As a fellow black man who has enjoyed watching Samuel L Jackson for years, I'm utterly disappointed on his comments about British actors playing American characters. Has he forgotten that African Americans actors have played African characters all over the world. Forest Withaker in Idi Amin, Don Cheadle in Hotel Rwanda and Will Smith in concussion. Mandela has been played by a host of African American actors such as Danny Glover, Terrence Howard, and Morgan Freeman. The list goes on and on. Are you saying that British actors are not black enough to play African Americans. If his premise is that they don't have a share a collective experience, then he doesn't know Britain like he thinks he does. For God sake Great Britain was the fore runner on racism. Great Britain colonized, repressed and oppressed several indigenous cultures all over the world. Africa used to be referred to as savage Africa in English literature. The Brits are just as racist as the Americans, just a little more polite and subtle in their approach. Also, how can he be hypocritical when has made about 11 movies in Britain himself. So it's ok for him to travel to England for work but not the black British actors? As a Black man, I still love and respect Samuel L Jackson but I have to disagree on this issue. Unity is what our race needs and not division. That's why we continue to fall prey to all kinds of vices.

Absolute legend!!! I am a black man from England and have to disagree with Samuel on the interracial dating comment. The majority of black people to Britain came in the wind rush error mainly in the 50s and 60s from the Caribbean. Racism back then was real bad to the point were some people would have dog excrement posted through there letter box and not to mention police brutality. Inter racial dating has only really boomed since the 80s. In terms of acting it's harder for a black actor to make it in the UK which is why many go over to the USA as there are more opportunities. Structural racism in Britain is like a fine tune operating machine which almost always sees blacks given roles as drug dealers or hustlers and you will very rarely see a black person in a lead role.

Jerome Lammy is talking rubbish. Inter racial dating has been about way longer than the 80s and the windrush era started in 1948 not the late 50s. most of the famous british black men in the last few hundred years married white women. Francis Barber for example, and he died back in 1801. And how does it make you a sell out to like white women? that is a racist statement. I like white women, so do a lot of other black men. big deal.
@jerom19867 жыл бұрын
bow man Wow! First of all where did I say that if you like white women you are a sell out?? I did not say that so stop being so sensitive secondly yes interracial dating has been in Britain for hundreds of years but it boomed in the 80s and 90s to back that up how many mixed race 50 plus year olds do you see in the UK? In Liverpool you will see a few but generally there is not many. If you like white women that's up to you there is nothing wrong with that but don't start attacking me on statements that I haven't made!

Those are facts, but you have to program your mind and view to perceive it accurately.

South African yes, but they complain about Americans playing their roles as well. Especially in the two Mandela movies. I can see if there was a shortage on good actors from a given region. But I think the problem more stems from only a handful of black actors being popular at a time anyway; then instead of increasing the number they go outside the US and bring in replacements, which makes eyebrows raise. Black communities deal with this problem on a national level in the new world as they're the first to be displaced whenever a new group of people arrive. So it is deeper than just being about British actors.

Ebro get a black British actor like Idris or David on this to say the real ness about black British actors and racism. Sam is one of my favourite actors but he knows nothing about the UK. Also British actors are used more because we have a strong theatre tradition that most actors have to go through before they even reach the states so our actors by large are better trained than most Americans actors.

Moses Ssebandeke thank you. He doesn't know that black actors go to America because of the LACK of diverse roles in the UK. I have found that being a 50 year old white woman I am being told that I don't know what racism is because 1. I'm not black and 2. I didn't grow up in an era of difficulty.... this is why the term white privilege is so sickening to me. I grew up poor and a single parent family in a small town.. don't know how that can differ from another human being growing up poor. It is what we grow up with and things need to be taught, children don't know what white or black is... they are taught this. I understood hardship and I didn't understand why because I wasn't black or native that I didn't understand about those kinds of hardships that the 'underprivileged' had experienced.

The Fact is that Black British actors are just better. They are born in a county which has a rich heritage in the arts. At school they study drama and the great playwrights. Americans focus on big name celebrities such as Beyoncé, Jamie Foxx, Dwayne Johnson, Will Smith etc to play movie roles. They can't compete with actors who have studied the arts for Years in the Uk. British actors are just quality and casting directors know it. American actors who have played non American roles are terrible e.g. Don Cheadle, Tay Diggs, Eddie Murphy, Mel Gibson, Denzel Washington, Forest Whitaker the list goes on. In contrast Idris Elba can play any role with ease, South African, gangster from Baltimore, Jamaican, professional African American etc. And there are plenty like him in the uk. He is not one dimensional like African Americans who can only play gangsters, prostitutes or comedy clowns. There is a big golf in acting ability and the British have mastered the craft.
@TheLadyday11397 жыл бұрын
" ...He is not one dimensional like African Americans who can only play gangsters, prostitutes or comedy clowns." Re your quote - that's not what we can "only" play, but it IS how we Black Americans are typically VIEWED, and that view owes a lot to our history in the USA. PS, you forgot one more thing on that list of stereotypes you gave: "magic negro who's the conscience/redemption for the white character."
@TheLadyday11397 жыл бұрын
Also, there are plenty of conservatory-trained, degreed African American film and theater actors out there (Denzel is one, Mahershala Ali is another), so British Black actors aren't just simply "better". There are a couple of factors at work, I think: american's love the british actor, regardless of race bc they bring an *air" (justified or not) of being more cultured and intelligent. Also, I think Americans and particularly Black Americans, put more of a premium of *authenticity* or *realness* for their entertainers, which is why you'll see rappers and singers get acting parts more frequently than a university-trained "Actor". The perception - rightly or wrongly - is that maybe the trained actor is going to compromise their realness somehow.

Black British actors flee England and take advantage of the thankless work AA actors have being doing for decades, only to triply undermine AA actors by playing stereotypical roles or our historical icons like MLK and Tubman for cheap. Love him as an actor, he needs to stop talking about Britain like he understands it though. We dont have the same obvious problems with race as in America, in large part because we have no guns, so people are not being shot every day by police; however that does not mean that we dont have our own problems.

What African Americans don't want to do is belittle Black Brits and their issues without knowledge of life in Britain. White supremacy and the imperialist conquests of the world were pioneered by the British... Trust us we know about racism, it might not be as stark as in America but everything is bigger in America, it's America. They must remember that Black Brits know more about and identify strongly with African Americans, compared to the other way round. Whereas most African Americans know very little about life in Britain being black. This is why Black Brits can assimilate into African American roles seemingly like Magic... But there is more to it than that, they have always felt a connection and are extremely supportive of Black American struggles. Don't push them away or you will lose a solid ally....

Well then Black Brit filmmakers need to be making those films about their life and history. Walk the talk -show us what we're missing!
@ksekweyama7 жыл бұрын
+TheLadyday1139 Just so you know, there has been a legacy of Black Brit filmmakers making films about their life and history the website Shadow & Act (which I recommend) does their bit monitoring such filmakers in current day and age. The problem, parallel to what I've heard what I've heard Black American film makers go through, films by Black Brit filmmakers are mostly independant so they won't get the necessary support & backing by the major British film distribution & networks, unless they conform to the sensationalism and stereotypes of blacks for blockbuster mainstream commercial success.

My thoughts exactly Samuel, I think it is an insult to have a non-American play a role about American history and the American experience, especially when Americans can't do the same in places like Britain, nor should we be allowed to. MLK should have been played by a brother from Atlanta, point blank, Atlanta or the South. It's kind of saying American blacks are not good enough to play themselves in moves. I think out of respect for the American culture, Hollywood needs to think. Another example is Daniel Day playing Abraham Lincoln, really, a British man playing an American president, and the list goes on and on...

Racism isn't as bad in England as it is in America but in terms of acting many of us such as Idris Elba, Naomi Harris as well as many other British-black actors have a better opportunity in America than England. Dunno why acting is so racist in England but at least we excell in every other way regarding race I suppose...

Our British brothers and sisters are being over sensitive. Sam didn't say black brits shouldn't be allowed to play black american roles. He's just noticing the same thing many of us have noticed, that black brits are getting the best roles. John Boyega "STAR WARS" David Oyelowo "SELMA" Carmen Ejogo "SELMA" Chiwetel Ejiofor "12 YEARS OF SLAVE" Daniel Kaluuya "GET OUT" All Brits and very talented, by the way. There is just this hollywood assumption that if you have a british accent your a cut above american actors.

Love this dude but what he said about Get out, the UK, and Black British actors is incredibly ignorant. The UK is also a super racist country with Black people constantly being killed in police custody, et. etc. A Black British actor may have a different cultural and historical background, but believe me, if there is one thing in common that they have experienced and know just as deeply as US Black people, it is racism.
