So cool to see you still answering comments! I can see that you've touched upon the VA glow (bluish, silver glow) in your written review but mostly you were saying its toward the bottom of the screen. I have that glow going towards the sides of the screen and no amount of shiting my viewing position completely gets rid of it. I can somewhat see it in your review, but I'm not sure that it's something that comes with VA technology, specifics of having a curved screen (this is my first curved VA screen, I've only used flat TN's before) or my brain just playing with me. Do you notice that as well? Also, do you think it would be hard for a noob to calibrate this monitor by themselves? I've found a service that rents calibration devices out and from what I can see reviewers generally state that factory calibration is kind of weak.
@PCMonitors
@PCMonitors Жыл бұрын
Depending on your viewing distance you certainly could see 'VA glow' towards the edges, yes. You may have additional uniformity issues on your unit that brings it out a bit more strongly there as well - these curved VA models are not known for great uniformity. The gamma and white point is certainly 'off' out the box so having the monitor profiled with a colorimeter could help. It would be straightforward and if nothing else the device should help you determine the best colour channel adjustments to make for your unit.

The man, the Man, the Real Man, the Legend! Thanks a lot for such detailed reviews! I am a hopeless nitpicker so i really appreciate your job! I bought a m32u after this review... Not sure i was right and about to try to look at this one in person and maybe chage my mind (not did this before because i'm too lazy))) but i think that viewing angles and color consistency is more important than deep black (especially that i find it useful only in movies, but irritating in games due to lack of details in dark places, since plasma tv times), left alone this aggressive curve if you (like me) tend to change your sitting position and sit close to the monitor.

What a great channel and review. Saw you do this stuff since 10 years. Well done! Only thing i would like is a nits number on the sun scene in battlefield for better comparision 44:18 . I wonder if highlights under brightscreen can manage a number above 500 nits. According do rtings it can only do close to 400 when the whole screen is bright. I may keep my Acer x27 then as i want my display upgrade to be 100% worth it. However my 4090 would like 240 hz on more competetive games quite alot.

Glad you appreciate it and that's a great suggestion. As it happens we do now measure both the sun on the waterfall scene in SOTTR and the mountain sun in BFV (example - pcmonitors.info/reviews/acer-predator-x32-fp/#Contrast_and_brightness ). I didn't measure the mountain sun in this case, but it was clear that the screen had ABL kicking in at that point as mentioned in the review. By eye I'd say it would probably be quite close to 500 nits. So not as bright as the monitor can get but not super dim - better than OLEDs in that scene.

Thanks for the very detailed review! I should get mine tomorrow. Funny I always liked IPS but currently I have a TN main with a VA secondary, and will shift to two VAs. I'd love an OLED but I'll be using it for work too and the burn-in is a deal breaker tbh. I wanted a monitor that would give a better HDR experience than my current XG27U, that I'd be happy to stick with until MicroLED rolls around - hoping this is the one!

I've been hunting for one of these for 8 months after returning the Neo G8 and I finally pulled the trigger. £660 for an open box - not used one on the official Samsung eBay. Should be arriving in a few days, if everything is fine with it, no dead pixels etc I'll be thrilled at that price! I really did love the Neo G8 (coming from the Gigabyte AD27QD 1440p 144hz) but it had far too many issues that I was not willing to spend £1000 for... Neo G7, please be perfect for me

Awesome review, really in-depth with lots of real-world examples! The only thing missing from this review is a PQ EOTF graph for the HDR section. It seems like this monitor is tracking brighter shades brighter than reference. While the results from HWUB and TFTCentral's reviews don't look too bad, the graph from rtings is really awful: If the source demands 90 nits, the measured brightness of this monitor was 250 nits, which should mean that this monitor greatly over-brightens content, not delivering an accurate image at all.
@PCMonitors
@PCMonitors 2 жыл бұрын
I certainly review in a different way - more subjective assessment for things like that or as somebody on my forum neatly described: an "analogue" rather than "digital" approach. It seems this model has quite different tuning depending on firmware and possibly country revision, but I didn't find highlights blown out or shades that should be dimmer inappropriately bright on my unit.

If it's reaching the maximum refresh rate consistently, the monitor isn't in a VRR environment and its refresh rate will be 165Hz. If it's fluctuating just slightly from that (say 160 - 165Hz) it shouldn't introduce obvious flickering, either. It's larger fluctuations that are the main issue.

@@PCMonitors I see thank you so much and one last question please, the reason i am thinking of upgrading to this monitor is because right now i have an rtx 4080 super with a 4k 60hz screen and if i have vsync on the GPU is not running at 100 percent capacity and i think that is what is causing stutters as when its locked at 60 sometimes it drops to the 50s while with vsync off the FPS can be over 100 with no stutter but i get tearing, so if i get this monitor i am hoping that the GPU will always be running at 100 percent capacity as it will never reach 165 FPS so that should stop game stuttering, is this logic reasonable to you/would that be a good reason to get the monitor, again thank you so much for your help.
@PCMonitors
@PCMonitors 8 ай бұрын
I think the extra headroom of the 165Hz Samsung would be useful in that case, yes. Sometimes constraining the GPU like that can offload too much to other areas (like the CPU) and cause 'hitching' or stuttering type issues.

Hey there, thanks for the review of this Neo G7 monitor. What are the dimensions of the two-leg stands of this monitor? I can't find this information anywhere :(
@PCMonitors
@PCMonitors Жыл бұрын
I can tell you the depth as that's the main thing people are interested in (the stand is less wide than the monitor itself). From the written review (pcmonitors.info/reviews/samsung-odyssey-neo-g7-s32bg75/#Features_and_aesthetics ) : "The total depth of the monitor including stand is ~311mm (12.24 inches) with the centre of the screen ~7.5mm (3.00 inches) back from the frontmost point of the stand." I can estimate based on the monitor width of 713mm (28.07 inches) that the stand is perhaps ~640mm (~25 inches) wide.

Hey! I have this monitor. I've been using HDMI (pc gaming, using an rtx 4080 super) because in NVCP with this monitor one can find a 12-bit color option. Is there any actual real world benefit to this? I read somewhere it's just a thing required by the hdmi 2.1 standard and doesn't provide any real world benefit as panels don't support it. I recall reading samsung advertising 12-bit with blacks/near blacks though? What are your thoughts?

how close to OLED this monitor is coming in your opinion? i mean its a mini led monitor and so it has the advantage of not getting burn in! so i might consider it over an OLED even when i love the infinite contrast of Oled..
@PCMonitors
@PCMonitors 2 жыл бұрын
I draw some comparisons in the review, particularly with respect to HDR. Colour quality is nowhere close to OLED and pixel responsiveness is weaker. OLEDs have millions of dimming zones whereas this has 1196. This monitor can sustain higher brightness levels than OLED and as you state you don't have image retention or burn-in concerns. For some scenes the OLED would have an edge, there are other scenes where it would be difficult to notice much difference and others where the Samsung provides superior output due to its higher sustained brightness. And there's no directly comparable OLED on the market, so this remains a unique experience (hence the video title 😉 ).
@SonGoku544
@SonGoku544 2 жыл бұрын
@@PCMonitors ok thanks for the quick detailed answer, just curious what exactly do you mean with the better color quality on Oled? in what way? in terms of vibrancy too?
@PCMonitors
@PCMonitors 2 жыл бұрын
Part of it comes down to colour consistency, which is explored in the 'Colour reproduction' section of the review. I'd also recommend reading that section of the written review if you haven't already as it reinforces this concept and associated weaknesses - pcmonitors.info/reviews/samsung-odyssey-neo-g7-s32bg75/#Colour_reproduction. The weaknesses in colour consistency (saturation losses and dulling peripherally compared to the centre) plus the colour gamut being somewhat less impressive than 'competing' OLED models does indeed affect vibrancy. It isn't as if the Samsung appears 'washed out', as explored in the review, but there is still a difference in this respect.

Have you reviewed the Neo g8 by any chance stuck between the two for ps5 some are saying g8 is brighter and responsive more compare to g7 ur thoughts ?
@PCMonitors
@PCMonitors Жыл бұрын
I don't think it's brighter, or not in a meaningful way for most people. It may or not not be marginally brighter, it's within sample tolerance from the results I've seen, and both models are bright enough even not set anywhere near maximum SDR brightness. The 120Hz performance is similar enough that you're unlikely to notice a difference there and the Neo G7 has a nicer screen surface in my view (lighter matte). The only real benefit of the Neo G8 in my book is its 240Hz capability, but that also comes with significant static 'interlace pattern artifacts'. This is not relevant on the PS5 as you're stuck at 120Hz and frankly the Neo G8 would be a waste of money over the G7. Apples and oranges really. The M32U is the 'safer' choice, with it being flat and not having the additional quirks of the Samsung which are highlighted in the review. It is a monitor we recommend - pcmonitors.info/recommendations/gaming-monitors/. Having said that, the contrast and HDR performance is certainly much better on the Samsung - just depends how much you value that over the more consistent experience of the Gigabyte. The Gigabyte should be significantly cheaper, too.

So is this gaming monitor likely popular to get by any chance? Is the neo g7 better then neo g8? Cause I don't want to be disappointed again after getting two different gaming monitor!! Well at least it's support vrr for lots of upcoming PS5 games!!! ;P

Sound is not my area, so you'd have to go by reviews on Amazon and other KZbinrs. ALLM very simply tells a TV to switch to a 'gaming' mode or similar preset when it detects a compatible HDMI 2.1 device. Nothing fancy and not necessary on a monitor since presets aren't typically tied to input lag levels. If you like what you see in the review (which will give you the best idea of what to expect from the monitor, short of using it yourself) then go for it. I'm not a fan of the Neo G8 because it has heavy static 'interlace pattern' artifacting at higher refresh rates.

@PCMonitors
@PCMonitors 2 жыл бұрын
Yup, it definitely changes shade brightness and representation. But it's very content-dependent and depending on the gamma test you use (or what is actually being shown on the monitor at any given time) the gamma won't always be like that. You should notice visibility on Lagom's black level test is better than you would expect for a gamma of '2.5' or '2.7'. Local dimming on monitors is never good for accurate output, it definitely causes odd inconsistencies.

There are some alternatives to consider here - pcmonitors.info/articles/best-gaming-monitors/. If you want a monitor that's more likely to be free from problems, you should generally go for something "simpler" than the Samsung (i.e. for example, wthout a Mini LED backlight).

Samsung G8/G7 Neo has around 76% Rec 2020, Asus 32UQX has 82%, and Alienware AW3423 has 80%. The difference of less than 10% is barely noticeable (according to RTings). However, the ASUS 32UXQ reproduces the green color more saturated and it has more than 1200 nits at full window size (it influences the color reproduction), which is true, while the Samsung G8/G7 Neo reproduces the blue color more saturated (not in every case). It's a matter of preference, I suppose, whether you prefer to see the grass greener or the sky bluer. The exact color reproduction in games I suppose is not that important, as long as it's not terribly off.
@PCMonitors
@PCMonitors Жыл бұрын
RTINGS is a great resource with a lot of useful data, don't get me wrong. But looking at percentages can be misleading and such an absolute statement as "10% is barely noticeable" is frankly nonsense or attempted oversimplification. Sometimes trying to wrap things up into neat little figures and give absolutes where things aren't so black and white (so to speak) can mislead. It depends where the coverage is lacking - if it's clustered around one region of the gamut or if it's more evenly spread. For the green to blue edges the differences are significant - which is why for the Neo G7 I measured 84% Adobe RGB whereas I measured 94% Adobe RGB for the AW3423DW (plus significant extra red coverage) and 100% Adobe RGB coverage for the PG32UQX. That includes cyans, which encompasses "sky blue" as well! Furthermore, the VA panels have weaker perceived saturation peripherally as explored in the review but unfortunately not touched upon by most reviewers as their measurement instruments don't tell them such things. That's why I like to draw subjective comparisons in the reviews as well - and that included actual comparative testing in specific scenes with the AW3423DW and Neo G7 side by side in this case. There was a definite difference in vibrancy here, clear to me when gaming, as noted in the review. But everybody will have a different sensitivity to that and I certainly wouldn't describe the Neo G7 as "washed out" or anything close to that.
@socialreport999
@socialreport999 Жыл бұрын
@@PCMonitors I wrote about games. They aren't developed using AdobeRGB, but if you started talking about AdobeRGB, the 32UQX is more precise for the green and blue colors, it's true. However, the 32UQX cannot cover AdobeRGB accurately for the red color; it shows it as oversaturated. In that case, the Samsung G7/G8 Neo will display the green color as oversaturated compared to the 32UQX. In AW3423 the red is even more saturated than in 32UQX, the blue is similar but the green isn't that good. In some cases, the Samsung G7/G8 Neo will show a more vivid red than the AW3423 when the brightness in that spot is higher compared to QD-OLED (you mentioned these cases in another video). The AW3423 cannot reproduce very high brightness. I'm not sure if curved VA panels have weaker perceived saturation peripherally. Maybe you were sitting too far from the display? If you were sitting around 0.8 meters or closer, would it be fine? Next time, you can compare not only the red and green colors but also the blue. A difference of less than 10% is obviously barely noticeable for evenly spread colors at the same brightness (I saw the comparison myself, it's true that it works like this). It is apparent from the context of my previous comment. You chose games that predominantly display green and red colors, which is obvious. Try selecting a game with a significant blue color presence as well. In that case, the G7/G8 will perform better. Although blue is not as widely used as green and red, it can be more prominent in certain games, I suppose (maybe in Cyberpunk, I'm not sure if they predominantly used the most saturated blue in it.).
@PCMonitors
@PCMonitors Жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter if games are developed for Adobe RGB or not. The colour gamut still dictates the peaks of saturation and vibrancy you experience, as explored in some detail in our reviews. This is not about accuracy or using the gamut appropriately, it's about vibrancy - the two are not the same! I also play a wide variety of games and observe a broad range of scenes within games. Furthermore, I use the monitors extensively for productivity as well as watching video content. My testing is extremely broad and thorough and it reveals the differences between the monitors very effectively. Including a lot of aspects other reviewers simply miss and users who buy these monitors are often thankful at least somebody is pointing out to them. I would highly recommend you read the written reviews as it helps reinforce some of the points made in the video reviews and explores some of these aspects in more detail. You also need to separate the concepts of colour gamut and colour volume. The former does not depend on brightness, whereas with the latter it is a factor. Monitors can show strong saturation at low to moderate brightness levels. Depending on visual sensitivity to brightness the depth and vibrancy (and perceived saturation) is still strong there. Higher brightness levels can certainly add extra 'pop' simply due to the higher brightness - but the colour gamut is not affected by that. The AW3423DW most certainly can provide high brightness in some scenes or for some elements, superior in some cases (smaller bright highlights) to the Odyssey Neo G7. And it doesn't need to dark-bias as it isn't constrained by 'dimming zones'. If you have a model with reduced colour gamut and high vibrancy or if you consider a WOLED monitor which has a reduced colour volume as brightness increases (i.e. saturation is reduced if brightness is high), adding extra brightness does not improve vibrancy and can actually hinder it in some cases. As for weaker saturation peripherally, it occurs at 0.8cm (or closer). In fact it's even illustrated visually from around that distance in the SpyderCHECKR 24 section of the review - pcmonitors.info/reviews/samsung-odyssey-neo-g7-s32bg75/#Colour_reproduction. If you sit further away and keep your head central these shifts will eventually disappear. So you seem to have that backwards regarding viewing distance - closer makes the issue more pronounced. This is explained in the review so I shouldn't really have to repeat myself here.
@socialreport999

@@PCMonitors OK. Maybe you had a defective panel because I don't have those issues on my curved VA (or at least not so noticeably and it's not G8/G7 Neo). Do other curved VA panels have the same issues? It's a fact that the Samsung G7/G8 have more saturated blue than the 32UQX or AW3423. You can verify this by looking at Color Gamuts yourself, if you don't believe it. In any case, I'm very interested in your reviews, no question. You cover a lot of interesting points. Please, choose a game with a predominant blue color as well.
@PCMonitors
@PCMonitors Жыл бұрын
Different people have different colour perception and sensitivity, but I can tell you it most certainly is an issue on all VA models. And some people (such as me) do notice this readily. I don't just make things up in the reviews, but you need to understand that things I notice and comment on aren't necessarily going to be things you notice so readily. And yes, the Neo G7 does show strong pure blues and also pink shades, but when you were referring to 'sky blues' earlier they're not in that region of the gamut. You might also notice I often state royal blue for Lagom appears consistent - even on VA models. So it's able to maintain that vibrancy well across the screen. I did observe this in some scenes, but I see I didn't specifically comment on impressive vibrant blues in the review so I apologise for that. Will try to work in some examples of such shades in future reviews of similar VA models. :)

Hi I would like to ask if the boot screen of Windows is also streched from low res on your Neo G7? For me the monitor shows 1440p120Hz but obviously streched form a 4:3 display... If switch to DP1.1 or HDMI1.4 the boot screen is in 2160p no streching but only 30Hz (as we know it reaches the limit of DP1.1 and HDMI1.4)
@PCMonitors
@PCMonitors 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how the boot screen decides which resolution to use, but I've observed this sort of thing on various monitors and it isn't something to worry about. It just depends how resolutions are ordered and listed on the EDID of the screen and doesn't affect normal function when you're in Windows and the desired resolution and refresh rate is selected.

People are more vocal when complaining and more eager to share disappointment than praise things. Such is human psychology and that applies to both the X32 FP and Neo G7. I completely disagree that the X32 FP is a "flop" and they're actively improving its firmware to make it a bit more user friendly with respect to the OSD. The most comprehensive and useful resource for user feedback (positive and negative) is actually my own forum - forum.pcmonitors.info/topic/some-thoughts-on-acer-x32-fp-local-dimming-and-screen-surface/. It offers superior vibrancy to the LG, a more balanced spectrum which some will find visually more comfortable and superior static contrast. And it's vastly superior for darker shade representation ('depth and atmosphere') under HDR or SDR using local dimming. The high refresh rate responsiveness is also strong - it's really a superior product in some respects to the LG, though it's still a monitor some will really like and others won't depending on preferences. US pricing is also much more attractive than its EU pricing. Either way, if you're not interested in HDR I think the LG is a decent offering for the price.

Those consoles will give a very similar experience to what we showed using a PC (they're basically just mid-range AMD-based PCs) but limited to 120Hz. So yes, a nice contrast experience in particular for SDR and HDR. For office usage it's a nice size and resolution, but the curve is very subjective and potentially annoying for such uses. We'll shortly be reviewing a flat IPS alternative (Acer X32 FP) which could be more suited if you don't want a curve or value stronger colour vibrancy - pcmonitors.info/acer/acer-x32-fp-160hz-4k-ips-with-576-zone-mini-led-backlight/.

@@PCMonitors How much of a difference in actual content does going from ~500 zones to ~1000 make, in your opinion?
@PCMonitors
@PCMonitors 2 жыл бұрын
Zone count is only part of the equation. There are different panel types in this case and the dimming algorithm is also important. I'd expect more 'haloing' or 'blooming' (though still not an extreme amount of this, from early test data I've seen) but superior brightness output even where bright shades dominate. So the Samsung Odyssey Neo G7 is a unique product and as per the video title, gives "A Unique Experience". I should also add the Odyssey Neo G7 I reviewed was a random retail sample and had no QC concerns of note. I appreciate this is just one sample, but people are often more vocal when it comes to complaining about issues vs. praising a product like this and it can give you a skewed idea of how many units actually have QC issues.
