Sam Kwok trains with lots of good boxers, including former world middleweight bare knuckle champion Paddy Monaghan (see other videos) Also Wing Chun is more than comfortable at close range (elbows etc). they are different ways of fighting, the better fighter will win.

mookjong15: I have trained with Sifu Phil Nearing for several years. Currently on hiatus unfortunately. I have nothing but the highest respect for Sifu Nearing. He is top notch and has taken the time and respectful dedication to learn from the best Wing Chun people in the world. He has proven himself a respectful and wonderful representative of Wing Chun in it's pure Yip Man form. He can take a rookie and teach them how to be a person capable of fighting with skill and WCKF form.

I learnt Wing Tsun for quite a while, and it is truly a very devastating form of fighting. However, due to it's extremely technical nature, it's one of those skills that is easy to learn but hard to master. Its key skills are its simplicity; "Why go round the sun to get to the moon?" As well as training the different forms of WT, the student will also learn an array of techniques specifically to deal with different martial arts. I would recommend it to everyone!

Impressive to see how fast he actually reacts to attacks, by the time the attacker has his foot half way on it`s way towards Samuel Kwok he is at the sime time on his way down to the floor.. when Kwok does it, it look effortless.. would be an honor to train under him!

I started taking Wing Chun at age 30. I stopped for a few years, and now I'm 35 doing it again. Whenever you start, the main thing is to stick with it! Look up some vids of Ip Chun, and you'll see that he can still go even as an old man. More importantly, he states that WC is not just for self-defense and fighting, but also for keeping in shape physically and mentally.

It is a matter of preference - but if your hands are high your ribs are exposed and if they are low your head is exposed so keeping them in the middle (neck height) is best for me, that way they are never too far from a potential attack.
@nabapoisu
@nabapoisu 16 жыл бұрын
in wing chun, like other chinese fighting styles, the stance varies. If your hands are really swift and opponent is not in punch distance, u may keep hands a bit lower not to wear out your shoulders. Yet again, holding it at your eye level keeps them ready for any surprise attack. I suggest holding at eye level unless you are sure u can block blows to the head when your hands are lower. Kicking to the head is harder than to the stomach so if u know your opponent is not a kicker u may hold lower.

I think do think there are too many people not understanding that they are watching a demo, it seems to me many just want to see blood and guts and their Sifu hurting his students. I am one of Sifu Kwok's senior students and have travelled round the world with him and people have the greatest respect for him. I can not think of anyone that has done more to promote the Ip Family system than him. But then I have been round the world and seen how good he is in real life, who else can say this?

He still represents both his Sifu's Ip Ching + Chun, but he has his own martial arts association. As he has fully lernt from both Ip Chun and Ching its hard to say which influences his Kung Fu more but he keeps most contact with Ip ching at the moment. but Kwok and his students are going to study in China for 10 days with both his sifus.

I think the choice is personal to the fighter & how he feels during the confrontation. Normally we will step to the angle as the block is used moving toward the blind side and if needed use interupts to distract or even strike before he even has a chance to turn; like I said, whatever gets the job done
@dantesinferno80
@dantesinferno80 17 жыл бұрын
when blocking the kick with hands its usualy done at the point before the kick gains any real power (think of the kick as a pendulum swinging..the majority of the power will be at the bottom of the swing which at the top there will be little or no power, that is where you block)
@WingThaiJ
@WingThaiJ 17 жыл бұрын
It seems that this is the modified system as he's attacking the opponents center. In Traditional we avoid attacking directly in the center, but attack at the angle / blind side so to gain a positional advantage, take his balance and control the situation. However, certainly it's feasible to defend and attack in any way that will get the job done, it just seems like blind side fighting would be the goal.

I like Samuel kwoks wing chun but wonder is there a better way to block the kick? because in this you see the opponent kick kwok nearly in the head and i think he uses right hand gam sau to block then steps in and punches. I think if that was a proper fight and the kicker was more powerful, like a kick boxer etc i think he would get smashed in the head. Any pointers please? Good video!

Wing Chun is for sure a good martial art to use in real fights, like on the street... most like Aikido, but aims directly to the face of the opponent most of times.
@MMAneuver
@MMAneuver 17 жыл бұрын
He's not exposing his centerline during the first techniques at all, if anything he MOVES off the opponents centerline in order to enter through the opponents guard at 'difficult to block' angles. This is also an example of good footwork then. I also agree with the above comments that these techniques are only 'static' to demonstrate some basic entry and defense techniques.

My Sifu Samuel Kwok reffers to Ip Chun and Ip Ching as his Sifu's. Im only saying what he says. Yes technically you can only have one Sifu. but if we are being pedantic Samuel Kwok originally started Wing Chun lerning from Lee Sing in England. However Samuel Kwok is most definatly a senior Representative of both Chun + Ching. Ask either of them or Sam Kwok. (some manners wouldn't go a miss)
@lancswingchun
@lancswingchun 17 жыл бұрын
This is as traditional as Wing Chun gets as Kwoks Sifu's are Ip Chun + Ching. Like you say getting to the blind side is always the best place to be. Kwok does it when being attacked in this. but when entering it is not that important because if you try to attck a stationry person at a different angle all they need to do is turn. but like you say 'blind side fighting would be the goal' where possible
@cornwallgeezer
@cornwallgeezer 14 жыл бұрын

I agree with LWC on this one, but I would hesitate to call Wing Chun a sport, or to enter into it with the "tournament" mentality. If anything, I'd say 16 is a great age to get into MA, but don't wait or put it off...when I started MA at 18 I just remember being upset that I didn't start sooner.
