Fuji's long-appreciated (and slightly long-in-the-tooth?) bright 12mm lens gets an the autofocus makeover, and this time it on the Fuji X system, where its older manual focus brother has always been popular)

The manual 12mm is one of the first primes i got for fuji after some kit lens and i also had it on canon M before switching. I don‘t think the lens needed autofocus so i‘m very happy with mine

It's a tough sell now that the Viltrox 13mm is out. Yes, the Viltrox is ~50$ more expensive, a bit bigger and slightly narrower, but seems to be much sharper and is one stop brighter!
@mattdebyl8806
@mattdebyl8806 2 жыл бұрын
Also double the weight and not as wide. One is roughly equivalent to an 18mm f/2.8 and the other a 20mm f/2. Those each have their place.
@Vinterloft
@Vinterloft 2 жыл бұрын
It's not as sharp in the middle and has more loca and colour fringing. But both are good options. What is usually the downer with Viltrox is that their firmware doesn't always allow changing focus speed and sensitivity on certain Fuji cameras in the menu, always essentially being set for max speed and sensitivity. Good for stills, terrible for video.

Great review, thanks! I own a copy of both the old and new version of this lens for my Fuji X-S10, and I'm not entirely sure that the optical formula is unchanged based on my own head-to-head comparisons of the two. That being said, I really hope you will be able to compare this lens to the Viltrox 13mm whenever Viltrox finds it appropriate to lift the embargo.

Chris, I've been looking at a montage sequence of some of the best camerawork from the film, The Cranes Are Flying. They are indelible and extraordinary. It makes you wonder how, with all that camera movement it was always in focus. (This is 1959!) Then you realize ir's shot with wide lenses, lit well enough indoors to probably be filmed at f8, outdoors no problem, but it's the film ratio that takes it over the top. 2.35/1. Or so. With that ratio, the edges are cropped, so less distortion is visible, and edge softness is eliminated. It's a win win deal, and I think this should be talked about as a subject for new video work. It is exactly the reason I'm buying the lens, and we haven't even mentioned the depth of field these wide lenses give, which is another big plus for using the manual focus lens.

Any reason why you haven’t mentioned that you need to buy a separate bit of kit (Lens Station for Fuji X - £62) to update Samyang lenses? Are you aware that there are no firmware updates available for x mount lenses? I watched all the reviews available for this lens and no one mentions these two facts. I would be delighted if you could prove me wrong. I’ve just purchased a lens only to find out that I have to spend another £62 for an extra bit of kit to update a lens for which there are no updates.

2:01 Isn't the lens front focusing a bit? I initially thought that the Pepsi logo didn't appear sharp because I was watching at 720p. Then I switched to 4k and also compared with the very next frame (where Christopher is holding the camera), and it does seem like the AF is not focusing accurately on the logo.

to check the true sharpness in the corners, you need to set the af point there because the distance of the lens from the center is different

@Vantrakter
@Vantrakter 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mrkrzyh It's called field curvature and it affects some lenses more than others. It's not a desirable feature in wide angle lenses if one values sharp corners since what's the use of a sharp corner if the center is soft (and who wants to stack shots to counter field curvature).

I will keep an eye on this lens. If Samyang can improve the glass/optics in a later version, I'm getting it. As it stands, it's a useful lens with autofocus and a contemporary look. It just needs to improve upon the manual version's optics a little bit.

I have the manual focus lens and don't use it that often, for an ultra wide-angle autofocus is less of an issue than it is with a portrait lens. So the main upgrade for most people would really be the improvement in reducing flares, correct? is it enough of an improvement to warrant an upgrade?

Can you please make a video and talk about the issue of the new samyang 12mm af f2 lens. Concerning the problem with the ibis when used in combination with the x-s10. Aps-c wide angle lenses generally will be bigger than their full frame counterparts, mainly because they need to be wider to achieve the same field of view, optically that's very hard to do well. At most normal and telephoto focal lengths though aps-c lenses are considerably smaller and lighter

In my churches we have raised a lot of money for Ukrainian refugees, and I have made a number of donations to charities I know who are helping. We are also praying for your country very much, and praying that Vladimir Putin would be stopped, and I have preached about the situation in church also. I also used my church's projector to light up the side of the building with a giant Ukrainian flag, which drew a lot of attention in our village here. Take care there - the whole world is behind you.
