As we've been looking at the anatomy of the face recently we really should have a look at the sensory innervation of the skin of the face while we're here. It's a bit involved but the overview is straightforward.

I’m not a student, I suffer with trigeminal neuralgia and I’m swatting up on it! You’re a fantastic teacher! Wish I’d have taken biology. Bit too late now at 44 years old 😅 I’m really enjoying your lessons. I will keep watching. Msg for the students- My trigeminal neuralgia comes in very heavy & extremely painful waves. I can go from a 3 pain wise (it’s at a 2-3 most of the time but I can live with that) right up to a 9-10 in a split second. The intense pain lasts for around 10-15 mins and then goes back to a 3 for 20 mins then back up to 9-10 and so on.. I have them come in bouts of about 2-3 weeks then it’ll stay at between 2-6 when I’m not in bout. I’ve been suffering with this condition for about 10 years but I have only just been diagnosed by my gp. I’ve had many many back teeth out because obviously I thought it was my teeth hurting! I’ve been referred to see a neurologist at long last 🥳 Other symptoms I get is •Eye uncontrollably twitching for weeks on end.. •certain sound frequency makes the pain in my TN flair up! •Tingling feeling in my forehead and temple. Constant pain maybe at a 3 in pain chart. • triggers can make it ramp up to an 8+ • eye on the TN side goes bloodshot for weeks. • even certain flavours trigger pain.. one of mine is cheesy poofs 😩 I love cheesy puffs Anyways, good luck to everyone who’s watching this amazing man teach. I hope you all pass 😊

32yo, construction worker, & through your 20min video I was able to learn & understand more about my Trigeminal Autonomic Cephalalgia/Cluster Headaches, than 18years of trips to the E.R., scans & doctors ever did. I have been suffering with suicide headaches since I was about 14. After seeing your presentation I can understand multiple aspects of this pain I've been living with for so long now. Thank you for sharing your knowledge & time..

Have cervical spondylosis and because of the extensiveness, nobody will do surgery. Sensation of "choking" and "tightening" on my neck and skull. I'm still seeing answers and someone to help me. This was most informative and provided an education more than received from anywhere else across sites. My sincere gratitude.

A couple of friends of mine have trigeminal neuralgia subsequent to shingles (post-herpetic neuralgia). As Millie-Jai describes, the pain they suffer from is excruciating and chronic. From another site: "Trigeminal neuralgia is sudden, severe facial pain. It's often described as a sharp shooting pain or like having an electric shock in the jaw, teeth or gums." A horrifyingly apt nickname is ""Suicide Disease," because it is so intense and unbearable. One friend (Andy) had to stop working altogether because of the pain in his face, especially his eye, ear, and cheek. He had several brain surgeries to implant a device that was supposed to deaden the pain in the trigeminal nerve; it was a little successful, but had to be reprogrammed periodically, and required some further brain surgeries. This friend had been a successful journalist with a major newspaper in the US (USA Today). Heartbreaking that he hasn't been able to do that since his early 40s. Andy urges everyone to get shingles vaccines well before age 60, despite the normal timeline when doctors typically suggest it. Thank you to the extraordinary Sam Webster for your energetic, highly enlightening, expert teaching. I am not a medical student nor in the medical field (although as a teacher of singing I have become interested in many areas of anatomy, and this is true also because of the various chronic diseases I have), but I have happily and gratefully been watching all your anatomy teaching videos. You're amazing.

I love the way you explain, but I’ve noticed so far at min 18:42 two BIG mistakes. First is the postganglionar parasympathetic neurons of the lacrimal gland are NOT traveling with the lacrimal branch v1, they join and travel with the maxillary nerve V2. Which there was not so much details about (v2) like pharyngeal, nasopalatine, alveolar branches were not mentioned so far

thank you very much!!! Just wanted to add trigeminal disease is not just neuralgia but also nephropathy, which is constant more like pain, happens from trauma to the nerve by dentists, plastic surgeons, car accident and such, this pain is harder to treat and we need more help in that department!!....Greetings from Israel

Thanks for making these. It can be hard to find good, detailed videos on medicine/A&P. There's so much junk claiming to teach you in a 2 to 5 minute video. They don't even seem worth watching. I'd rather watch a long, detailed video like this and learn it proper than watch a 5 minute video which provides the illusion of education while only teaching very little, if anything. People like you make KZbin worth coming to. without such exceptional educational content I'd have little reason to frequent the site. Cheers!

I can’t thank you enough for sharing this information. I have a trigeminal Schwannoma which is pressing on the nerve causing twitching of my top lip towards the corner of my mouth. I also have numbness around the corner of my mouth. I have been trying to find a really good anatomy image or lecture to really explain what my tumour is, where it is and why I have the symptoms I do. Yours is the best by far. I have been told the tumour is in the Meckels cave which I didn’t hear you mention so a little confused? But a lot more enlightened now thank you.
@SamWebster
@SamWebster 5 жыл бұрын
Meckel's cave describes the bony shape in the floor of the cranial cavity posterior to the trigeminal ganglion, and the bit the trigeminal ganglion and its three branches sit in. i didn't know that so thanks for teaching me something new. I wish you good luck with this.

I have a very strong but dull ache that travels from my most forward upper right molar, up and to my nasal cavity, and then it travels up my nose and to the corner of my eye. Sometimes I can feel a sort of tingling sensation in my nose where it hurts. I’m on gabapentin but it doesn’t do anything. The doctors keep saying it’s a form of migraine, but I just don’t think it’s that. I have migraines and there nothing like this. This never goes away. Thanks for your explanation!

Textbooks show dermatome maps, and there are (at least) two different dermatome maps. Also, nerves innervating dermatomes overlap, and we are all a little different, biologically. So a picture of the dermatome map of the head might be more of an average view, and individuals may vary from the map.

I've been having a cracked open wisdom tooth for almost a year. Tooth number 16. I keep getting these weird tension on the branch of the trigeminal. Also my jaw is very stiff. Aside from that I get alot of tingling in half of my head from same side of pain. I get anxiety at time when I deeply think of it. Funny part is that, the open tooth itself doesn't hurt me at all. Doctor please let me know what you're thoughts are. Best advice from you would mean the world to me right now. Loving you're video. I hit subscribe!
