When Tamron announced the 35-150mm f2-2.8 Lens for Sony E Mount Cameras I was intregioued. It wasn't until I took it out into the Real World that I realized this range is pure insanity. It has the ability to replace so many different lenses if needed. For me, it will be the ONE lens I take on vacation or on trips, if I don't want to take 3 or 4 lenses.

I already have one for Nikon F mount and am using it a lot and enjoying it. It's great for street photography. Some people critique it as it's not "wide enough" at the wide end, but it was designed to be a complement to the TAMRON 17-35 f2.8-4. Also, the SONY version is f2-2.8 while Nikon and Canon DSLR versions are f2.8-4.

I did exactly what you asked. I replaced almost all of my primes and zooms with this Tamron. I sold my old 70-200 GM, my 35 f1.8, my Sigma 85 f1.4 - all for this one Tamron lens and I did not regret it yet. I have a 14mm for Astro/Landscape and a 200-600 for sports and wildlife. With the Tamron in the kit it's my perfect holy trinity. Did some portrait shoots with the 35-150 as well and I didn't disappointed. 10/10 recommendation

Thank you for your review. I recently purchased this lens and in general I am very pleased with it. I noticed a big flaw when used for sports: AF-C tracking loses the subject when zoom racking. Basically you cannot follow a subject around and zoom rack at the same time for fast paced shooting, you will be missing most shots. Considering that you do a lot of reviews for this sort of camera and lens applications it would really help if you can observe lenses performance in this regard. It could also put pressure on manufacturers to address the issue. Until such issue is not addressed a suggest using this lens in action shooting as a semi-fixed prime: adjust your zoom prior to follow action around, change it only when you pause tracking.
@rekinxxxl

Damn, thats what I was wondering about. I used to have a lens that did that and it was annoying to use because I liked to change zoom mid tracking. Thanks for information. I think its due to the fact that the lens isn't parfocal so it throws the focus off.

I agree, I think people forget all of the downsides of shooting wide open at the lens's extreme. Very few lenses don't have issues there, whether it be sharpness, contrast, fringing etc. Plus you can set it to F2.8 and that is one less thing you need to think about as you zoom in and out.

Why Tamron designs it as 35-150 instead of 28-135? My opinion is - Tamron likely wants to build a whole new set of Big 3 lens with broader full range coverage . It's just my guess, Tamron may have a new lens ex. 16-35 or 14-35 with 82mm filter in the near future. Don't forget Tamron has launched the 150-500mm earlier. 35-150 and 150-500 are both with 82mm filter size, if Tamron can add a new lens like 16-35 with 82 mm then it will form a new Big 3 to cover from 16mm to 500mm with same 82mm filter. (We already know Sony 's16 -35GM is a lens with 82 mm filter, but it's expensive , so likely Tamron can design a similar cheaper and lighter product ) However, you can still buy a Sony 1635GM with Tamron 35-150 and 150-500 to form a personal big 3 set.

This is a very intriguing focal range for APS-C shooters who are looking for a lens similar to a 70-200 full frame lens. The 35-150 turns out to become a 52.5-225 in full frame speak. Very handy indeed as a 70-200 on a APS-C turns out to be very long indeed. Very cool and the price is fully inline with what's expected for fast zooms.

Honestly, if they did this for Canon, I would strongly consider this. I love my RF 28-70 f/2 and RF 70-200 2.8, but it can be really frustrating in the studio having them divided at 70mm. But the RF 24-105 was TERRIBLE on the R5 - crazy crazy soft, just not a good look to the images at all. To have one lens that covers this focal range and the fact that 2.8 (and 2.0) lenses are generally WAY way higher quality than 4.0 lenses, it could definitely be a compromise in the studio… IF there was a Canon option. 😑

Awesome review and a great lens worth investing in, in my opinion. One thing that wasn't considered or tried was the super 35mm mode on most Alpha cameras. I use mine all the time on my A7r iii and love it. Not only it gives me a smaller 20MP file, enough for almost anything but it effectively replaces 2 lenses at the push of a button (I have mine set to C3) In this case you get a 55-200 F2-2.8 which is even better range than a 70-200 f2.8. To me this lens is a game changer and Ian definitely buying one. I don't do sports so I don't need more zoom, but the subject separation at 200mm should be pretty awesome. I can't wait. This could replace my 24-70 F2.8 G Master... And my 55mm 1.8 zeiss Cheers

Hey there! I am just waiting now for my A7riii I can’t wait. I’m torn between this Tamron lens or the sigmas art 24-70 2.8, based on your experience, would the versatility and range from this Tamron kind of win the argument? Maybe add a 18-35 down the line and cover all bases

Great review as always, the only thing missing was a test at 150 to see how slow you can shoot. With no lens IS how well does the IBIS work at 150. I just got the new Sony 70-200 F2.8ii and at 200mm I have no problem shooting at 1/30.

Droolin' and saving up. I do lot of live music footage so looking in my archive in which situations I just _see_ that I lost a moment because I was switching lenses.. The cure is to decide on a lens for a period of time ( I usually get access to the whole show) and work from that, but this practical thing of 35-150 is such a keeper.

How do you feel about edge sharpness? Is it sharp edge to edge? Especially when doing large group or family photos. Are the people on ends sharp & not distorted?
@Rothardeo
@Rothardeo Жыл бұрын
hi, i'm not Jared Polin but i do own that lense :) I have mounted it on my a7 IV and its sharp from edg to edge. The only thing that isn't perfect with this lens, is the distortion and the vignetting. At 35mm it has a strong barrel distortion and havy vignetting, both get better the more you zoom in. But i wouldn't worry about that, you can correct those things but the value of not needing to switch between 24-70 and 70-200 or buy two Camaras is way bigger
@jenniferwhitetimelessmomen2015
@jenniferwhitetimelessmomen2015 Жыл бұрын
@@Rothardeo Thanks for the reply. The distortion sounds concerning for portrait photography. I'm needing a lens that works good for big group photos. I have one lens where I have to make sure there's a lot of extra space on the sides so the people on the ends aren't distorted since that's not something you can really fix on people so trying to find the best zoom for that. I'm used to running around with 2 camera's with different lenses for my fine art, but when it comes to family shoots, I like to find one lens that works well.

Though, conceptually amazing. 1200g is a bit heavy for an all-purpose lens. If they made it a 35-105ish lens and it weighed 700-800g, I'd definitely get it. Yeah, there's a 24-105 f4, but having that f2 at the wide is 2 extra stops of light and you get 1 extra stop of light at the tele-end. That would be a perfect lens.

The closest Sonys are the 24 to 105 f4 and the 70 to 200 f2.8. This lens is really tempting, but I have primes that are faster to fit that range. But the convenience of having this lens is extremely tempting.

My 35-150 2.8-4, i love it dearly. When i decide to take the slightly wider one, i miss it. Also, i shot an engagement shoot with it and it was just more convenient. Not to say i didn't switch to my 85mm 1.8 for some shots, but, am i sad i didn't get the 70-200? Sometimes, but, for my limited budget, there's no better choice, tbh.

I assign the Lens Fn button to "My Menu", where I have some little things saved that I couldn't map to Custom buttons on the camera. I love having one Fn button on the lens. I absolutely hate that Tamron put more than one on this because I'm ALWAYS bumping it and knocking my EVF off to menu. That said, this thing is a solid performer. I shoot a good deal of photos in high and low key in-studio. I usually use a 70-200, but find myself never exceeding 135mm, yes usually having to swap to a 24-70 for when I want that 50-70 range for some shots. This alleviates that change and never has to leave the camera for that application, especially since I'm usually shooting at 1/160 or 1/200 sec. Considering this a win. As much interest as I have in the 70-200 GM II lens, I don't think I'm going to buy it since this thing does the job well enough in its range...

I found this lens to have a major focussing flaw.. back focus when shooting moving objects in low light situations. I shoot dance competitions and when the dancers are near the audience the focus finds the audience faces and goes from the dancers. Using lock on tracking wide with sticky 0 and it still jumps on my A9 with v6 update. A firmware update needed for sure!

In my opinion you miss to test one really important thing.. Autofocus when you zoom! No one does that with zooms.. They just run in strange patterns at a fixed focal length ;) I bought the lens 4 weeks ago.. Had it for 4 days(2 of them were travel to and from Belgium).. But, first day.. I was walking around playing tourist with the lens, it worked awesome(loved the versatility).. Day 2 I took it to a bikerace.. And wow.. I have never been so disappointed.. The issue is, that when you change the focal length from 150mm to 135mm - which is really a small turn on the barrel, the camera totally looses focus(both A1 and 7III).. I tried everything, both playing around with setting 1(responsive) up to 5(lock-on). I tried changing from Eye-AF to non eye-AF.. And absolutely NO change.. Now my lens is at repair for the 3rd week.. And honestly I don't expect to get it back soon..
