I read a book about Canadian exploration history and nobody caught my attention more than Samuel de Champlain did. Truly an interesting historical figure worth having a TV series on.

You should write it, give it to Netflix, and they might send you a T-shirt :)

I came here after preparing for canadian Citizenship exam. Some people intrigued me to study more and Samuel de Champlain is one of them. I'd love to study more about Indigenous cultures and lifestyles though.

The first permanent settlement and thus the first permanent building was at Port Royal in Acadia (Nova Scotia) in 1605. This settlement was founded by Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Mons. Champlain was Dugua's cartographer at the time.

Hey @Otto I can't say I disagree with you. Tadoussac is certainly not given its due. St John's as well could be a contender or other settlements in Newfoundland. Many of these we think were purely seasonal in occupation but I am not so sure that was really the case. Small contingents of people may have overwintered each year so as to get an early start in the fishery the next season. Although the individuals staying over each year may have changed the settlements could have seen a continuous occupation.

In Christmas Eve 1635 Champlain was struck by a stroke (brain haemorrhage/ very, very painful). Paralyzed, he died on December 25, 1635 in Quebec City... Nobody knows where he was buried (be with his beloved Domiciliés in Tadoussac ?)

When was this published? The use of the term "Indians" to describe the indigenous residents of the land is ridiculous.
