that is my opinion, but the wrong samurai even holds his sword false, you are not supposed to hold your hand at the end of the top of the sword handle and more like Jack where you hold the sword more in the middle of the handle. but i´m not sure.

There is actually a special bump in the wrap just higher than the exact middle that is supposed to sit right in the palm of your inside hand specifically so it increases your grip when you hold it right.

I think it means a metaphorical mask. Some people will put on a facade, usually of confidence, in order to hide the fact they feel insecure. Jack might be saying that the other guy (can't remember his name) needs to accept the fact that he is weaker than Jack: only then will he start to become stronger.
