I've been manipulating photos since I was young, but society made me think it was cheating and not real art. I felt like I had to draw everything from scratch... but I can see that couldn't be further from the truth. Nothing is truly original as we are always referencing something that already exists. Yes very true but when you hear leading concept artists talk about this issue the one thing that everyone says is that it's not how you make it, but it's about WHAT you make. BUT, you should never ignore sketching or painting , you should have all the tools to make your art the best it can be.

No artist in this day and age will ever be truly original, everyone pulls from something or someone even subconsciously- the only original artist is the universe and if we can accept that in return it will make us better artists because we won't fall to society's pressures. Also, I found the best way to improve my art was to draw from scratch with a refence, but when I needed to finish a commission or something for a deadline it was just easier to draw on top of my own photos or 3d models, it sped me up. I actually keep a cataloged of hands I've drawn over the years for commissions because they are so annoying to draw from scratch.

Same here! It felt like cheating because that is what people believe when manipulating photos to produce WHAT I want to paint…. Which made me stop doing that, but as of now, I’m back doing that because it would still be my skill on how to make my idea into a real and incredible painting, even if it is using a bunch of references.

I like this! In my head, I am picturing this like a samurai coming home to his home village after fought in a war. Great work on the landscape photobash too, the mountain, the sea, and the village looks beautiful in the composition.

I think these farms in the center are very sharp than the rest of the picture. More correctly in the composition when clear elements are present in the center of the composition. Otherwise, we get an incomprehensible effect and break the focus. Whatever it was, these rice fields are my favorite element in this picture. looking at him I want to add more details to the village itself, which is located nearby.

Agreed, perhaps some kind of live stream of the process on the next digital painting with some commentary would be so useful. I know a master doesn't want to give his tricks away, but it's frustrating to be so inspired by something but not having the tools to even be able to try. I'm comfortable with the compositing, but the painting over the composite is something I have no idea how to do.
