Well, that 6yrs warranty and knowing that Tamron partially owned by Sony just screams reliability to me, but $500 is $500 everywhere :D let us know which one you are keeping... I am waiting for the Tamron 70-180 f2.8 G2 upgrade (coming out soon) with vibration compensation to upgrade my G1 version. I am still a 16-35 (Sony GM) 24-70 (Sigma) and 70-180 (Tamron) combo guy :D

Great comparison! I'd love to see Sony (or someone) do a 35-150mm with a constant f/2.8, and save a bit on the size/weight. That's the main thing that's been making me pause on picking up either of these.

I was able to fit the Tamron 35-150mm in my hard case with minimal rearrangement from having the first generation Sony 24-70mm GM. It's a bit longer but not by much. Both are heavy bastards though and there's no way around that!

Constant 2.8 is very unlikely to save much weight. f/2.8 at 150mm is a 53mm aperture - The Tamron will do f/2.0 out to about 40mmm ff/2.2 to 60mm, f/2.8 thereafter. 40 f/2 is a 20mm aperture, 60mm f/2.2 is a 27mm aperture i.e. most of the size is driven by that 150mm f/2.8 end

It looked to me, that the Samyang wasn't parfocal, but was using its Autofocus Motors to compensate when zooming. But that's just from looking at your footage. It becomes blurry twice, then snaps back into focus.

I think you look at the wrong lenses for parfocal abilities. The parfocal feature is mostly on cinematographic zoom lenses that are very expensive. I don't think any sony, canon, or nikon have a parfocal zoom. Not possible with this price range. Why do people expect these lenses to have parfocal if the most expensive sony GM lenses don't have🤦🤦

In Australian dollar. I got the samyang for under $1500, cheapest tamron was about $2250, Australian stock didn't want to buy samthing on the Gray market because you won't get warranty. A $750 difference will help buy a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 g2. So far the samyang has been amazing.

Thanks for this, very informative! I know you are more focused on video but as a hybrid shooter it would have been useful to see an AF tracking performance comparison in photo mode. For me that would be the key determining aspect that would make me decide which one to get. I suspect the Tamron is better. Any thoughts on that?

Old reviews noted the af was crap, it wasn't parfocal at all, had worse coatings and worse sharpness. Maybe the update improved af and parfocal issues. Both lenses aren't parfocal. They use autofocus correction while zooming to mimic parfocal behavior.

Hi guys, i ve got the tamron. i really love it. I own 14 lenses now and most of them are not parafocal (or not with précision). My sony lenses are not parafocal either. I do only video. it s not disturbing me. My 35-150 tamron is 5 years warrenty and weight less (it s Still a heavy lens yet). Moreover i need the same color than my other lenses (28-75g2 and 70-180) so when i use the 3 in an interview it marches better. For these reason tamron is better for me. See you guys

Yooo . Samyang is actually Parfocal. I didnt know. That makes my decision making a lot harder. :( Tamron has so many advantages. Something to note that you did not cover in the video = Samyang at the widest end is NOT actually 35 mm. You can even see it in the video. The Tamron shows a Wider FOV at 35mm compared to Samyang. They do both have the same FOV at 150mm though. Samyang renders colours a little cooler than the Tamron, which looks slightly warmer straight out of the camera. This is due to the difference in coatings used for each lens. Tamron is better in Corner sharpness + Flaring aspects. (Samyang flares horribly in backlit shots whereas tamron has better contrast in similar situations)

They are the same lens from Tamron, plot twist, Tamron is actually owned by Sony since they acquired Minolta back in the day. Tamron license their designs to a lot of manufacturers like Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, Olympus, even Sigma which also license their lenses to other manufacturers, a lot of Sony G master lenses are actually designed by Tamron. If you look at the element count, its identical to Tamron, there nothing inherently wrong about this, its just how business work, no need to reinvent the wheel. There few cosmetic changes to the Samyang, when I say this its because Samyang manufacturers their version of this lens, the glass, the barrels, everything is made in a Samyang factory.

When zooming it would lose it pretty bad, and on the edges of the frames it had some a issue focusing on faces as well as some odd abberation, also when my A7sIII would lock focus on a face, it would not actually be in focus. Is this what the new Firmware update is for or did I get a dud? Also, possible that it was fighting my ND? Is that a thing?

@@DexterGoneWild Eh, I can't account for that as I've just ordered one, but I was referring to the broken mount bit, I just find it best practice to support any lens that's on that in-between to heavier side so if people experience the mount breaking I'm not sure how much that is on the mount quality itself and how much on people blindly trusting the mount with such a heavy weight
