There are a couple of people that always visit to downvote. Some might have some personal animus towards me, and there are a few people who know that I am a pastor and hate Christianity. @@DustinAbbottTWI I'm, an atheist and I must say that apart from the occasional appearance of the bible/other literature in a book case, a cross or whatever in shots here and there, you really don't make very much out of that aspect of your life here. Hello from Kyiv Ukraine. I bought this lens after watching your review and it is true that the images have a real beauty to them that is difficult to describe. I revisited this review because it came up again on my recommended list and watched it again with great pleasure. I noted your comment about a little water passing between the lens mount. I found a way to overcome this a while back by accident on another lens. I did a photo shoot with a model with long hair and while we travelled between locations she would use a wide rubber band to keep her hair tidy. When we arrived at a location she would give to me the rubber band and so not to loose this I placed it over my lens at the mount. In Ukraine we have sudden storms that can last a few minutes and one such came. We packed up and sat in the car. I was worried that the lens without a weather seal at the mount may have leaked a little water. I removed the rubber band and found that where the rubber band was sitting left a dry ring all round the lens mount. From that day I bought wide black rubber bands of different sizes just in case I bought other lenses without a weather proof gasket at the mount. You need to be sure there is some tightness of course but it is almost not seen when on the camera and it works for me. I leave the correct size band with the lens so it is always there. Hope that helps you.

Thanks for the review. I'm very pleased in general that 3rd party lens manufacturers are now coming up with compact lenses for full frame mirrorless. This Samyang seems great! I've recently switched to L-mount (Leica SL) from Sony. While Samyang doesn't support that mount (yet), there is the Sigma 45mm f/2.8 for both the E-mount and L-mount and it's a wonderfully useful lens. With today's high ISO performances, I'm not bothered at all with the 2.8 max aperture. I think you will like how small it is, how close it focuses and that it is weather sealed. The ideal everyday lens for me.

As of ever a very differentiated & accurate review. I have a collection of vintage lenses - particularly in the50-58mm range & never felt the need for paying a huge amount of money & weight for a modern lens just for corner to corner sharpness which anyway is not an issue if one wants subject isolation - then it is much more important the rendering at different f stops & the kinds of gradations one gets. Lens drawing was conceptualized on very different parameters combining both artistic & optical preciseness. During the slr film days the 50/1.8 was one of the cheapest lenses & nikon even made a very lightweight pancake style lens. MFD was around 45-50mm & I think that has not changed much. The zeiss planar if I am not mistaken is also around 45mm. The sonnar which was traditionally their more artistic design has an mfd at about - 0.9 so much more. The exceptions that I know of is the meyeroptik/pentacon at33mm&the later zeiss 2.8 version. The samyang lens - as you have so aptly illustrated combines the artistic&fine precision + gives a great balance of classic & modern in a small form factor thatreally suits the mirrorless. I too have fallen in love with this lens!!

How is the rendering and overall look of Samyang 45 1.8 as compared to Sony Zeiss 50 1.4? Which one do you personally prefer for personal and professional use? Both lenses have different strengths. I love the punch of the Zony 1.4/50, but the Samyang has beautifully unique rendering, is inexpensive, and so compact. I currently own them both, so I didn't really choose between them.

Just became interested in this lens and browsed through the comments, lots of folks wanting to know how it stacks against the Zeiss 55 and the Sony 50, but I’m curious how you think it compares to another low element design known for its rendering - the Loxia 50. You’ve captured some beautiful images with both lenses and the secondhand price of the Loxia has really come down; is the Samyang absolutely outclassed, or can it hang with a used Zeiss at half the price?
@DustinAbbottTWI3 жыл бұрын
Good question. The Zeiss has a much nicer build quality, but I'm not sure the Samyang gives up anything optically save perhaps color fidelity (Samyang glass tends to be a little warm)

Hi Dustin, is there huge differences compared samyang 45mm to sony 50mm f1.4 planar in terms of sharpness, focus accuracy and bokeh quality?
@DustinAbbottTWI5 жыл бұрын
I would not say huge differences, no. The Planar is sharper (particularly in the corners) and has nicer bokeh (and definitely higher microcontrast), but the AF is actually faster and quieter on the little Samyang. It's a lot of bang for the buck even it isn't as exceptional in every optical category.

@@pedromendonca2963 yes I have updated the firmware. If you google "philip reeve batis 40" you will find a review with the updated firmware. In short, with aperture larger than 2.8 and distance less than 65cm, the Eye AF still fails on this lens, even with the updated firmware. Might not be a problem for most people as all you have to do is to close it to 2.8 but then really you have to consider it a 2.8 lens, which isn't great.
