1616. High Priest Tenkai (Yoshida Yoshio) informs Yagyū Tajima-no-Kami (Konoe Jūshirō) of his concerns about Hidenari, the surviving son of Toyotomi Hideyori who managed to escape from the Osaka fortress, and his mother, Katsura-no-miya Renko (Ōtani Naoko), who are in hiding following the impending death of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Reluctantly, Yagyū orders his subordinate Asahina Gen'emon (Satō Kei) to capture the mother and son, who are hiding in a temple in Kyoto. Although the mother and son manage to escape Kyoto's jurisdiction with the help of their maid Sasaka (Watanabe Yayoi), they are pursued by the Kōga ninja, Yami no Shichibei (Toura Rokko), and the Iga ninja, Senri Unten (Watanabe Atsushi). On the beach, when Sasaka is about to be killed, she is rescued by the rōnin casually present, Akizuki Rokurōta (Tamura Masakazu). Rokurōta's true identity is that of the Shogun's twin brother and successor, Tokugawa Iemitsu. Not being allowed a place in the Tokugawa family as a successor, he was sent as an adopted son from a young age and has been wandering alone ever since. Coincidentally, after saving the mother and son, Rokurōta, drawn to Sasaka and together with Unten, who has betrayed the Tokugawa, decides to protect them both from assassins and travel with them....
This drama series is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Shibata Renzaburo Following his role as Kyoshiro, Tamura's unique qualities were fully utilized in this captivating portrayal, making it his signature role. His skill in swordsmanship was also showcased in his movements. It is also a pleasure to see Jushiro Konoe, a major star in the world of historical dramas, known for his role as Yagyu Jubei in the "Yagyu Bugeicho" film series, play his character in this drama series.

This particular episode creates echoes of the Yamashita treasure that the Imperial Japanese army had plundered and hoarded thru out the Far East and is said to have been hidden in an undisclosed area in the Philippines, still undiscovered of it's location, it sent several treasure hunters both foreigners and locals hunting for the treasure back in the 60s thru the 70s, and according to some legends (or rumors), the hoard included a huge sitting Buddha (about 4-5 feet tall) made entirely out of gold. It was also rumored that there was supposedly an existing map, but it was of no avail since the map and the treasure(s) still haven't been found. I'm not familiar with the trial of General Yamashita but I don't think that the American tribunal court had made any inquiries into the matter of the treasure's existence, and since after his execution, everything was left to speculation. The reason I put this story out is due to the seeming prevalent theme of "War and it's rewards" in many "Sengoku" themed stories and films, in which case, the "booty" is supposed to go to the victors, and if Imperial Japan didn't get defeated in the war, the booty will definitely be claimed as the property of Emperor Hirohito and his monarchy. But, as Rokurota says in this episode, not knowing where the treasure is perhaps best for the world in order to avoid further bloodshed. The philosophy seems appealing, but the hoard could have been used for reparations to families that have been sent to destitution and homelessness due to the leaders' wars. The victims of wars deserve to be restored to their former economic state after having their rice bowls broken by foolish wars.
