Hypoglossal nerve (CN XII)

The anatomy of the hypoglossal nerve, also known as cranial nerve 12 or CN XII if you're fancy. We can see where it comes out of the brain stem, how it leaves the cranial cavity, where it goes to, what it innervates and stuff like that. We could ever consider the effects of lower motor neurone injuries versus upper motor neurone injuries.

Here is a anatomy/biomechanics riddle: Some people say that doing neck/head circles/rolls is a risky maneuver. It can pinch nerves or arteries or something. On the other hand, the linear movement of dropping one ear towards a shoulder is fine. Similarly, lifting up your chin and extending the neck is fine (within a certain range). Hence, these linear movements are fine. What is it about the three dimensional circular movement that can create problems?
