Samsung NX10 vs Panasonic GF1 vs Olympus E-PL1 Review

With the recent release of the Samsung NX10(bit.ly/SamNX10), we take a look to see how it compares with two other mirror-less interchangeable cameras - the Panasonic GF1(bit.ly/PanaGF1) and the Olympus E-PL1(bit.ly/E-PL1Kit). Kai gets set the task to give a video tour of Hong Kong to test the autofocus, image stabilisation and AUTO capabilities of each camera.

I got a second hand gf-1 with the standard zoom and eye-level viewfinder for €225. I paid another €225 for the telezoom which gives me a focal length range from 35mm equivalent of 28 to 400mm. I got this setup for my upcoming trip to Australia and New Zealand not wanting to drag my dslr gear around with me with weight restrictions on the plane. For the price of one mediocre Nikon lens I have all the gear I could want for traveling. I could not be happier. The camera came without a manual but I quickly got the hang of it and I am totally chuffed with the pictures it gives me. No macro but i rarely need macro when taking pictures of mountains or buildings. A great camera, great lenses and all extremely portable.

Thanks for a great comparison. I'm thinking of getting into the M4/3 market and debating between the E-P1, E-PL1, and the GF1. I want something relatively versatile and the faster autofocus of the GF1 is certainly appealing.

@MedicAlv1 E-PL1, Canon G12 is just a compact with a small sensor and no lens to switch. Canon and Nikon are behind panasonic, olympus, samsung and even sony. Photography took another direction that they lost a few years back.

@kurai6 YES ! You can not compare micro 4/3 with any compact, as they really can match any dslr, in image quality, while being small and easy to carry.

Kai - you need to have a more clearer winner on your comparison reviews - like the categories you mentioned - give us at least a winner in them - your summary is ok as something for everyone in each - you only stated the Pen was slowest in auto focus - but don't take me wrong - always nice to hear your reviews - keep them coming

Awesome 3-way review + Hong Kong tour! I must argue that HK at night hardly qualifies as a real low light test. I think the buildings illuminating the city at night put out more lumens per square inch than you could get during the overcast daylight portion of the test...(joking). That smog rolling in from mainland China was looking pretty thick. So, your suggestion is to buy all 3 cameras? Ha, keep these great videos coming.

Notice the colors on the GF1 are much more drab compared to the E-PL1. I prefer better color over autofocus speed.

@kurai6 If by that you mean enthusiast level digital cameras such as the G12? I'd say yes because micro four thirds sensors are bigger, thus, less noise and better quality in low light conditions. Also the auto focus on the G3, GF3, and E-P3, are blinding fast. So fast in fact that I was surprised it was even happening when I saw the G3 in a shop the other day.

I think I'm going to buy the olympus... But I did like the style of the samsung. I remember there were more mirrorless cameras that looked like a dslr, only 5 times smaller (litteraly), 2 or 3 years ago. I really loved those, but can't seem to find any of them?

am interested in wildlife photography at the moment I have the Olympus FE-340 which is a small compact camera. I have never had SLRs before. Would you say that the Olympus PEN EPL-1 is good for my needs. My budget is around £500s. What offer cameras do you suggest I look at.? I do like Olympus my first camera wasone of those thick and bulky Olympus Olympus mju 300. Which I still have now. I quiet like Olympus's easy to use icons. I am open to different makes.

I'm thinking of a gf1. Here's the two lens combinations i'm thinking of: 1. 20mm 1.7 + 14-45mm zoom OR 2. 20mm 1.7 + 14mm 2.5 . Which one would you guys choose? I don't really zoom in to telephoto much in my point and shoot (want to get away from the auto world to manual), but i haven't really had much experience with DSLR/micro 4/3. so dunno if 20mm (i guess that's 40mm equivalent) max will be enough. anyone know of any other small/"pancake" fixed focal length lens for micro 4/3 beyond 20mm?

@SicWunz Yes, that might be true, but something makes me thing that Nikon or Canon can not compete with micro 4/3 right now and they will never be at a competent level. I guess they lost the edge, these days, selling the same old stuff that soon fewer will want. After I played with a micro 4/3 I understand that this system is quite good, actually, better suited for traveling and discrete photography than any dslr.

Hi, have you tried "photo SFX art" (just do a Google search for it...)? There you will find a good free video explaining the way to take amazing pictures. It made it easier for Matt to take photos which have that jaw-dropping-effect any time you take a look at them. Perhaps it will work for you too.
