I have been teaching my horse this trick for some time. When I give the cue for lay down she gives all the right signs; her head drops to the ground and she brings her feet so close together that the hooves from her frontlegs sometimes stand on the hooves from her hindlegs. She really stands in a V shape. She even fell on one or both knees a few times, but then she immediately gets up. I think she understands what I want from her, but she just isn't eager to lay down. Do you have any tips or ideas how I could improve this? Thanks! ❤️ Love your videos by the way, immediately subscribed! Update: a few days ago, for the first time in more than one and a half year, she laid down on que!! We practiced it a few more times and she laid down every time (for about 1 second, but that's totally fine! So happy!!) !

I absolutely love your mindset and understanding of training from the horses perspective, thank you Sam for taking the time to make this video and help people achieve their goals. I am stuck on the last step and wondered if anyone could help me/advise. I started this with my mare around a month ago, she is very relaxed and head goes straight down and stays there. She will happily tuck her back legs in from the tapping que and lifts both front legs if I tap them, but I can only get her to lift/unlock one at a time. She sees the last step as lifting a front leg but I can't put it all together to achieve the lay down. Im not really sure where to go from here. Thanks

Hi Sam! I really love your method, and I hope that some day I could come and take some private lesson from you. I have a question for you. I tried the “pole releases” with my mare, but she was like pushing against my pressure. Do you have any idea, to fix it, or any other exercises of this type? I would love to have your answer, and I really hope to meet you one day, Gioia🐎💫♥️

Thank you for this video! I have not quite started teaching the lay-down. I want to become more familiar with other liberty principles first. My question for you is: My horse (foxy) I have owned for about 4 years, i ride her without tack, I spend hours daily with her. I am pretty sure she trusts me... when I call her from the pasture she comes cantering up, I spend around 30 minutes to an hour brushing her every day, and we do groundwork before every ride. But, the weird thing is, she is weird about letting me pet her while she's laying down. She will roll on the lead rope after a ride, and she never acts nervous around me. I bought her when she was older (15) maybe something happened before we bought her? Do you think that its a trust thing? or just a learned behavior? I dont want to start teaching the laydown until I can be sure its not going to be an issue. Anyways, this is a fantastic video. You are a great teacher and I love your channel! Thanks so much!!

Sam, I have the lay down pretty much perfected with my horse. I changed the que to the top of the left leg so that was an easy place to reach with my whip or foot later when I tried to teach him to lay down when I am mounted. Today I got him to lay down while on him (first time I popped right over his head) and the second time I stayed on and got him to do a full lay down. My question is this... he does a bit of circling and pawing (granted this is our first try), is this ok since we are just learning this? Should I just ignore that for now and just work on him getting comfortable with this trick?

Would really love if you could give me any advice it would be much appreciated, thanks a lot and thanks for making these videos!!

I've been trying to teach my horse this but we struggle with actually laying down. He steps his hind legs under himself nicely, has his head down and puts his front foot up but that's it. He doesn't pop his knee, he fully lifts his foot. When I tap the other front leg, he put his leg down and lifts the other one. I don't know how to teach him to do "less" - only popping his knee out. I'm waiting for warmer weather at the moment so he's tempted to roll but other than that I'm out of ideas. It would be great if any of you had advices!

I'm scared my horse will get used to laying down. She was taught that by her last owner but when I first got her she laid down while riding. She only did it 2 times and realized we didn't want her to do it while mounted. You'd think it's a bad idea to teach her again, but she learns really quick, so I think I can teach her to laid down on cue and teach her not to do it when not asked for it, do you have any recommendations?

Hey Sam, i know you mentioned this in the video but im still stuck: My mare is not moving her back feet forwards. Shes almost too well mannered and knows not to kick out when touched in/around her hind legs (even just a light kick). Ive increased the preasure and tried the one foot back, she refuses to move. Any help?

I have this same issue. I don’t mean this as an insult, it’s a good thing that her horses are trained, but she only uses very well trained horses that are light to all the pressure already. The first time I tried this I ended up practically beating my gelding in the belly, the pressure continued to increase until I was uncomfortable with how hard I was hitting my horse. Because he is desensitized properly and this isn’t one of his cues. He is light to his already existing cues. I wish she would show teaching an inexperienced horse.
@Polopony20.3 жыл бұрын
@@katelynatwood3027 she said that was originally the plan but I think she just got too busy. I'm sure there's got to be another way to get them to respond. Have you tried Positive Reinforcement/treats? That works the best for my gelding, while my mare responds to taps

so this might be the dumbest question ever, but what is the ACTUAL cue to lay down? is it the belly tapping with the whip? like if i can get him down and am just standing around him and want him to lay down it's just tapping his belly?
@ciarafarrell94944 жыл бұрын
My horse sees the cue to move the hind legs forward as me asking him to walk forwards fully so he just starts to walk rather than move the feet forward

I’m confused about how they know to move the hind feet forward...and how the horse actually lays down? I’ve gotten my horse all set perfectly many times and asked all the steps, and all he does is just unlock his front feet and then stand there. I’m confused about how they actually lay down. Your horses are already trained so it’s hard to follow how an untrained horse actually gets to this point of actually laying down.

To teach your horse to LIE down, lay down the whip. Use hand and voice cues. Treat him like a partner, not a victim.
