Reminds me of that Simpsons episode with the lizards: - But isn't that a bit short-sighted? What happens when we're overrun by lizards? - No problem. We simply unleash wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes. They'll wipe out the lizards. - But aren't the snakes even worse? - Yes, but we're prepared for that. We've lined up a fabulous type of gorilla that thrives on snake meat. - But then we're stuck with gorillas! - No, that's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death. I sincerely hope those researchers are being extra careful, history showed us how bad it was to release more exotic species in the wild to "control" another one. But if the wasps only go for the Stink Bugs I guess it's the best way to deal with that invasive species. Humans are still the source of all that shitshow.
@chitinskin98605 жыл бұрын
Never is a bit much. Many wasps are specially designed to hunt specific prey. It won't ever go beyond hunting stink bugs, and even then it would probably prefer the marmorated stinkbugs as that's what they naturally prey on. It should work solely due to wasp behavior, and the parasitoids are quite picky. But it could always go wrong, they could attack the wrong stink bugs, so everything is up to speculation until they are done testing them.
@MyLuggage123455 жыл бұрын
Yup - don't want another Hawaii-mongoose situation. "The law of unintended consequences." We know for sure that pesticides are bad, though, so after some careful testing it's probably worth the risk. Hope they check how the wasps handle other hemipterans.
@hollywalker56565 жыл бұрын
I agree with Cryptomaster and entomologist have learned from the past where biological controls brought in from the past caused issues. Before they would ever release wasps these as part of a major pest management control campaign the insects have to be tested against all kinds of closely related stinkbug species to see if there is a chance they might jump host. Beneficial insect control species, like this wasp, that are being raised in laboratory settings have to show high selectivity for the pest host, so that they are very unlikely to move off and start attacking a beneficial or native species. These insects will be monitored and tested in quarantine labs for years before they can officially be released. But the good thing is that they already exist in nature on the west coast so that also gives scientist and idea of how they would behave in nature.

Free range chickens under your fruit trees do a lot to help control stink bugs. I have a small orchard of apples and have seen a marked reduction in stink bugs in the areas where my hens range under the trees. Not enough to stop them cold, but with the wasps able to take 60% to 90% maybe it will be enough to stop them in the future without bee killing pesticides.
@joeblack44365 жыл бұрын
I suspect there would be little downside to introducing the wasps. They are likely adapted prominently for dealing with stink bugs only. Looking at the adults their size is obviously constrained by the size of the stink bug eggs and there are probably a lot of subtle chemical cues specific to the species it targets. Still worth a good study though. It's always a good policy.
@thadofalltrades5 жыл бұрын
The only concern would be if they adapt to target other types of insects once the stinkbugs are under control. Either most of their population will die off and remain balanced with the stink bugs or they will find an alternative food source.

This summer we had an infestation of them, I counted 30 on my net. I had to install a net just to prevent them from entering. Some got in, some didn't. Now I'm thinking of buying an even better net.

@@KQEDDeepLookMe too, but are you guys sure it's a proboscis and not a rostrum? I always thought that proboscis "probed" like moths butterflies and bees, but assassin beetles, leafhoppers, and stinkbugs have a penetrating mouthpart that can also inject, and I always thought that was the difference between a rostrum and a proboscis. Did I just learn something wrong somewhere and take it as fact again? Lol I hate that. It's so hard to police a lifetime of sources.

Fun bugs to play with. The *samurai wasp vs. the pesticides* is the clean issue. Customers would rather not have pesticides in their food, and the farmers would rather not pay for pesticides every season. Dear wasps, please win this !

I saw one of these crawl in my house through a window, and I trapped it in a water bottle. I filled it with water and shook it around till it died. I dumped the water outside afterwards, having no idea that 1, they usually smell, and 2 they're bad for crops.

New Jersey needs these samurai wasps, although I have seen a praying mantis grab and dismantle a stink bug from time to time; stink bugs out number anything moving or flying in October.

Another unwanted thing to come out of Asia. Along with Murder hornets and some new Asian beetle and COVID ....the list is endless. Though I don’t mind stink bugs. I live in an apartment complex and they always come in during the fall, see them on warmer days in the winter. I let them be. They’re not in here to eat fruit or anything. Once they come in for the winter they’re in a mode where they’re not eating anything until spring, when they return outdoors. Although they don’t seem to live long. I’ll see one come out, watch it be active that evening. Then I usually find them dead in a couple days. The only thing that I HATE is when they fly. Cause they sound like helicopters or drones. I used to think there was a fly, and I’d go around trying to find it and never could. Was actually relieved when I found out the buzzing was a stink bug. Though I have a small light on and I think I hear one kinda flying right now. -shrug- not going to kill him, put him out in the cold. Long as he doesn’t bother me, or hurt me, why would I hurt him? Though summertime, I’d let him outside.

I live in an old, poorly sealed house and these stinkbugs are a real nightmare. They get in easily and there is nothing worse than having one fly in your hair and freak out and stink up everything. Or fall into your shower and stink, or your food, or ANYTHING. Seriously, I will throw money at those researchers to help, or steal a jar of wasps. I'm desperate.

@tonybalony18115 жыл бұрын
That barely works. You have to spray sooo much to kill them, and then once you do they take forever to die. I was traumatized by the sound they made when one was flopping all over the floor trying to fly away

We have them in Maine.. see them toward the end of the summer when it starts to get cold.. then they start to head inside. (They smell like old bananas) Thank God for central vacuums...thwoop! And they're gone. And thank God for Extremely cold winters which finishes off large numbers of them. It may take some time and science, but we will win.. we always do.
