The intercostal muscles lie between the ribs and build the walls of the thorax. They can move the ribs and have roles in breathing. Let's look at the layers of external, internal and innermost intercostal muscles and talk about what they do.
I know I said I'd look at the organs of the male pelvis this week, but I forgot. I'll do it in a couple of weeks. Honest.

These videos are honestly so amazing, it helps so much to actually visualise stuff instead of just craming things into my head. Thank you so much for your efforts and all these resources because not everyone can afford them. Only if my professors could take half of the effort I'd be intrested way better in their classes. Thank you mate, i hope you the best!

Fantastic illustration. You know Dr. Sam, wouldn't it be more apt to consider the internal/innermost intercostals moving in the antero-superior direction towards the sternum, and visualizing them pulling the costal cartilages down back to their original position after the inspirational bucket handle elevation by the external intercostals (running antero-inferiorly, pulling the ribs up)?

Intercostal neuralgia is described as pain that wraps around your chest, sometimes described as a band radiating from the back of the body to the front chest or upper abdomen. The pain may be described as burning, spasm-like, aching, gnawing and stabbing.👍

@@CrazyTechLab Oh no, sorry to read that. Well it took about 4 days I'd say. The nights were the worst. I couldn't get into a comfortable position at all so slept upwards with 3 high pillows. No side was comfortable to lie on tbh. Breathing was particularly hard. My partner massaged this ointment called Tiger Balm on the injury atleast 3 times a day. You have to be careful with that stuff, always do your own research regarding medicines etc as we are no doctors. A friend gave it to me and said it worked on an injury they had so I tried it. Its really strong stuff, smells like Vanilla and menthyl imo. I absolutely hate taking any form of medication but on a night took paracetamol to try and help the Inflammation or whatever it was. I'd take some during the day if needed. A month later, I can still feel it but definitely not as bad, am able to go gym and be physical thank goodness. Oh also, at the time of the Injury, my partner rang 111. A UK nhs helpline. They asked me to go to A & E as my breathing was so bad and within the injury was a continuous stabbing pain. I didn't manage to go as I couldn't even stand or sit and waiting in A & E would have been daunting esp by myself as no one else would have been allowed in with me due to Covid. We didn't even ring the Dr's as they are pretty useless around here. It's always best to go get an xray in A & E if possible etc just incase there's really bad damage. I opted for medicine, ice and Tiger balm (no hot water bottle was used) rest and no physical activities what so ever. Got better gradually past the 4 day mark, it will take a while. Get well soon. ☺️

@@sashiez1 Thanks for the advice! Is certainly a strangely debilitating injury! It does feel a bit better today but won’t be back in the pool for a week or two I think! Coughing, sneezing and deep breathing really hurts as does some movement but I can lift things and move my arm fine so it’s clearly not a pec injury. I’ve had ice packs on it too and starting hot treatment today. I think I have some tiger balm somewhere after a trip to a massage therapist a few years ago so I’ll try that!. Also ordered a hot/cold strap gel pack off Amazon to make the hot cold treatment easier!

@@CrazyTechLabYou're welcome! Yes, you are right. It's one of the weirdest and most painful injuries I've ever had that certainly does leave you feeling dehabilitated for a while. The injury shocked me like it would have you as we like to keep fit and healthy. I couldn't lift my arms, it would hurt so much and breathing would be very difficult in doing so too. Glad you're on the mend and don't rush back Into swimming, take it slow and steady. In the back of my head, I'm kinda scared it will be a reoccurring injury for life, hope not! Let me know if the Tiger balm and your other treatments worked for you. All the best, take care. 😊

How come the internal intercostal muscles make the thoracic cavity smaller? From what I have seen, originating at a rib and attaching to the rib below, should, like the external intercostal muscle, bring the lower rib closer to the upper one, raising the rib cage in aggregate. I think that the fiber direction as something to do with it, but I can't seem to visualize how this is the case.

Is it possible that an intercostal muscle strain could trigger anxiety and panic attacks if your sensitive to your breathing being obstructed?
@coleholden8241
@coleholden8241 2 жыл бұрын
I would think so, I'm not a doctor, but I have this injury right now and keep re-injuring it and I'll have a day where it is hard to breath and hurts to breath and I don't necessarily panic, but it does make it uncomfortable. When you're used to being able to breath normally and all of a sudden its harder too it's natural to freak out a bit regardless.
