-phones. It doesn't have a bendable OLED screen. It's the same crap that everybody dishes out.

The problem is a bad contact on the ribbon connector and its socket. Remove the ribbon cable. Spray with a "contact cleaner" and all will be fine. 3 minute fix forever.
