I was introduced to this music at Highbury Primary School (Portsmouth UK) probably around 1957 when I would have been 9 years old. Mr Gobbles our teacher played it to us from a reel to reel tape recorder. He used to play us Kathleen Ferrier singing "Blow the Wind Southerly" also - an attempt calm the savage breast no doubt.

Today I have discovered this beautiful piece of music 🎼 by a composer of African-English descent, whom I had never heard of before. Samuel Coleridge Taylor is a genius of whom the African people should be very proud of. What a remarkable man, a composer who nowadays is not often performed in the Proms or on classic FM or radio 3. England 🏴 has great 👍 many composers not to be forgotten about! Lovely music 🎶

@@carelessrappide The "white" heritage is not as interesting though, in the context of his era, the life he lived and profession.

I remember in 1960 I along with 400 other Secondary Modern School best in show students across South Yorkshire sang Hiawath''s Wedding Feast at Leeds Town Hall It was an event none of us will forget.12 of us practiced for months after school [Wombwell Secondary Modern School For Girls] under the guidance of Miss Phillips probably one of the finest teachers ever. This was a difficult piece to learn. My twin sister Jane and I still sing along with this.. I often wonder if there was a tape made of our hand picked choir? City Choir fills my heart with joy and memories.

Wonderful to sing, lilting haunting melodies yet sadly neglected these days. I sang in this at Birmingham Town Hall in the Grammar Schools Choir circa 1972. It still stays with me. A very belated thank you to the Birmingham Music Education Department.

I remember singing this at Saltley Grammar School (as was) in the early 60's Wonderful times under the direction of Mr Gillet, an inspiration, and Mr Atkins, who accompanied on the piano and sang a glorious solo. Great memories.

I remember singing this in the mid 1960s, with the choral society of Allhallows School, near Lyme Regis. Gerald English sang the tenor solo "Onaway awake beloved". Fabulous!

The Oldham Hulme Grammar School for Girls upper school sung this for a Speech Day performance in November 1976. Norman Higgins was the conductor and I accompanied on piano. Significantly all the girls from forms Lower 5 to Upper 6 took part, musicians and non musicians alike and all without copies as they had learned it from memory! I remember how wonderful it sounded in the packed Boys' School Hall-unforgettable! Nothing on this scale has been attempted since, merely items by the school choirs and I doubt the interest or motivation would exist nowadays. I shall try to upload the version from LP record made all those years ago.

Well done to everyone. Sadly this work has fallen out of popularity in the UK now. I have been asked to be soloist in two performances over the years. Occasionally I sing 'Onaway' in recital. It is a lovely , tuneful, bright cantata which deserves to be performed more often. Congratulations for your fine performance.

Good luck for the concert Tiffin59 - really enjoy singing the cantata and here's to a big audience turn out . I do hope that you will be following the old Royal Choral Society tradition and having costumes, waterfalls, wigwams, backdrops - even the audience should come dressed up . I'm sure that would be fun!

Tenortalker..........brilliant suggestion, but it would need a long AGM to change ladies' concert dress. Yes - I love the photos of the old full dress Albert Hall performances, and, I think, some singers in Regents Park.

Really competent composition. The opening theme (used throughout) does however remind me of Wagner's Flying Dutchman theme dont know if anyone else thought so or if Coleridge-Taylor referred to it
