Never seen a video a long time ago saying that it just sent the same signals that the credit card send when they're the type that you can just tap on the reader. So there's no reason that your phone shouldn't work which makes me wonder how apple is doing it if there's doesn't work all the time.
@minogoda6 жыл бұрын
Samsung pay MST technology cycles through multiple magnetic signals that are different cause not all readers detect the same signal. U can literally hear the different sounds coming from the back of the phone. Some times the first few signals aren't what the reader is used to so it gives you an error, until the correct one is sent then it goes through.
@2020TechOfficial6 жыл бұрын
I get those errors a lot. I wasn't quite sure exactly what it was doing, I knew it was sending out the signal in pulses of some sort. Thanks for the insight there!

I find that hard to believe. Mag strips don't just change to adjust to different readers. Why would the Samsung phone need to? What's more likely is the card reader detects only part of the signal. So the phone cycles the same signal again.

Very interesting. Wonder if I'm not timing the touch with the pulse that Walmart recognizes and that's why I can't ever get it to work at Walmarts I've tried at. Also, anyone know if certain phone cases cause it to work less effectively?

It does work at Wendy’s and other places with similar registers - I just tend to reach to the card reader without asking; otherwise, people tend to say “no” and don’t even let me try. I did that once at Mad Greens, it was funny because the employee was iffy about letting me try, and when it worked he didn’t know if a payment actually went through, so there were like 3 of them around the register trying to figure out what dark magic I had used. ...with that said, I have an iPhone now, and Samsung Pay is one of the top reasons I miss my Galaxy phone.

@aba7920006 жыл бұрын
Carlos Peralta That’s set to change soon, though. Not only because merchants are gradually switching from those magnetic stripe only registers like the one at Wendys to chip and nfc terminals, but because the card payment networks are already in the process of switching the authentication method from signature to PIN for all card payments (previously PIN was only for debit cards). When a PIN is required, a place like Wendy’s will no longer be able to process any card payments unless they upgrade their system. And the same goes for sit down restaurants: once PIN authentication is in place, there will be no more taking the card away from the customers. They will have to use wireless terminals and process the payments right at the table.

@@2020TechOfficial In my experience, NFC is hit and miss. It's like they have to explicitly advertise that they support Samsung Pay, for it to work via NFC. This is also true for Apple Pay and Google Pay when it comes to NFC. It's why I prefer Samsung pay/MST over NFC-based mobile payment for now.

Thank you for emulating an extensive, everyday experience using SamsungPay in your video! Others have displayed a couple examples, but you encountered a bunch of the hurdles people often encounter. I have a few things to add. 1. The gas pump, insert card readers will often work, but they require perfect timing. I noticed when you inserted your MoviePass card, you inserted it with the stripe at the top. Oftentimes those readers will read a stripe no matter if the stripe is right-facing or left-facing. You want to turn the card upside down so the magnetic stripe will not come in contact with the reader, in the case that it is a multi-sided reader. Always insert the card and pull it out quickly. You had the right idea by activating SamsungPay before inserting your MoviePass card. You're essentially tripping a sensor so the reader begins "looking" for a magnetic signature. Unfortunately, the timeframe in which the reader actives and searches for that signature is very short, so timing and phone placement is KEY. As a backup to doing this tricky method, where you don't have your physical card, you always have the option of going into the gas station. The cashier can preauthorize an amount for your pump and you can use your phone to pay at the terminal inside. 2. Many people don't think of using SamsungPay where they wouldn't traditionally be in proximity to a terminal, namely sit-down restaurants. I will always ask the server if they've tried SamsungPay. Usually it's a no. Most of the time they are pretty receptive with allowing me to walk with them to the terminal where I get to try it. Always explaining for them to do exactly what they would do before sliding a card, which is them hitting [credit] or [Visa, MasterCard, etc] then hold my phone up to the magnetic reader. However, sometimes you will get resistance. This is where you have to decide how pushy you want to be, from the awkwardness in some of the situations you encountered in the video, I'm thinking you don't like to push too hard. I'll go as far as telling them that I don't have my regular credit card, forcing them to let me try. Although this isn't smart if you are at a fast food restaurant that hasn't served you yet. But definitely gives you power if you've already consumed your meal at a sit-down restuarant. I've actually had a restaurant so adamant on not letting me at least try SamsungPay, that they ended up comping my meal, allowing me to leave without paying. I followed up with an email to restaurant management telling them that I would be more than happy to come back and pay [with my phone]. Never heard back! My point being, many more places than people imagine can accept SamsungPay, but I think it's up to the consumer to push for change. And it's also up to us trailblazers to educate merchants at every chance we get. Very important to explain the difference between NFC and MST, in my opinion, since that is why SamsungPay works where the others won't. Another important thing is to not be too confident that it will work when convincing them to try, because you don't want egg on your face for the few times that it doesn't work. I still always keep my traditional card on me, along with some cash. But I don't let them know that upfront. In your case with that 1 Wendy's visit, I would go there a few times and you'll eventually find a cashier that will let you try it. When you find that one cashier that will let you use it, try to get a manager afterward to be a witness to it if it worked. One successful transaction could get talked about where it would change how receptive a particular business location proceeds with future transactions. Thanks again for this video! You are definitely doing a great service with making this technology more known.

You can use Samsung Pay at gas stations if you pay inside. Most fast-food places can take it, BUT you have to ask them to hold the credit card reader out the window. Also, even though most can't take Apple Pay, they give them credit for Samsung Pay purchases.

@@2020TechOfficial You don't have to pay inside. You can pay outside at a gas station if you jury rig it. I've been doing it at Costco. Samsung Pay will work at gas station pumps if you insert a card and hold your phone as close to the reader as you can. There is a mechanical lever that is tripped when the card is inserted causing the reader to read the card but you need to make sure and insert the upside down so it doesn’t read the card itself. This doesn’t work at every gas station but for me it works at 99 % of them.

Hardee's card reader is old school it does not support tap and pay. It's the Beauty of MST. that's what's makes Samsung pay work more success than Apple pay. MST mimics the magnetic strip so it can work on older readers. Nfc is the tap and pay feature like when some tries to steal something from the store and the alarm beeps. Best way I found is hold the phone sideways(Back of the phone like a card) to the side of ALL card readers where you swipe your plastic card. AND don't have a metal plate in your phone case that you use for your magnetic mounts, same goes for wireless charging.

I have been using Google and Samsung pay from the start. over the years Samsung pay has been the best as it uses NFC and MST. it was a very smart move that Samsung acquired LoopPay. it's been very fun to use and to see people give me funny looks. but people are starting to understand now. the biggest thing that gets me is the lack of knowledge of not just the frontline folks but management snd supervisors. and some of the general confusion over it. it was understandable at first but it's been a few years now and I still get it. Also, I have started to call corporate offices abut it and also complane about them not using the chip readers.
@kaseyboles306 жыл бұрын
Chip and pen isn't 100% security, but it's miles ahead of everything else right now. The only weakness so far the only hole requires both special equipment to partially clone the target card (some of the data on the chip cannot be copied) and modifying the clone, then you have to find a chip reader that allows offline payment and is currently in offline mode (mostly rural places). Even then there is likely a rather small upper limit for such transactions and when the reader goes online the transaction won't verify and the bank will be alerted. Not really worth if for a few bucks worth of stuff at some gas station in the middle of nowhere. The problem with phone/watch based systems is they can all run other software. One piece of malicious software can cause the payment software to issue a token without any user notification or interaction and relay it to an attacker. And with BlueJacking techniques it's possible for others to install such software without user co-operation (not hard to get, one lady kept downloading the same infected emoji software despite my telling her it was the cause of her issues). Blue Borne and other new such software doesn't require the target bluetooth system to be broadcasting, just on. And blue tooth has more range than most believe. Laptops typically use the middle ranged level bluetooth which can reach over 30 feet stock. long range blue tooth is well over 300.The latest version of this even has the phone's nfc system reading any contactless cc's in range and using those. And of course magstripe has zero inherent security (thus cvv codes, and all those questions such a zip code that is now being asked for at various terminals).

I'm also noticing more gas stations installing the touchless scanners on their pumps to be able to accept mobile payment and also quite possibly their own rewards card/Speedpass thingys. The Sunoco near my house has those on their pumps. It doesn't appear to give you Samsung Pay points for using, but definitely helpful in a pinch.

I have also gone into those gas stations with convenience stores attached and used Samsung Pay on the readers to pay for my gas (using Pay Inside option). Again, this isn't everywhere obviously but another little trick to use Samsung Pay when you don't have a card.

I was on a road trip this summer and saw 1 Shell station with an NFC reader at the pump. It was disabled but they had a sign posed at the NFC readers on the pumps saying "Tap to Pay coming soon!" Unfortunately all the local Shell stations here here recently upgraded their pumps with the type of card reader like you encountered in the video (the silver one where you have to insert it into because it does support chip tech cards, but they still prompt you to enter your zip code when you use a chip card). Interestingly the other day I noticed at the gas station at my local Costco they now have NFC readers on the pumps. I haven't tried it out yet. Sadly one local Sheetz used to have NFC readers on their gas pumps several years ago but they removed them after just 1 year (I suspect they were older NFC readers that were not really designed for outdoor use and got broken with extreme temperatures and moisture issues from rain/snow).

In Malaysia most of the place no matter convenient stores, hypermarkets and fast food restaurant they don't know what is Samsung Pay and mostly their credit card machines doesn't support NFC function. You have to remember that a lot of banks don't replace their cash machines right away when new tech comes out, they replace as the old ones WEAR out which can take a couple of years in the case of bank machines. The only now are replacing credit card readers with the newer generation chip & pin, nfc readers but the employees may not have been TRAINED on the use of those yet. The changeover will be gradual as equipment is replaced. Companies DON'T spend on new equipment until they HAVE TO!!

I use Samsung Pay at Arco. They have a "Tap and Pay" reader at the pump. I know I've seen them on pumps at other gas stations as well, I just don't remember which one's. I do this for convenience as well as security as a card skimmer can't skim my phone or watch. CVS enabled contactless only about a month later so it would now work perfectly. Also tapping nfc too close to the screen can cause it to not read well or at all so its best to hold it a bit further from the screen and it should read a lot better. My Hardee's has had those pinpads for years since they opened and those are the same ones they use inside and that used nfc for sure so other mobile wallets work. What you saw is the standard Hardee's pos system which rolled into most if not all locations by now. Taco Bell will be accepting contactless in a few months or less. I think you should make a new version for this year (2019) since some big companies will be joining this year such as Target and Taco Bell which are both enabling nfc finally.
@Ric_Double6 жыл бұрын
about 99 percent of the gas pumps will have those dip card readers and the same for the ATMs. It's only until recently the past year where Bank of America and Wells Fargo just started adopting NFC readers on their machines (it's mainly going to be the big banks that will get the ball rolling since they got money). As for the gas pumps, I found a glimmer of hope a few weeks ago. I had to get fuel one time and randomly stopped at a Chevron station and lo and behold. The pump had a NFC reader in plain sight. I use Apple and it went through the first time with no problems and should technically work with Samsung Pay as well (I also have a Galaxy S6, along with iPhone 8 Plus). I've heard that there is some mandate that all gas stations have to update their pump terminals to read chipped cards (which most vendors do by now) by 2020 but it's been slow process. So I wouldn't be surprised it might be another 3-5 years before wide adoption . Slowly catching up to how the rest of the world uses NFC and chip.

Oh that's pretty sweet. I've only every seen one gas pump with tap and pay, and when I tried it, nothing happened. It wasn't enabled, so my excitement quickly faded. All of the readers are compatible with “Contactless” payments or at least 95% of them. We still have the same issue at gas stations. There should be 4 lights on top of the reader, if the first one blinks that means it supports NFC payments. If it doesn’t you should be able to use MST by holding the phone right beside were you would swipe the card. Also noticed the UI looks quite different from the one we have in Europe.
