OH, MY, GOODNESS!!!!!! I am gob-freaking-smacked. I stumbled upon this while searching for something else. At first, I was incredulous: WHAAAT? My old school, playing Mahler? Give me a break! When I was part of our proud orchestra back in the mid- to late-60's, we were really known more as a strings ensemble, proud to play some simple Elgar and winning every music festival contest. But Mahler? Come on! So, I listened, and I was blown away. I don't know where to begin to express how impressive this was, or how emotional it was for me. You see, this was my first Mahler (listening, not playing), and so, arguably still the closest to my heart. By the ending section, I was in tears - it gave me a sense of how well they would have done even in the more challenging 2nd movement, "Stürmisch bewegt, mit größter Vehemenz" - MY favourite movement in my favourite Mahler symphony. Even on the surface, this orchestra was impressive: 5 horns, and 5 basses!!!! Give me a break. In our days, we struggled to find even a single decent horn player! And I have to say, as good as the strings were, all of them, the woodwinds and horns were the stars (well, can't forget the percussionists holding it all together). And how this dude can pull off conducting so confidently without a score is plain scary. Bravo! Bravo!

:O amazed that a secondary high school orchestra can play Mahler 5! The standard is amazing!

Great job Sam! Also, good horns! I wish I could play in an orchestra like this in secondary school. But of course the level has gone up so much since we were kids.
