The most underrated doctor ever. With Sylvester you couldn't quite know whether to trust him or not he played the doctor with a certain amount of darkness to the character. Always loved Sophie as Ace the toughest companion of all time a portrayal way ahead of its time especially after the annoying bonnie Langford who's scream could literally shatter a Dalek

Ace was one of the finest examples of how The Doctor can be both the best and worst things to happen to a Companion. On one hand, she was on a bad path and probably would have ended up dead or in jail, in some other self-destructive dead end. And the Doctor comes in and challenges her to be more than just a delinquent. She was his apprentice and the closet he got to parenting since leaving Susan behind. And she was also a prefect example of how the Doctor claims pacifism while fashioning his Companions into weapons. Seven was a ruthless chessmaster who didn't dirty his hands with direct violence while Ace? Yeah. Shoots one Dalek in the face with a rocket launcher, clubs another to death with a baseball bat, snipes Cybermen with gold coins, and carries homemade explosives. And while Seven clearly loves her, he also is psychologically brutal to her ("Curse of Fenrick")

His biggest problem is that his first season isn't really good. The last of a streak of ten bad seasons. So most people didn't watch anymore and the number of episodes was cut to 14 per season. So his whole tenure had as many episode as one season of Hartnell or Troughton. And when he really was about to save the show, it was cancelled.

the best moment in Silver Nemisis is when the spacecraft lands and the doctor ask Ace, "you didn't disobey me and bring any explosive?" "Of course not Professor , I am a good girl, I do as I am told". "Good, Go blow up that space ship".

I think the problem with McCoy's Doctor is that he's one of the very best portrayals of the character with, possibly, the worst stories. It's like the American movie, everybody was down on Paul McGann, then he did a five minute short and he was so good the only thing the American movie does now is let you feel bad he never got the chance to play the Doctor.

So I just stumbled across this video and it led me on a trail to discover the amazing world of WHO audio drama. Just checked back in to say thank you so much. McCoy was always my favourite doctor and I can't believe the huge body of audio work that he has made and is still making! For me this is a dream come true. Not only that but as you mentioned, his WHO has absolutely evolved and now had this dark and slightly fiendish edge. For me this is a realisation of a side to the character that was always there but never fully explored.

It is *so* cool to see this kind of passionate and knowledgeable output from someone born years after the ‘classic’ series ended. I enjoy your vids so much, including your references to the ‘classic’ Doctors you grew up with - something many of us also did when these eps were brand new! And, yes, most of us knew the 80s were being unkind to the show as they were rolling out around us. The horrifying reality of the never-really-officially-announced cancellation is something ‘New Who’ fans couldn’t possibly imagine (although if they keep talking the show down like they have over the last 12-24 months I suspect they might find out fairly soon!). Thank you, sincerely, for these vids. Keep ‘em coming :)

Very late to this, but I have a very nostalgic fondness for the VNAs. I became a Doctor Who fan in the tail end of the Wilderness Years, and for some ungodly reason my hometown library in Wisconsin had pretty much all of them. So instead of trying to track down obscure VHS tapes or catching random mid-story episodes on PBS, I was able to get an ongoing story that varied wildly in setting, sci fi flavor, and tone from book to book. It was like being invited in to every corner of science fiction imaginable, which is why I'm still rather fond of them even though I can admit that they missed more than they hit. Imagine my delight when the guy who wrote Damaged Goods was the new Doctor Who showrunner tho XD

I'd say 10 could give 7 a run for his money in the "darkest doctor" category, but it's definitely close
@rhinorodgernorrell28632 жыл бұрын
After seeing curse of Fenric, seven is definitely the darkest doctor. 10 never put his companions on the line like that.
@RopeDrink2 жыл бұрын
Let's see. 7th placing companions close to sexual predators, allowing Ace's fiancee to die, manipulating his future regenerations to do things they don't want, manipulating companions into leaving him so that he can take others for his galactic 4-D chess games against literal evil, destroyed (at least) two timelines because he doesn't like them, celebrating a near-total genocide by making a Dalek commit suicide (and then playing with its ashes), getting the majority of villains to kill each other so he doesn't have to, using his defunct titles for "F*CK WITH ME AT YOUR OWN PERIL" speeches, and that's just 1.8% into his run. That speech 10 delivered to Wilfred was pretty much aimed at the 7th Doctor. "I've taken lives, but I got worse, I got clever - manipulated people into taking their own". Even though the TV show was made with children in mind, 7th talks most of his villains to death rather than compromise. To compete, 10 would have needed to be TIMELORD VICTORIOUS for a long, long time. Honestly, it's hard to say which Doctor is the closest thing to competition. 10 is up there for sure, but when I think of 10, I don't think 'dark'. I think 'most human doctor' and 'occasionally very angry'.

Also, I've never been a fan of Sylvestor McCoy's acting, or his complete irrationality when the writers decide to make him the dark one instead of the funny one (listen to "Worlds Apart" for the best example of this). I see a lot of people saying that the nu-Doctor's having the darkest moments, but personally, I feel that none of all the other doctor's move even close to the dark moments the seventh has. Best example would be Remembrance of the Daleks, as he tricks Davros into actually killing his own race, planet, everything, and stands there and gloats. Or his entire Fenric storyline, using Ace as a chess-piece in his game against Fenric, he was a pure strategist, morally grey across the board.

I'm not fond of Paradise Towers that much, but I loved its idea/background. Blocks of flats have its own climate, challenges, mysteries, hierarchies, slang etc. The story tries to extrapolate such micro-societies. If we would remove the sci-fi part, then such society is surprisingly real. The part with different Kangs which are both fighting and supporting each other with people who just keep the division without questioning it or remembering origins? Brilliant and so real! I'm living in block of flats and I used to visit other places like that. I know the position of simple inhabitant, guest, visitor, even persona non grata and after years - somebody who no longer plays the role in place but who is the place - possibly eaten by it, together with the will of getting out of this hell. And by living and visiting I mean mostly outsides, staircases, corridors and cellars. Notice how these corridors and the flat of old ladies is shown - like the opposite sides with some funnel both connecting these worlds and dividing it. Such neighborhoods all look the same, but each block seems to be a different world, different set of rules, own mysteries, even own legends. And I feel somehow that such blocks are so cruel to people, one need to make some unnatural connection with that place or you'd hate your own home. The Paradise Towers by its extrapolation allowed me to see more about my place and other places like that. The grotesque, even psychedelic vision of reality.

i used to buy the new adventures books every month in the 90s but agree with you Transit (havent read that in over 25 years) around that time started getting to be hard work. there are some good ones. love and war, blood heat. conundrum, theatre of war. human nature, left handed hummingbird etc. what is missing from this review in particular. (it isnt any fault on your behalf) is the context of the episodes and the books. with davison and Colin Baker its easy to pigeon hole them into the time they were made, they look and feel like they years they were made in but not so with Mccoy. they are not representative of 1987- 89 at all. they are more like early 1990s. you can only know that by being there at the time. being into dr who in those years at school was pretty tough. wasnt teased (they wouldnt dare!!) but slightly oddball to everyone else. As where 5 years earlier chance of anyone else in your class reading a target book was quite high bordering on inevitable. one exception to that. Survival. i love it. it feels so exact in its portrayal of a sunday afternoon in 1989. mutlidimensional cats were par for the course for a late 80s sunday afternoon.. hahah. no i mean the atmosphere.. so quiet. boring, nowhere open, 4 tv channels, no internet, no mobile phones, just hang around the streets and fields. watching it takes you right back there. virgin books it was early 90s. you had those, dr who magazine, the vhs releases. and that was it. big finshed started 1999 and even then would only be able to find them if i went to london. with only the paul mxgann tv move in 1996 as new who. and every angle of those classic episodes being scructinised in the magazine the entire 90s. believe me those virgin books were the only thinng keeping it alive. i 100& agree that the tone of those vigin books is askew (certainly by todays standard) but what can you do. it was of the time. early 90s cyberpunk. better than nothing at all. .. up to a point. 1998 was pretty bad. nearly gave up on it myself then. the bbc books were around but both those and the virgin books before them were not that easy to find in shops. they were not popular. the memory of the mcgann movie fading and you think. well cant see where this is going. some of the books the themes are not nice at all ( amorality tale. 3rd pda. and cant remember what its called fox type aliens. 5th dr and peri pda. in particular those 2 i dont like, just nasty.) thank god for big finish. once they started you had that sense that something was going to happen.

7 is a great doctor but I struggle to deal with the 80s music in the back ground quite badly. I know it can’t be helped because that’s what was popular in the era, but watching stories like nemesis I just laughed at it when ace was fighting cybermen with an 80s jingle over the top. Ace was so cool doing it but it was made so cheesy by the theme over the top

I just laugh knowing that the bat ace used was the wrong bat and the eyestalk and that weren't meant to break off like that. It was hilarious.

I would think that Sophie Aldred despises Battlefield, as that was the serial she nearly died on, when the glass water tank she was "drowning in" cracked and they had to haul her out before she was cut to shreds.

I liked battle field as it was the last time we saw the brig, and for those of us who are classic who fans this was very very special the general story was a bit meh, but that was special!

I like Silver Nemesis, an iconic Cyberman moment is either David Banks EXCELLENT or the Slingshot scene where Ace tricks one Cyberman into killing another and kills the other one
@parrot998 Жыл бұрын
What about the part where the Doctor completely confuses the Cybermen with jazz? That is my favorite moment of that serial.

I've seen all of Sylvester McCoy's era, and find it underrated. There's actually a lot of good going on that outweighs the bad. My top 5: Time and the Rani, Remembrance of the Daleks, The Happiness Patrol, Ghost Light, The Curse of Fenric My worst 5: Paradise Towers, Delta and the Bannermen, Silver Nemesis, The Greatest Show in the Galaxy, Survival

How can you even make a list like this - one way or the other - and not mention The Greatest Show in the Galaxy!? :o !!! Like it or don't, but it's hard to say it's just run-of-the-mill Who...!

Ace is the best companion of all time. Season 24 is a extremely underrated fun season. I don’t get the JNT hate and I don’t see why fun stories get so much hate
@graphic-no_avail5344 жыл бұрын
Sylvester is likely the most unrated Doctor. He never really got to finish his time and was reduced to a throw away death at the beginning of a poorly received movie. (No hate for eight from me.)
@colinp22386 жыл бұрын
You didn't mention the obvious connection of the name Delta and the Bannermen to Echo and the Bunnymen, a band popular at the time. Time and the Rani was brilliant in parts, mostly to see Kate O'Mara imitating Bonnie Langford.
@SamyulDavis6 жыл бұрын
colin Paterson a new piece of information for me! And the Rani isn’t for me, though I get why people like the character
@colinp22386 жыл бұрын
@@SamyulDavis I always thought that the Rani could have made a comeback in new Who, regenerated of course as Kate O'Mara is dead now. It would have been better than Missy as a villain, there was already a female Time Lord in the Universe so why feminise the Master? She had appeared in an earlier Dr Who against number 2 I think.
